4 MM Browned While Being Baptized. A few days since, Dr. A. P. Vow noil, of Sandy Hill, Kentucky, after a brief couruhip, waa married to Miss Mary J. Wilson. Shortly after his marriage, Dr. Pownell united with the °hrietioo Church, and Sunday last was appointed as the day of his baptism, he baviog requested his pastor, the Rev. J. B. Hough, to perform the rite. At the appointed hour a large number of persons had assembled on the banks ot' Crooked Creek, the place chosen for the immoriion After sing ing and praying, the Rev. Mr. Hough entered the water, leading the Doctor. They were obliged to proceed some distance from the shore in order to reach a sufficient depth but suddenly both were seen to go down. They toon arose to the surface, and the minister regained the bank, but the doctor, being unable to swim, was awept, by the current, under flood gate only a short distance below. Every exertion waa made to save him, but io vain. The body waa aoon after founi, and brought ashore, amid the most heart rending screams from his young wife and friends.—Matteawan Revitw.
A War In Europe Predicted.
Tbe war between Germany and France ia barely ended and we already meet with predictions of a struggle of as great if not greater magnitude. These predictions appear in such an earneat and solemn shape, that one i9 involuntarily reminded of the prophecies of those who after 1813 declared tho necessity of struggle for life and death between the German and Latin racea as unavoidable. Men of the same sincerity and of a deep knowledge of the condition of every state in Europe, now predict a war between Germany and Russia, and they foreshadow the downfall of the Mu» eovite idea of Panelavisin and Ru«sifioation of Europe with the same con fidence as they predicted the impending extinction of the pretensions of France to rule and civilise the world according to her plans or whims.
Tbe idea that Russia carries the dealing of the world that it ia her providential mission to rejuxinate to Europe first, by uniting all the Slavo nian races into the government, and afterwards by humilating the European ocident and overflowing it with millions of Museovitea—this idea 00 deniablj underlies every public demonstration in Russia.
The Russians believe that the orthodox religious character of their people eombined with the numeric preponderance of the Russian race are bonnd to secure to Ru&sia the predominance in Europe. The present Cx*r, unwilling to leod his authority to the old Moaeovite party, to make thia the predominant idea throughout the empire, waa nevertheless carried away by tbe immensity of tbe movement and when he had to decide his policy io regard to Poland, he scted as if it were be who stood at the head of the Raesian pmpagand. Poland is crush* ed oat of existence, and only a few daya ago the Emperor congratulatedtne government of the Polish provin eea on hia aarcese in the complete Rasaifieatioa of that unhappy king* dom.
The old Bfaaeovite party regarda the tiwalment ^f JMaad by tha cxar Akttgir xi aa hdiaatioa that the •ifaar yiwvlMtt aa*
afterward being conqunred by Ra*si» will b« treated io fbe Mine mi oner. The provinces bordering on the Baltic with their large tpriokling of Ger man*, frill come nest to tarn to be Ramified. At thia rer? moment a hidden war between the Ko*tiin officers and the wealthy families is waued all along the line from Tornea, Revel, Rizs and Wifna to Warsaw and Kive. Streams of blood will How before this is achieved but that it will be doue is the conviction of almost every farseeing statesman io Europe.
THE
Brltifh Government seems to
attach a great deal of importance to the possession of the little Inland of San
JUM,
which off the Oregon
coast. It is only twelve miles long by six broad. It is on the Southeast eud ot the large Inland of Vancouv or, which belongs to great Britain, [n relation to it the Earl of Lauderdale. io the IIoo*e of Lords, said "If San Juan were given up to the United States, and fortified by that power, the effect would be much the same in that part of the world as it wculd be nearer home if the Isle of Wight were given up to the Freach and fortified by them." The prominence niven to the question shows that Great Britain has no idea of withdrawing from the Americau Continent, and intends to hold on like prim death to all of her strongholders here. Under the Oregon Treaty, which gave to the Uuited States all south of the line of iorty-nine degrees—save Vancouver'* Island, which mostly lies north of it—San Juan belongs clearly to us. The Government, uuder the Washington Treaty, has referred the que&lion ot its owuership to the arbi* tratioD of the Emperor of Germany, a potentate whose son h*9 mirried the daughter of the British Sovereign, and who may therefore be supposed to have strong sympathies with her. In private life such arbitrator, so nearly allied to one of the ^parties, would never l.ave been selected with the i-out-ent of the udvers interest. There is little doubt that Fish and Grant have been overreached in this matter.
The Column In tbe Place Ycndomc. Tbe column in the Place Vendome, which has been destroyed lately by Vandal hordes is Paris, was thus constructed "The interior shaft was of stone, and the exterior of brooze covered with baFrelief*, protraying the maiked events of the war. Twelve hundred cannon taken io battle furnished the bronie a»d the completion of the elabo rate ornamentation of this part of the structure occupied nearly fire years. It was fiuished in 1810. The design was* mainly copied from the 'Pillar of Trajan.' the French column, however, being 135 feet in height, (surmounted by a colossal statue of the first Napoleon. The diameter of the monument was sufficient to permit the introduc tion of a stairway of 180 steps, by which vipitorj reached the summit The whole structure cost 8364.UOO From the summit of the monument the best view of Paris could be obtain, ed the magnificent church of the Madelaio displaying its handsome columns to the north west, the Obelisk of Luxor in the Place de la Concorde being visible at the south west, and far away westward, over the beautiful. Champa Ely sees, prominent over all other cbjects, rose the celebrated Arc de Triomphe de I'Etoilo. The dome of the Hotel des lovalides, the Chamber of Deputies, the Pantheon, and a score of other ohjecta of exceeding interest were within range of the magnificeot monument.

The Russians will not be brought to terms after a detest of their first armies, nor will the Germans e\er attempt to capture either of the two capitals of the Russian empire. Oo the coutrary. peace will not be made until the Occiient of Europe purchases its independence by preat concussions made to Russia in the Ori ent. If Bismarck lives to Fee this crowning catastrophe, the interests of Great Britaio in the Orient will be sacrificed to Russia without reserva tion. Every German speaking tribe in Europe will then be uuited to Germany Euulapd and Frince will be crippled, and the center of gravity ol the Russian empire probably moved to Constantinople.
