MCCLUKB & FRT have now the finest stock of goods ip the city. The ladies should not fail to call and examine their beautiful prints.
As will bo seen by their advertisement, Messrs. Campbell & llarter announce the arrival of choice styles of Spring suitings for gentlemen.
THE coming Theatre which opens next Monday evening at Eltxroth Hall, is the same troupe that supported John V. Owens for 100 nights this season in the principal cities of the United States.
MB. HORACE ENSMIKOER, one of the Coun. cilmen who voted to plunge the city into an enormous debt on last Monday, has moved outside of tho city limits, thus escaping the threatened heavy taxation.
IT is reported that our school will soon bo closed and not opened again until some time next winter, it having been determined to tear down the old building 'nnd erect a new and costly edifice.
3* TUE big French plate glass for the show window of Campbell ft Ilarter's new store room on the corner of Washington and Maiu streets was safely put in by Mr. E. Griffin, the builder of their magnificent block.
-TME debate last Thursday evening at the Christian Church, between Fisher Doherty and J. M. Hyatt, was quite an interesting affair. The subject chosen was, "Ought Spiritualism to be Substituted for Christianity Foust, of the REVIEW, took a shorthand report of Mr. Hyatt's speech.
...» WEBSTER Sox have removed their boot and shoo establishment to Urbana, Illinois. The oitizens of Urbana will find thess gentlemen to be men of enterprise—live men whoso departure from our business circlcs we deeply regret.
PERSOKAL.— We. wore made glad by smile—several smiles, in fact—from tho genial face of John A. Gilbert, ex-D. of this office, at present with J. M. Chisum, of Lafayette. John informed us that he came down to "play with the boys," and to "give you baok your heart," &c. Go in, John "faint heart never won fair lady."
VICK'S annual, illustrated, seed catalogue and floral guide for 1871, has been received. It is printed on tinted paper, contains nearly one hundred pages, two beautiful colored flower plates, with illustrations on every page in workmanship it is a perfect gem. Vick is the pioneer seedsman, and for honesty and plainness of dealing he is unsurpassed. He sends seeds and bulbs to any part of the United States, free of postage. By sending to him, persons obtain superior seed for the same money that they pay for an inferior varioty from less scrupulous merchants, and all know the vexations that arise from poor seed, loss of la* bor, loss of money, and 1 (as of time. Avoid all these, by sending directly to James Vick, Rochester, New York.
WE are happy to announce to our readers that our city will be visited by a first-class dramatic troupe next week—that of Carhart and Co. We can assure our readers that this is BO catch-penny affair, but in •very respect is what the managers claim for it. On the first evening will be presented Rip Van Winkle, with Mr. J. H. O'Keane as "Rip." In this character Mr. O'Keane has but very few equals. Miss Cordelia Cappell takes the character of Gretchen—a character which is on* of her specialties. By reference to our advertising columns it will he seen that this is the same company that opened the Terr* Haute Opera House.

THE quiet calm, and placid temper of our people have been somewhat ruffled during the week, by the action of our city council in voting tho issue of city bonds to the amount of thirty thousand dollars,to run five, ten, and fifteen years, with ten per cent, interest the money to be applied in building a public school house on the grounds occupied by the old seminary building. The fact that our people are already overburdened with heavy taxes, and that they have never been consulted in regard to so important a matter, is regarded by many as a high-handed measure upon the part of the council. We think that the tax-payers shou'd have an opportunity to be heard, as they are the ones who will have to meet the semi-annual payments of the interest, which at the usurious rate of ten per cent., will amount to three thonsand dollars per year, and in fifteen years to the enormous sum of forty-five thousand dollars, which, added to the principal, will make the proposed new school house cost seventy-five thousand dollars. It strikes us tint this would be paying rather de.ir for the whistle.
Before any further action be had, or (he bonds issued, let the Council advise with the citizens. 8urely there can be no harm in learning the popular will, particularly in a matter of such magnitude. We believe that substantial public school houses can be built in the several wards at a much Iras price than the costly edifice proposed, and that without borrowing or issuing bonds at a high rate of interest.
