Wo wonder why Jitn Johnston did not ask for cabinet position. Evidently this Parke county jfreak is getting bis hoad swelled badly. He now Wants to be commissioner of pensions. He would make a much better road supervisor.

The Clover Leaf railroad should import a new set of agents or get automatic talking machines for their places. They have one good mail in Montgomery county aud that is A1 Long, at Wingate the otheis are more matters of form.

There is quite a difference between Jackson township, Fountain county aud Jackson township, Tippecanoe county. The former is democratic by a handsome majority and the latter republican by a like vote. After all, what's in a name'?

Dudley,

ou

being interviewed one day last

week in •Washington City said ho was not seekI ig and would not accept any office under the incoming administration. For the honor and decency of the country it is hoped this is true, but the question is "How is lie to be compensated for the dirty work he did?"

Joshua Roseberry who was sent up some lour years ago to the northern penitentiary for crooked work was released last week. He was joined at Michigan City by lus daughter, and accompanied by her went to Chicago to spend a few days. He has returned to Lafayette, and has a good position offered him which lie will accept.

The firm of Clias. Kirkpatrick & Co.,' at New Richmond, are doing a land office business in buying ami shipping corn, as from 100 to 150 wagon loads art* received daily. It looks like business to lie around their elevator, as it also does at the W'liitlock elevator where they are doing a tremendous large business. The two firms sire wide awake and up to the times.

The residence of Johu C, Shephard, on Grant Avenue, a large two-story frame, caught fire on Saturday afternoon last, and before being extinguished damaged the property to the amount of probably §1,000. The house and contents were insured for $3,800. The fire drew out large numbers of people, many being from the country, alt intent 011 seeing tli water works display. The fire company did good work.

Mu. Moore, the gentlemanly swindler that beat the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. out of $500,000, during the past 15 yeais, at Indianapolis, while acting as the company's ajout in that city, is now residing in Canada, For some reason the company made no attempt to arrest him and appeared little worried over the immense sum he had embezzled from it and therefore the outside public can afford to treat the affair humorously if the company can.

Several of the gas belt couutyseats paid exor bitant prices for "write tips" of their towns in Frank Leslie's newspaper, and are now^vondering which place got the worst swindled by the fako. The way, it seems, to reach the pockets of the fellows 111 the gas belt is to tell them theirs is the greatest country, in proporportion to area, 011 the globe, or art some small manufacturing establishment of four or live hands' power. This lias heretofore been effective.

I11 the Carroll county court last week, the celebrated bank case was decided in favor of lYrriu bank of Lafayette. The later purchased some township orders that were payable at the Crawfordsvilie bank, and sent lliem there for collection when due. The Crawfordsvilie Iwnk paid them, but some weeks after discov' ered that the orders were forg"d. They de manded that the Perrin bank reimburse them which was refused. The court held that the Crawfor'sville bank could not recover. The trustee was a depositor in the band, and it was the supposition that tiny wore acquainted with bis signature. Judge Coffrotli appealed for 1 the Lafayette bank.

There were eight arrests through the St.aw Saturday, on.Federal indictments for violation of election laws—all republicans. Three reside ill Marshall county. Martin Heed, a wealthy fanner, was charged with swearing in an ill*' gal voter. Walter Price was accused of voting illegally and Amos Price, h:s father, forswearing him in. Walter has been out of the utate for eight years and upon returning avowed his purpose of voting for Harrison. Ho was warned by the democracy that it would be illegal, but he ventured the risk. John Bird, a wealthy fanner of Heury county, swore in his son-in-law, Herbert White, who had but recently returned from Texas, and this caused both to be indicted. George Anderson, of Decatur county, is charged with procuring Joseph Brickell to vote illegally, aud Anderson gave bond, like all the others, but Brickell was committed. James Rogers, of Decatur cqjnity, was arrested for illegal voting.
