A Trial of Strength*

The recNsnt contest in Ohio for the Republican nomination for Governor was a tri^l qf strength between the San Domingo party tuii the officc holder* on one side, and the independent press on the other. •••„. 1 President Grant tad the San* 'Domingo speculators were resolved that

Ben Wade Bhouid be the candidate for Governor. ^he independent press Were for Geo. Noyes, aud when the Tovention met, Ben Wade was so powerless in it that he had to withdraw without a ballot, leaving Noys to be nominated by acclamation «nnt, and the office holders, and the San Domingo jobbers were nowhere. The independent press had cleared them all out of the field.

Joat so*it will be next year, when the Rep obi lean candida.to for the Presidency comes to be nominated. Grant hopes to be tbc man, and all the office holders and the San Domingo ^speculators encourage him but the independent press puts In its veto.

Grant will rotire—if he is wise he will not wait for a ballot—to obscurity, ^and. some mjmfittd be Prosident will be nominated in his.stead.

A ST. LOUIS paper has stated, and a number of other journals kavo. taken up and are discussing with great earnestness, the proposition to abolish the Electoral colleges and clioosc our Presidents and Vice Presidents directly by popular vote. There is nothing new in the discussion, it comes up regularly about this time every year, just to fill up the dull political period between planting and harvesting, as it were, aud nothing ever conies of it. The difficulty is that under the present system the many small States have ^mieh more power, and the few great

States much less, than they would enjoy on a direct vote. ..New England, for example, has twelve Senators, and consequently twelve electors at large, although her aggregate population is not as large as that of Pennsylvania s. or New York, and but a third larger than that of Illinois or Ohio, each of which have only two Senatorial clect- !. ors. Again, there are fourteen States, whoso entire enumeration fulls short ^v*otf thatj ofS New York,* uod eleven .which count in all but a few thousand inhabitants more than Illinois alone. ."Thus Now York eocs a population less '.than her own east twenty-six. more *$Votes in the Electoral collego, and III fc'Jnoi* is twenty short of the electoral 'strength wielJed by an equal number "r.or,people elsewhere. It^would be ab-

J^aurd to expect the small States to sur- $ render the advantage they thus hold and as it can not be taken from them -''--without their consent, there is obvioitflly not much profit to be acquired in discussing the subject.

FATAL RULROAD ACCIDENT.

and Sf vera I Other* ftijui cd

A serious accident occurred on the Louisville, New Albany & Ohicago Railway yesterday mornings which resulted io the death of one person, the injury of several others, and the 0001* pleto wreck of the engine, tender and baggage car. About two miles north of the Battle Ground there is a heavy ravine which, until recently, has been crossed by trestle-work, but which had been filled in with earth, with a culvert at the bottom, to carry off what water might accumulate during heavy raina. During the heavy storm night ^before last, thia culvert became chock cd up, so that the water on the right hand or cast side accumulated to the depth of fifteen or twenty feet, and which finally washed out the track. .The passenger train, which arrived

9

hero at 1 o'clock, passed the spot in safety, as also did a freight train a short time afterward going north, the men on neither of which trains noticed anything wrong. The train from New Albany, for Chicago, which passed here at 2:10 A. M., in charge of conductor John Bently, engineer William tGrimaon, and fireman Edward Whit. mer, was, however, not so fortunate, as the sequal will show. Tho train, consisting of engine and tender, baggage and one passenger car, was running at the rate of twenty-five miles an hour, and all on board unconscious of the danger. Suddenly, as the fa'al culvert was reached, there was a deafening crash, and then all was still, save the hissing of escaping steam, the roaring of the torrent, and the groans and about* of the trainmen and passengers.

As the engine passed the treacherous spot the track gave way, and it was precipitated into the gulf beneath. The tender was turned completely bottom side up, on the top of the «boiler the baggage car ran on top of the tender, turned twice over, and landed right side up iu the water, twenty feet off to the right, while the passenger car ran on to the wreck, retaining its upright position, with no other damago than the smashing of »the forward platform. The engineer, 1 Mr.

GriiMon, by a frantic effort forced himself from the wreck by jumping through the window of the cab into the water, leaving his boots firmly imbedded in the debris of the wreck.

Had ia taproot canto off, his death would have been certain. His orios -lis the water brought an uninjured passenger to his assistance, but who also fall into the water, and both were rescued by the brakeman. Strange

The assassins escaped. The community is greatly excited. T6n thousand dollars has been raised to prosecute the guilty parties when caught. Detectives are busy ferreting them out. They threw three jugs of benziuc into the rooms occupied by the family. They then threw in several large torpedoes loaded with buckshot, nails, screws, and similar missels. The torpedoes exploding set fire to the benzine, and aroused the family, when the assailants commenccd firing with revolvers into the doors and windows.

Their conversation, while laboring under these spells, is in an unknown tongue. They catch and eat all the flies they can get hold of, until it produces nausea when they both vomit at they same time. What one does the other does, -at the same time. They seem to be luaovcd by one controlling power.

An Anecdote or Pror. Morse When the great inventor was in Washington, employing all his energies to obtain an appropriation from the government to erect a line from Baltimore to Washington-, he had his instruments at each end of the Capi tel to demonstrate to the members of Congress the feasibility of tlie plan. H.e says "I talked to them, explained the working of the instrument hour after hour. I gained many adherents still I saw that many were yet incredulous, and many scouted at at the idea as preposterous, and pronounced my instrument as the toy of a crack-brained enthusiast. It was toward the close of the session, and there were still about two or three hundred bills yet to be passed before they came to mine. It was late at night, and finally I. gave up in absolute despair, tod left the Capitol buildigg. with sad he^rt. 1 was bankrupt, having expended all that I had on my discovery. I walked down the Capitol steps with exactly fifty cents, all I had in the world, and a more disconsolate individual it would have been hard to find. After a wakeful night, I arose iu the morning to find my bill passed, and a new ,erea in the history of science commenced."

What Constitutes a State.

"Governor Hoffman in his^addres! at the laying of the corner stone of the new Capitol of New York thus defined what constitutes a State

The glory and" strength of a State consists not merely in its public edifices, its public works, its monuments of public and private splendor and munificence. Its sources of strength are to be found in purity and vigor of character, the self-control of the men and women who constitute the State, its true glory in tho general diffusion of virtue, peace and comfort among the homes of its people. That is the most perfect State in which the benefits of constantly added wealth reach furtherest down- the scale of society, and in which self-government, the government of each man over himself renders other government- all but unnecessary. To this wholesome and substantial growth the efforts of every one of us can contribute with the help of God.

Over One Hundred Guests at a Wedding Feast Mysteriously Poisoned. On Thursday Mr. Grant, the ticket agent of the Dcs Moines Valley Rail road, was married at l'ort Dodge to a young lady named Miss York. Numerous invitations were extended to the leading citizens and their families to be present at the feast. In the evening tho house of Mrs. York, the bride's mother, was thrown open, and about 9 o'clock no less than 200 hun dred ladies and gentlemen sat down to partake of the elegant repast which had been prepared. The affair proceeded pleasantly till shortly after 10 o'clock, when some of the visitors were takeu ill, quite suddenly, and had to be removed. Others were similarly affected in rapid succession, and present ly the horrible suspicion flashed across the minds of all that they had been poisoned. The bride anfl groom becomc ill, and were taken to their room. Every physician in the city summoned, but as many of these were at the feast, they were also ill, and unable to even properly attend to themselves. The victims were removed to their homes, and groans and moaning were heard in almost every household. The pain and sickness are almost beyond description. Up to Saturday at noon 147 persons had undergone agonies worse almost than death, and a number of others were becoming ill,. Tt is in very bad taste to hurl the epithet "traitor" at a dead man. However indiscreet Mr. Vallandigham may have been, he was honest in all political opinions, and brave enough frankly to avow them. He held that the Federal Government had no right to coerce a State, and that is precisely what Mr. Greeley once held.
