ROUSE'S big dramatic troupe will be with us in a few days. They are now in Danville, Illinois.
No un, nothing but a slight sprinkling, has fallen for the last six weeks. This is the dryest spring known for years.
Tnu fruit, with the exception of the strawberries, has not yet. been seriously injured by the frost. There will he plenty of apples and cherries.
IT will be seen by their advertisement in o-days paper, that Messrs. Campbell & Harter will buy all the wool offered tlieni— and pay the highest market price.
TIIK Journal of this week bores its readers with "The Beautiful Snow." We suggest that in the next issue it publish the touching lines—"ltoll on, Silv** Moon."'
CBHTAIN persons who have been engaged in tearing down hand-bills, should recollect that the^r are liable to be arrested and fined.
TIIK nnti-btnd candidates for councilmen, are Samuel W. Ausiin, in the 3d ward Joseph Gaskill, in-thi 2d ward and Samuel Smith, in the 1st. ward. These men are certain to be electod.
TIIK tax-payers of the city are beginning to inquire fur the whereabouts of the interest that has beeu accuring for the last six years from the city school fund. Can honest John Darter tell
TIIK Journal growls at our business men for refusing to iucur tho expense of having the streets watered. Why not issue city bonds for the accomplishment of this lautlablc objent ?s :They c.in be negotiated at ten per cent.
GKN. M. D. MANSOM returned home from -w Washington on last Monday night. The General looks well, and from all accounts deported himself, like a good and faithful servant of the people, a thing that has not fcajipencd in this district for many years.
IK
nine cases out of ten, when you find a man blowing and ranting about education, and the necessity of running the city into a big debt, you can safely set him down as .'* a chap who has an ax to grind at the publie expense. Tax-payers cannot watch theae Peter Funks to closely.
Moa BONDS TO A ISSUED.—We are reliably informed that it is seriously, contem plated by the Ring to issue another large batch of city bonds, to purchase grounds for a city cemetery, notwithstanding the city has tbrco large and commodious burial grounds.
WK uuderstand that the office furniture of the eity council, sold gome time sinee to satisfy a claim held by General Lew Wallace, has not yet been redeemed. With our city finance in suoh poor condition, who is willing, knowing this fact, to purchase the proposed issue of f80,000 worth of bonds They could only be sold at a ruinous shave.
COSVEXIKXT and commodious ward school houses can be built for $3,000 apiece. With 99,000 the city can build three buildings, which, with tho present seminary, will afford ample accommodation, for the next ten yeara. With the money now on hand, including the interest which has been accumulating for the lasljii years, we will have a respectable sum to commence with.
OSK
of the favorite dodges of the Ring, when they find a man opposed to their swindling scheme of plugging the city kead-over-heels in debt, is to accuse him of being opposed to education. Sueh trieks ,should be treated with contempt by sensible men. No man, we believe, in the city .}* opposed to building good, commodious ward school houses, but we know there arc kvndreds who will vote against the iniquitioas scheme to contracting an enormous ..jtebt to bnild a palatial school honse.
Til grocery eatabliahmtnt of Johnson & Baak, on Green street, is unquestionable one of the-best boases to deal with in the •ity. Here one can nd every article in the grocery and provision line, and at figures, we will venture to say, (speaking from our ovn personal experience), lower than can be had inanylown ui the West. Polite and attentive clerks always in attendance te wait ftaenttoatrs.
Ma. J. W. Rooxaa, late Rector of the Episcopal Church, Memphis, Tenn., will lecture in Eltiroth Hall on next Monday night Subject: "England returning to Catholicity or, "Why im I a Catholic." Mr. Rogers is a gentleman of eminent talent and ability, and in the lecture field has won high distinction and honor. We trust that our citirens will not loose this rareopr port unity presented to hear him, and more especially do we hope to see our clergy present.
