There was preaching Sunday and Sunday evening. The sick at Martin Burroughs are slowly improving.
Dr. J. J. Shannon's health is some better at this writing. The teachers' held a very successful institute here Saturday.
Whooping cough, chicken pox and mumps are among our children. Elder J. C. Ashley occupied the pulpit at Providence last Sabbath.
Died last "Wednesday, the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Lafollette. Miss Emma Miller is highly spoken of as teacher at Harper's school house.
MIhb May Shannon bore away the palm at the spelling match Wednesday night. A number of our citizens manifested an educational spirit by attending the institute.
Tho«. Higgings, one of the pioneers of our neighborhood, was buried at Pisgah last Saturday.

James Roark, the old and well known deer hunter, recently succeeded in capturing a deer which has been running at large south of our place.
Your correspondent learns that Miss Louise Hiatt Brown, the lady orator of your city, has recently finished a lecture entitled "A Historical Sketch of the Beautiful," which she will give at a few points in the county, Let the literary people of Shannondale secure her services if possible, and be highly entertained.

Will Shaw was in Crawfordsville Saturday. Will Groves is visiting friends in Waveland.
Charley Owen was in Crawfordsville last Monday. Charley Easley did business in the county seat on Saturday.
George Snyder has gone to Lafayette to .work for the Wabash railway. Henry Brant is in Brownsvalley this week working in the toombstoue business.
John York has returned from Veedersbursr Where he has been working in a livery stab.
Edward Goff, of Elmdale, took the train from here last week for Danville to visit friends.

Louis F. Ott, the Hillsboro jeweler, has moved to Veedersburg where he will engage in business.
Ben Welch and wife, of GarGeld, and Warren Bratton and wife, of Frankfort, visited at Wesley last week.
A grand oyster supper was given by the Ladies Aid Society of the Hillsboro M. E. church Saturtfay night.
Tom Bowles and A. C. McKorkle took the train from hero Monday, for Indianapolis to attend the inauguration of Governor-elect Hovey.

Jesse Mendenliall and wife, who are well known all over the country, celebrated their golden wedding at their homo in Hillsboro Tuesday.
What has become of our white caps, even Capt. Billings, Jas Williamson, Howard Edwards and Dr. Hamilton don't know of the whereabouts of this supposed body.
There seems to be no end to the trouble in regard to the failure of Morris Herzog. Tho town loses good business man and the acts in settlement aro so badly mixed that it would take a good scholar to tell who is going to secure the stock. Charles Goldsmith is representing the firm who bought the stock while the room is rented by Mr. Herzog who wants possession immediately. Saturday night quite a number of citizens went in and wanted the stock surrendered to Mr. Herzog as it was reported that the transfer had been made. Goldsmith is in possession at this writing, but it is hard to tell who will bo next week.

Those that have been sick are getting better. Dr. J. Parker talks of locating at Whitlock.
A grand euchre party took place at A. T. Thompson's on Tuesday night. Mrs. Ed Hirst is visiting her sister, Mrs. Sam Moore, at Rob Roy at this writing.
The Journal correspondent here lacks the sand to reply to Hornet correspondent. It looks as though he has llies on him.
It is rumored that some of our republican friends here intend to attend the inauguration of President-elect Harrison on March 4th.
Dr. Frank Davidson and wife attended the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Mendenhall, at Hillsborough on last Thursday.
The Hornet correspondent asks why we cannot have a cooking club here. That is all bash. Give the ladies here the materials and they can cook all right without being members of a club. iH||
A declamation contest will take place at Academy Hall in Alirno on Saturday evening, March 115th 1889, at which time all the sdhools of Ripley township will be represented by a delegate from each school district in the township. At the township contest three prizes will bo awarded. Tho victor in the township contest will participate in the county contest, to be held in April 1889.
At Idaville the other night a cigar and tobacco dealer's store was entered by burglars, who carried off a good supply of cigars, pipes, etc.

Rev. Switzer lectured at the college cliapel Sunday afternoon, 0. A. Sillfe, the Trade Palace man. moved into W. W. Mills property or Grant avenue.
The Misses Walters, or Wesley, gave a social party to their many friends in that locality last Thursday
The plastering of the Y, M. C. A. building is progressing at a fair rate of speed. The building will not be completed probably until April.
Mr. Stephen Lee, sou or Col. John Lee, arrived home here last week from Oregon. Col. Lee and family will will return to Crawfordsville in May.
Mr. Weil, the butcher, will move his family from Lafayette to this city in a few days, and occupy tho Wasson property, corner of College and Washington streets.
The Ladoga normal has the best cot of student that it lias had for four years. This is one of the best schools in the state and we are glad to hear of it prosperity.
The county commissioners awarded the work of medical attendance upon tho poor of this township and at the poor asylum to Dr. Rankin for $400 per annum.
Mrs. E. M. Henkle and daughter Miss Dora left for Brazil Saturday afternoon where Ihey they will reside in the future, Mr. Henkle being employed on the Daily Times.
Dr. J. N. Taylor started for Florida on Wednesday. A part of his business is to inspect the quarantine station at Tampa Bay, Pensacola and New Orleans, in pursuance of a systematic effort on the of the State Board of Health.
Six or ceven pretty young ladies with grip sacks in hand have been in the city for several days past in the interest of Dr. Price's Baking Powder Company. They have about completed their work and go from here to Anderson.
Three or four families have removed from here to Marion, Grant county, within the past few weeks, considering that city the best of any iu the natural gas belt In the way of improvements, increase of population ami future prospects.
A company has been organized at New Richmond to bore for natural gas, the stock having been subscribed. They think they are in the belt We hope they are, but no place west of Hainmilton couuty that we know of yet discovered this.

A. M. Stern, the dudish looking individual, who eloped with Miss Minnie Cavenaugh from this city, near three weeks ago, was arrested Columbus, Ohio, this week and jailed. The young lady, we learn, has been brought back to this city by her father.
Edith Gwim, a child belonging to the Orphans home, was taken to the north part of the county three years ago, to be raised by a family up there. They appear to have 'raised"

A new gravul road is to be constructed dining the coming summer anil Tall between New Richmond and Moharry's grove, a distance of something over six miles. A petition asking for the construction of the road will be presented at the neJtt session of the Commissioners.
Springer, of Illinois, has introduced in Congress a resolution proposing an amendment to the Constitution. It provides for the flection of the President and Vice-President by a direct vote of the people, and Tor Hie term of six years. It makes the President ineligible for a secoud lerin, and extends the term of members of Congress to three years, lhe term to expire December 31st. It also provides that each session of Congress shall begin the first Wednesday of January in each year.
The bright young man who does the pencil work for the Brazil Daily Times, seems to have imbibed th» idea that (ireencastle is the first station beyond Slioel—and inasmuch as it is the first stopping place this side of Brazil we do not know but that he is correct about the matter. Tho reason that he entertains such au idea is explained when it is known that he came originally from Crawfordsville, where educational advantages are somewhat defective aud antiquated. If the young man will grease his boots, 1ut on a clean shirt and come over some day we will take pains to show linn more things than he ever saw. —ureencastle Times.
A New Postmaster at. Ku*sellvlUo. Will H. Long has resigned his position as postmaster at Russellville and Uriah Brown, a republican, has been appoiuted. Mr. Long, thinking it would not be policy to resign and have some democrat appointed for only a few months, after Mr. Brown had circulated a petition aud had it signed by fif.y of the most prominent republicans. Brown has been a citizen of that place for 25 years and his past record preves him to be au honorable, upright man.
A man by the name of Bright, employed by 03car Freeze, job printer, of Danville, has disappeared with $100 belonging to his employer.
Thursday morninir Herman Frederick's saloon at Vincenues was burned, tho loss on stock and fixtures being $200. The damage to the building amounted to about $300 fully insured.
