Darnel 1). Haynes, of E. E. Barnaby's mill, (lied very suddenly last Tlmrsdny at noon. He had complained some of not feeling well in the forenoon but did not quit work. After the whistle blow for noon he took his dinner pail to his accustomed place to eat. Upon taking the first mouthful ho fell over dead.
On the morning of Washington's birthday Hourly every other student seen oil the street iiad a huge club of some description in his hand. One class riggoil up a wagon with an imitation cofiin upon itaud paraded the streets. Near the dormitory a rival class was waiting. When they met the clubs were used with force and several received blows on the head that could lie heard for a square. No one seriously hurt.—(Jrer.ncastle Times.
Adoiphus Currie, tho Salvation Army leader, who created such a sensation here by his sentimental letter writing proclivities, in which pretty pert Katie Benson figured as the magnet, and who was expelled from the ranks for that offense, has been reinstated as captain and lias been assigned command of the corps at Rockford, 111.—Lafayette Journal.
The case of the State of Indiana vs. Oliver B. White, charged with the murder of Will Ellsworth, terminated in the circuit court Friday at 4:80 p. in., and was submitted to the jury. At 8:45 p. in. the jury filed into tneir places in the court room and the foreman presented ttie following verdict:
We, the jury, find the defendant guilty of murder in the second degree as charged in the indictment and assess his punishment at imprisonment iu the State prison during his life.

White received his sentence with indifference. He had sat through his trial with the same show of careless bravado and this is one of the resons assigned for the extent of the sentence. The verdict caused general surprise and but lew could be found who had imagined it would be such a long term.—Lafayette Journal.
News reached here this ween of the sad death of the three-year-old child of Geo. Snyder's, of Lafayette, who formerly lived a short distance west of town. The little girl, Nora was left in the house Thursday, while her mother went to the public well to get a bucket of water, and in some manner got several matches which it was playing with and when the mother returned the poor child was completely enveloped in flames. The mother raised an alarm aud soon the neighbors came to help rescue the child from what seemed certain death. When tho flames were extinguished an examination proved that its left limb and the stomach were were badly burned. The sufferings of the child which pen nor picture can describe only lasted a short time, as its spirit pissed to its maker about twenty hours after the burning took place. Interment took place in a Lafayette cemetery Friday. Mr. Snyder has many friends back here who extend their sympathy in this his trying ordeal.
A thirteen-year-old girl of Jonathan Ingersoll while playing at school Monday accidently swallowed a thorn, and it was at first thought it would result seriously. Dr. Hamilton was immediately summonsed aud in his usual successful manner removed the thorn and the child is now all right.
John A. son of Fred McClure, met with a rather severe accident on last Friday morning. He was playing with a shoe bottoner fastened in its right eye lid, when he jerked it tore the flesh, which made an ugly wound. Dr. Hamilton was called iu aud pronounced it a painful but not serious wound.—Waynetowu Hornet. "if
Dr. King, of New Ross, has been in Ladoga several times during the-past week transacting business with Justice Talbott. He is charged with complicity iu the Morrison-Rogers abortion case. The doctor alleges his innocence and has giveu bond.
Justice Talbott's court was this week adorned with one of the fair sex, Miss Biddie Hauitin. She was charged with using hot water in an unlawful manner on the person of Mrs. S. V. Cood. A like charge against Biddie's sister, Mrs. Julia Grissom will be disposed of next week. Biddie was fined S3 for her her little frolic.
Newt Martin sold his interest in the grain business to J. S. Shackleford. The firm will soon be Williams & Shackleford.'•, Mr. Martin iu the deal also traded his property on *Wash-i.iglou-st for some vacant lots.—Ladoga Lead-
Some fellow was here we believe oil Wednesday of this week to get John Musser to sign a petition to the Governor to pardon Charles Roberts, but our worthy ex-sheriff was proof against all such temptations as that. itv'V- ^1? Frank, son of Representative Goodwine, ol Warren, got on a Wabash freight at WestJ.elianou, one day last week, to go to his home at Round Grove, near Marshfield. In order to save a mile walk be jumped oil the train before it got to tho station,, and while it was moving. The tendons in both of his legs were broken loose from the heels, and Frank will bo a cripple for life.
Austin Swank, of Williamsport, who jumped from a moving Wabash train, north of this city about two weeks ago, is iu a critical condition and it is hardly possible for him to recover. Besides breaking a leg he received serious internal injuries.—Attica Ledger.
l/iidei the management of Chas. McClure and S. (nlkr.\ tlm citizens of WhitlocK were treated to some of the finest vocal music of modern times. Prof. C. E. Leslie, of Chicago, the noted singer and author of the hymn book, "the Cyclone,'' was with theni giving lessons for one week and on Saturday evening followed the finest concert ever given in this part of the county. The class consisted of 100 members, coming from New Richmond, Shawnee Mound, Mellott and Newton.
Saturday afternoon, Feb. 21, a school contest was held here, the object being to select from the various schools the best declaiiner who will compete in a county seat contest at Crawfordsville for a prize of £20. The best declamation was delivered by Mamie Webb, a bright girl 8 years of age.

New Market people are not likely to be taken in by any more "timber buyers" or any other swindlers, while they are as cautious with strangers as they were with one who stopped there last week. Tho gentleman had a letter of introduction from a man well known to the nstute New Marketites but they got the impression that he was a swindler and would have nothing to dcr with him.
Col, Crawford says the Midland is making a little more money than is needed to pay expenses, but suits are brought against the road at the rate of about "one a day" and as the road loses nearly all of them its profits cannot be large.
