ED. CRAWFORD^VII,I,B REVIEW: In obedience to the request of your splendid newsgatherer at my old town of Darlington, I will write you a short letter.
He writes such newsy letters that he thinks any one can do the same, but I beg him to remember that California is so completely written up that there
!s
Now I belong to neither class and am capable of viewing things more nearly as they a e. California is just like other places iu many respects. It has its hitter as well as lis sweet, but bitter cold and abject poverty are no part of It.
Its even and salubrious climate one thing that eveu its detractors will giant for it. But they say one cannot live upon climate, wh'cli iB true but surely one can ex'st upon it fully as long as he could upon a Minuesota bliswtrd. When it comes to making a livelihood it is here as in every other coiinUy. "By the sweat of thy brow shalt thou earn thy biead," only I do believe that it Ukes less sweat here than any place I ever veiled.
There aie several reasons for this. If a man is a farmer the times of planting and harvesting his crops are hnih in his favor and much more so is the method of performing both of these icessary woi ks.
He is now busy and has been for a month past planting his crop which is either wheat or barley.
He is sitting behind from four to eight horse." on a gang plow, from daylight, until dark, and turns over from five to ten acres a day and will plow two to six hundred acres this winter. When he goes to planting be hitches four or six horses to a large farm wagon, loads on a load of seed grain and a broad-cast seed sower with a gearing that he attaches to the hind wheel of his wagon, He lias a man to drive and one to feed the machine. Away he goes, as fast as the team can travel, and by night he has 60 to 100 acres sown. Then follows a man driving 10 to 16 horses attached to a common joint harrowrof many joints, froin SO to feet
By ill is' means very few men Can plant thousands of acres, which is no uncommon crop in many patts of California.
The harvesting is done on the same grand scale aud generally takes about two months, May and June. Thus iu five months the farmer has made his crop aud has seven months to devo.e to climate, camping out, or idlenes0, just as he prefei s.

REVIEW
COIIKIIKILMKK'StR
That was on
scarcely room left to stick
a pin in her, Much is written that is true and more that is fake. Two clpssei viewing it from different standpoints do most of the writing. One class has come here and regained lost health or made wealth and they give the exaggerated story of the beauties of climate and fae'lities for money making while the other class lias failed to do either and their stories are as much of an exaggeration in the Qpposite.
that does not do this siate
justice. It was iu regard to mechanics, especially builders in either wood, brick or stone.
There is no place in the world where mechanics can do so well. They can work more days iu the year and for better wages than iu any state in the Union. The trouble with most of the mechanics that come to this country is that they do not know their trades, but think that almost any thiug is good enough for a new country.
This is a great mistake, there is no place in which the art of architecture is so high as in California, especially in wooden buildings, and it requires highly skilled workmen to follow out those elaborate designs.
My advice to the average mechanic is, if you have a family and health, just stay where you are.
But, if a man is competent to compete with tbe best of workmen, he can come and never fear the result.
Houses are going up as if by magic and still the cry is for more. Our state is rapidly filling up with eastern people and they must all have new houses fo live in.
Our immigrants are not of the class that setbled tho western slates. Instead of coming in a wagon with their worldly goods tied on behind, they come in Pullman palace cars with uibir pocket-books stuffed with greenbacks and bank drafts. They are wealthy people from the frozen North, that come prepared to pay $2,000 to €2,000 an aero for climate and have the laud thrown iu. §S|£
These are tbe men, together "with our hundreds of millionaires, that make money plenty and wages high for the skilled workman aud faithful laborer. I presume there is no state in the Union that has as much wealth per capita and I know there is no place on earth that they spend it freer.
There is one class of labor that need have no fear of comiug to California, and that is domestic help. They have lighter labor and beltor pay than in any place I have ever been. House girls get from fifteen to forty dollars per month with board and washing and they do not have to do any washing either.
Considerable "booming" is going on in San Jose but of a safe kiud. They lay off town lots, to be sure, but they build upon them, make good streets, walks, etc.
The gas fever has broken out and a company bas been formed to bore for natural gas. What succes4 they will have remains yet to be a«certaine I.
All gas experts say surface indications are very good. If gas should be found lie"e in good supply it would be the making of Sail Jose. We have all the facilities for a manufacturing place except cheap fuel.
Our winter so far has been very line, with more than the usual rainfall, that up to date is a little over seven inches. Last season, to this date, we had about two inches.
A heavy rainfall is what all Caliromians pray for. AVe never get too much. The night of the 26th wo had what they call a wind storm, but it was not strong enough to uproot a single tree or blow over an old chicken house.
Only 20 miles from here It blew great guns (and little ones too).

Rheumatism.
Tite Swift Speci'ic., Atlanta, Ga.: Gentlemen—Three years ago I was exposed to the weather, because of my connection with an engineer, corps. My constitution, though strong finally gave way, and in a short time a terrible case of rheumatism had full possession of me. My limbs began to swell the knee joints were twice the normal siz9, aud parfectly stiff my aukles were so diseased that it was impossable for me to walk. I had lost all control of myself, and when I moved at all it was with the aid of crutches. A greater part of of my life was spent in bed, and almost constantly I was under direct charge of a physician—the best that I could find, They gave me all the relief possible, but there was no improvement in my condition. One day while lying upon my back I read your advertisement, and in desperation decided to try your medicine. I gave it a thorough trial, and in less than three mouths I had left my bed, dropped my crutches and participated in a foot race. S S S, did the work for me, and to it I owe my present good health. Use this as you see fit. ^y^Youis,

Let me tell a little story, about a little man That, lived upon this hemisphere, where life is but span. lie had a little, griping pain, jnst forward of bis spine, Which gave him many troubles at tho time he wished to dine. It doubled him, it twisted him and drew him out of shape
And caused him many musings on tho subject of black crape. ne Knit his his brows and bent him as if in earnest prayer, lie gnashed his teeth in agony, and then began to swear. The earnest on his features grew convincing in its glare Ilis hands were clenched,!hls eyes were eot, in that peculiar stare Which betokens direst agony, and whiepers, "Give it up Or seize a hasty remedy, with eagerness to sup." All hope had wellnigh fled him, amidst liis howling ills, When his eye fellon a little bos ]lic read "Small's

What followed does not matter enough the man was cur-d And health i.nd strength and beauty nnto him was assured.
