A it A imc a i. paper wants tQ know "what, iii Mr. Grant doing?" An exchange adds.: "It is easily answered. That editor ought to know that Mr. Grant has become tired of his diversions at Long Branch, and has gone to the deserted white house to take a nap. Let him sleep in peace.
When a President surrounds political conventions with soldiers in order to exclude from them those citizen.1 who are opposed to his renomination. the liberties of the. people are in danger'.'
The above extract is from the Xew Vork Win, italics and nil. We need only say ^hat Mr. rant, through his oflice holders, surrounded the late Republican convention in Louisiana, with soldiers, in order to exclude those citizens who are opposed to his re'nomination. If honest men believe''that the liberties of the people nro in danger,"
in consequence of this corrupt conduct, they will have an opportunity to provide a remedy next year. Mr. Grant will force his nomination upon the radical national convention, and the jjeo^le will have an
opportunity toconsign him to political obUvion. T!jey will be very apt to emhr.ice (,he opportunity.

who look upon the wine when it is
red, and looking upon the foreign seals and brands upon corks and bottles, -'know what they are drinking," will have their faith in brands and seals somewhat shakeu by finding that a ^reccnt. lot of imported liquors seiied on a New York steamer by the custom officers at Boston, for non-pay-ment of duties, was saved from confiscation by the owners showing that -the liquors, tho bottles, and tho brands and seals, were all made at a Now York establishment, which does nothing but manufacture imported liquors and tiic accompanying,, marks, .of authenticity.
IT is a historical fact that men nr».tarried into rebellion they seldom weJk voliintarially into it. They go hcl^lesijy upon a tide. Kven Luther,.during, fifteen years of his ministry and ten years of hin protesting, had no more u.tention of getting out of the Church oj Iconic th.m had Pope Leo hitituelf. lie had no more idea in 1 1S of becoming the founder of a new Church than wheu, in 1 "iO"i, he was a porter and beggar in the Augustinion convent, or when, in 1 •"10. lie crawled upon his knees along the sacred Jpavenmnt of Rome. John Wesley had no intention at any moment of his life of becoming a Methodist, and he died in the full and joyous communion of the Church of Kngland. The revolutionary patriots had no intention of cutting adrift till war actually hrok« out and they found that must "hang together or hang separately." Kven as late as 17To the pugnacious John Adams denounced a hint at independence a* "a child's dream." We never know what we will do till the hour conies.
Patent' Riiyht Swindlers.
On last Saturday, a couple of confidence men, calling themselves llenry H. Harris and Win. B. Sayer. were arrested in our city, on the charge of having obtained the notes of various citizens of the county, by falsejand fraudulent representations. From what we can gather, we are convinced that they are a couple of scoundrels, for whom cither of onrjown penitentiaries are entirely too luxurious, and that bread and water with solitary confinement, and an occasional scourging with a cat-o-nine-tals for an indefinate number of years, would be scarcely adequate punishment.
Their modus opcrattdi is ilie most skillful and calculated to deceive, even the most careful, of any with which we have yet been made acquainted. They approach a farmer upon his farm, with the inodel of what is called "Drakes' Patent Ilay Fork and Ilay Carrier," and propose to mako him Drakes' agent for tho sale of this machine in certain Townships. They propose that in consideration of a person being appointed such agent that he shall pay to Drake the profits upon a certain number of machines—any number being agreed upon. They further propose that the agent shall execute to Drake his note for the amount of •aid profits, due six months from dat«, and contract that if the agent does so Drake shall extend the time of payment of this note for one year—if the agent does not sell eneugh of machines during the six months to paj the note or, if the agent should prefer it, when the note falls due, they agree if enough machine* have not
been sold for the profits on them to pay the note, if the agent will divide the profits with Drake, to return the agent his note and cancel the Agency. They fix the price at which the machines must be sold at fifty dollar*, the manufacturing price being only twenty dollars. All of this is set out in a carefully written and printed contract. They thns induce the person whom they approach to believe that if they take an agency and execute the note*, that they cannot possibly suffer any loss save that of timeThat if the profits do not pay the note, it will be kept till tlue, by Drake, and upoa division of the profits be returned to. Us

maker. Then the agent, believing till to le fair, safe and honorable, executes his note to Drake for the agreed amount, "which I note is made payable at pocue bank. This
is where the fraud comes in. But few persons in thecountry ku.0--* the binding effect of bank paper. Tb.ey. rely oa the written contract and fceliove that it will protect them, while la. fact, where a note is made payable 13. batik, and is sold to an innocent purchaser, when he sues upon it, tha writ-
I Van contract is of no effect, and although the agent had not sold a single machine, he is compelled ti pay eTery cent of the note.
Having obtained those notes, these
scoundrcls make great haste to sell thein, and in every instance where ihey have had time, notwithstanding the obliga
tions of the contract?, they have disposed of them, thus defrauding the makers out of the full amount wi:h interest. As regards the sale of the machines, they require the agouti to sell them at such an exhorbitant piico, tliiit no one will purchase them, so that there is

remedy whatever left the
victims When arrested last Saturday^ they :ar:i'.V into town with a iarge amount of booty, thus dishonestly obtained, and before the arrest was macV? they had no opportunity of disposing of the notes obtained from the citizens of this county.
The persona whom they have thus defrauded in, this county, obtaining their notes as above described, are. as far as we can learn, as follows: .John Stump, note for ?000,00 John 11, Porter, ... 000,00 William Buser, 480,00
Of course, 110 perron reading or hearing
of this, will have anything to do with these notes, and we sincerely trust that justice will be meted out to these rascals who thus deliberately plan to rob our people. We have heard of a large number, who have
been victimized in the same way, by the same persons, in Putnam, Boone and Hendricks counties. Their notes ranging from
$300, to $900, in each instance. Let this be a warning to others.
The New Railroad to be Built.
The managers of the Crawfordsville k. Wabash Railway mean business. Yesterday morning Prof J. L. Campbell, ahiefi engineer of the road, made his appearance at the junction in the southeast part of the city, with a corps ®f assistants, andr began
the preliminary survey in tho direction of Yountsville. This work will occupy all of next week. Our opinion of the effect of the new enterprise remains unchanged. It
is the corner siouc of the new prosperity, l'ush it on.
Havo You any Old Cigar Boxes'
The Chicago Republican says there has been a recent judicial decision touching the tax upon cigars, making it a penalty of !£."0 not to destroy the box after the cigars.) shall have been taken therefrom. This applies not only to the regular dealer in Ci»article, but to the consumer, and the vidual who has a dozen empty cigar-W*es '•kicking around" his house, or in tLs possession of his children, had better put his foot in them, or institute a savings bank In order to meet the penalty, sinre- tdio law does not excuse ignoranoe.
(Jreat "Sham" Battle in Russia.
A sham battle on an untmitally extensive scale is to take pla?e in Hussia this summer, for the purpiee at' giving the staff of
ficers of tho iifiit-y an opportunity of making thei^yfilves practically acquainted with the. vigils- of military operations. The of these movements will represent an attack on St. Petersburg. The attacking army will march toward the capital from Dunaburg, in the direction of l'ieskoy, nnil be supported by a detaclnmnt from Riga. The defenders will operate on Ostroy and be supported from Dorpat. The latter will also take measures for retaining possession of the Baltic provinces, and lay down a line of fortifications at Revel and Wessenbur. Kacli of the armies will consist 'jf about four divisions of infantry and eij^ht or ten regiments of cavalry, together \rith supports of nrtilh ry and Cossacks. The staffs of both sides are to send into t'ae war department detailed reports of the. operations, and to render a strict ncco jnt of-tho expenditures of stores and pro^ jiotis. Topographical sketches of all t.he grounds passed over arc to be made wi great care, and in all c«ses the movements of the troops and the proceedings of the officers will be a precise imitation., of the minuti of actual service.
