A Kite Strawberry Patch.

A writer in the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer, tells the following strawberry story. At this season of the year it makes excellent reuding. Fie sayy "he has seen scores of miles of country a Jpgrpo of latitude north of Fort Totten, which was utmost a coutinuHUH growth, of stfawberrios, growing, in uiany of thu riolier spaces, not on ,.horizontal vines, but on bushes, many oi' them three and four feet high, on whivli the clusters of this delicious fruit attain a else rarely reached by

4 A Strange Fish. On Saturday last the fishermen at tho Soquel beaoh, while hauling their seine, caught a very strange fish. It was about four or five feet long, with bead somewhat resembling an alligator. The mouth would open very wido, and a sort of hissing noise proceeded from it. It had two firey like eyes of a green-yellowish color, with two horns of a bard, bony substance, protruding from each side of the head. The body was slim and long, and it bad four web feet, the legs being short and stout. Just below the two hind feet tho body separated into two tails, and on the end of each was two bunches of tassels, somewhat resembling tea-weed, or coarse hair. It was very spry and lively, and the men were at first afraid to touch it, bnt finally one of the men struck it over the head with an oar and killed it.—Santa Crule (Gal.) Times.

OrroL ZEK, the great Aus

trian physician, who died a few weeks ago ia Vienna, was a very eccentric man. He often went out among the poor of Vienna, and perscribed for them in a disguised band. One day he was at the bedside of a poor wid. ow who was dangerously ill. AH at onoe a messenger from Hotburg entered the room and requested Oppolzer to repair immediately-to the imperial palace, the empress having been taken sick. Oppolier inquired what was tho matter with her. On receiving the rcply that she had a very bad headache, he quietly said "Her majesty can wait until to-morrow, but the widow here »^eannot." paid the United States

last year $180,000,000 for cotton. By manufacturing this into fabrics, she probably realised a profit equal to the original cost. The dfstance 'this material has to be carried to reach her markets, and the return, if the fabrics are sent here for sale, is, of itself, a very large per cent, of protection to our home manufacturers. The extent of this can be inferred by computing what it costs to' transport a pound of the raw material from the interior of America to Europe, and to return it in its altered form. Of course the amount of this import represents the surplus of production unconsumed here. The difference in cost paid is Fnfficient alone to give our cotton faceories every advantage over the foreign, and ought to enable thctn to sup ply Got only the United States, bat the world at large, a* cheaper rates than any other country. We have the crop at our doors, machinery in every respect equal, skilled labor, broad oceaDs and all the charges of commcrce on our side. Yet, with all these advantages of location, the cotton factories are as ravenous for protection" as if they had none of these advantages without calling on legislation for it.

idea of the terrible work at Par is may be received from the following paragraph taken from a recent dispatch: "Horror is heaped upon horror. The streets of Paris run with blood. The torn and mangled bodies of the sons of Fraucc, slain by their own countrymen, are strewn in every direction but still tbo order, "en avant" is heard, as platoon after platoon is mowed down, others fill their places and push on to what is to be victory, but one bought at a terrible sacrifice."
