The school of music orchestra will visit Crawfordsville, probably on January 11, to give their first awny from home concerts.— Greencastle Times.
Evan Newman, of this city, tired of life, undertook to put an end to his existence, Tuesday evening, by swallowing a big dose of carbolic acid. He was but recently married, and being alnlost blind it is understood that tho reason of his rash act was his inability to support his wife. Medical aid was promptly summoned and he is now out of danger.—Lebauon Patriot.
As usual a number of hoodlums attended the entertainment at the Presbyterian church Monday evening and conducted themselves scandalously. N.i one olfered to arrest the offenders, or put a stop to their conduct instead, Rev. Engstroni is censured fur using such strong language In talking to ilietn. Preachers, you know, are expected to endure everything, and never lose control of their temper.—Wavelaud Independent.
A brutal murder occurred in Sullivan a few evenings ago. One Carl While, a young man 23 years of age, met Arthur Hale, a boy of Hi, r.ini the two shook hands, the former pinching the latter's hand until Hale said he would hit White. The latter then hit Hale with a bottle and while Hale was reaching for the bottle to throw it back White pulled a car coupling pin out of Ins pocket and struck Hale ou side of head crushing

Tho case of George McDaniels against tlie Chicago A Indiana Coal railway was tried here in the circuit court last week for damages for personal injuries received on the 21st day of September, 1887, at Attica. McDaniels was assisting in unloading a car load of lumber, and while at work the train men were doing some switching and when the cars came to-* gether McDaniels was knocked off and the care ran over him, mashing his arm and leg in a frightful manner, which will render him a cripple for life. The jury was out about six hours and returned a verdict of $11,000 damages.—Covington Friend.
On last Friday Robert Huey made a heartsickening discovery near Lodi, seven miles southwest of Kingman in this county. In passing through a strip of woods Huey discovered the frame-work of a man's body. It presented a horrible sight, all the flesh being eaten off of the bones, aud all the clothing, except a cap, even to the boots, being torn into shreds or literally devoured by hogs which were pasturing in the woods. Of course the body could not be identified, but the cap, which was overlooked by the voracious hogs may lead to identification.—Attica Ledger.
Harry Newton, son of tlie widow Newton, who resides near Romney, Saturday morning, presented a check for *185, drawn in favor of "John Jones," to Paying Teller B. I. Johnson of the Fowler National Bunk. The check pur. porting to be signed by G, W. House, a wellknown farmer, and a depositor at the bank. Cashier Brockenbrough aud Teller Jolinstou with practiced eyes detected that the siguature was not genuine, ami shortly after young Newton had signed the name of "John Jones" on tlie back of the check, police, who had been sent for, arrived and made the arrest.—Lafajette Times.
On Christmas morning several young men gathered at the liume of Mrs Rector, south of this city, with the expectation of going hunting. John Brewer was one of the number, and while he was handling a target gun it accidentally went off. Wui. Rector was in range aud the ball passed through the fleshy part of his left arm, entering just below the elbow and being taken out about two inches above the wrist. A large artery was cut and the young man was considerably weakened from the loss of blood. The wound is a serious one and the result of the shot can not be definitely determined.—Attica Ledger.

A hoise belonging to a man known as "Texas," living in Covington,! atl«r obtaining all the usefulness from the horse, and (lie animal was unfit for further service, he turned the poor brute looso in the river bottoms to die, or survive as best it might. The horse died one day last week, and Marshal Ensminger learning of it informed us lie intended to arrest "Texas." We trust he has done so, as such treattnent to a dumb brute, after it has spent its life for its master to bo turned out to die from starvation is shameful, and should meet with condemnation from our people, and tho severest peualty for cruelty to nnimnlsdished out to him.—
Sponce's Paper.
One evening lait. week Mrs. Wahlen, living in Shawnee township, lert her two little chil. dren, aged two and four years, in tho house playing while she went out to milk. In a short time she heard one of the children screaming, and running into the house found the youngest covered with flames. Sho at once dashed the bucket of milk on the child, which put out tho fire, but too late to save the little sufforer, who died that night. The little one was burned in a most horrible manner over its entire body and face, one of its ears being burned off. How it caught fire is not known. It was buried on the second anniversary of its birth.—
We were yesterday greatly pained to learn of the accidental shooting of Elmer, little son ot Hosea Cronkite, of Steuben township, which occurred last Monday, the ball entering the right side of tho abdomen and passing through to the left, lodging near Iho surface, which was afterwards extracted. LeRoy, the eldest son, and Elmer, aged about K-Jyears, were rabbit hunting about three quarters of a mile from home when the sad accident took place. Neither of tlie boys could toll liow it happened, but that it was purely accidental there cannot be tho least doubt. After lingering in great pain until 3 o'clock last Tuesday—Christinas day— Elmer died. The weapon doing the work was a revolver. The sad affair is one which falls with terrible force upon the afflicted father aud mother.—Williamsport Republican.

Let me tell a little story, about a little man That livod upon this hemisphere, where life is bui a span. lie had littlo, griping pain, just forward of hit"
Spine,
Which gave him many troubles at tae time he wished to dine. It doubled him, i«. twisted him and drew him out of shape And cauecd him many musings on tlie subject of black crape. lie knit his his brows and bent him as if in earnest prayer, lie gnashed his teeth in agony, and then began to swear. The earnest on his features grew convincing in its glare His hands were clenched, his eyes were sot, in that peculiar stare W hieh betokens direst agony, and whirpers, "Give it up Or seize a hasty remedy, with eagerness to sup." All hope had wellnigh lied him, amidst his howling ills, When his eye felion a little box Jhe read "Small's

What lollowod does not matter enough tho man was cured And health and strength and hjauty nnto him was assured. The moral ol this story is plain to human eyes When you've a little griping pain go thou and do likewise. D22tf
