It was, I believe, in October, 1790, and not long before his death, that I heard John Wesley in the great, round meeting house at Colchester. Fie •tood in a wide pulpit, and on each tide stood a minister, and the two held him up, having their hands under his armpits. His feeble voice was hardly audible. But his reverend couoteuanee, especially his long, white locks formed a picture never to be forgotten.. There was a vast crowd of lovers and admirers. If was, fur the most part, pantomime, but the pantomime went to the heart. Of the kind, I never saw anything comparable to it io after life."—P. 19. This incident was never forgotten by Robinson. He often related it at his own table, with the addition, that so greatly was Wesley reverenced, that the people stood in double line to see him pass through the streets on his way to the chapel. Ia a letter written at another time, and not knowing the man I should almoBt have ridiculcd his figure. Far from it now. I look upon him with a respect bordering on enthusiasm. After the people had sung one verse of a hymn, he rose and said, "It gives me a great pleasure to find that you have not lost your singing. Neither men nor women—you have not forgot a single nolo. And I hope that by the assistance of the same God, who enables you to sing well, you may do all other things wcll. A universal 'Amen' followed. At the end of every head or division of his discourse, he finished by a kind of prayer, a momentary wish, as it were, not consistipg of more than three or four words, which were always followed by a universal buzz. His discourse was short, the text I could not hear. After the last prayer ho rose up and addressed the people upon liberality of sentiment, and spoke much against refusing to join with any congregation on account of difference of opinion. He said, 'If they do but tear God, work righteousness, and keep His commandments, we have nothing to object to."

two provinces of Alsace and hcTraine, and, in addition, to bear the entire ex
pense of the contest, she becomes, incomparably, the great military State of the Continent.. Indeed, so vast
will be her military power that it will seriously threaten the destruction of
the balance of power among Europeau
nations, to maintain which has always been the object of its cabinets and of
its armies. Within four years she will have beaten down and crushed to the earth the great military monarchies of
France aud Austria, who alone, save Russia, have any chance of disputing with her the Continental supremacy. Within that length of time she will
virtually have conquered and aunexed so many adjoining States and
kingdoms as to bring up her population from less than twenty-five to fortyone millions of people. All this im
mense population, under her iron military rule, which forces every man, without exception, into the army, is virtually a camp, which is in motion at once at. a word from Berlin. If she has France at her feet, she will be a consternation among the smaller and minor powers. How long will it take the anaconda, which has, since 18(54, swallowed up half of Denmark and a large portion of Germany, with parts of France to complete its repast by the addition of Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, the rest of Denmark and Austrian Germany A gigantic State must have armies that will seriously tnenanee the independence of all Europe. There will come a coalition against her by the remaining powers, England, Russia and Austria. The jealousy which prevailed against France under the Frst Napoleon must be transferred to Prussia. Already in her success, we see indications of it. The rest of Europe can hardly look on with in indigerence aud see so gigantic a nation as France—so indispensibie an element in the balance of power combination—crushed and destroyed. If they do, then let Russia look out for herself, for the armies which have man-lied on Vienna aud Paris will next go to St. Petersburg and virtually make the Baltic Sea a Prus sian lake. Of all the European nations, Prussia is the only one which, on that Continent, has made large ter ritorial aggrandizements since 1815. She is the menacing, restless matrtial power. Two or three year a^o the
meuse expense of maintaining the siandiug armies of Europe, proposed to the different countries a plan of a general disarmament. All assented to it save Prussia. With the sword that country has done all. ft is hard ly two centuries since it w.u the petty Duchy of Bradenberg. By its share in the partition of Poland—the great est crime of the Eighteenth century, by its conquests in Germany and its dispoilintr of Denmark, and by the military system of Frederick the Great, it has built up that fabric of power which is now so dangeroa? to all the adjoin iog State?. As we have said, if successful in this contest. Prussia will soon be involved in a general war. in which she will have to face the eoatitiou of the (,'ont.iuent. backed up the military and uavai power of Gre-U Hritaiu. In that event this war wili be but the commencement of a long and \iesnerate struggle, boundless iu its cost, and indefiniie in its termination.

end, unless there is an intercession of the other great powers of Europe, is highly improbable. The remark of the Empero^ that it would be a long and bloody war, is apparently verified by the present outlook. If the Prussians have any hopb that the march of their armies will cause a revolution in Paris, that will forward their views and lead to peace, they wil be mistaken. It is not likely that in any event a revolution will occur and if there is, it will only be for the purpose of wielding the forces of the Empire with the greater ability against the foreign invader. Torrents of blood are bound to flow, and with alternate fortune, before the waves of war will be stilled.

In the whole history of the Gov ernment, no such flagrant disregard of the public interests and wilful con tempt for public opinion have ever been exhibited by any former Administration. The conduct of the President and his Cabinet in this respect js a shame and a scandal.
The President has been abseut from Washington about one-fourth of the time since his inauguration. He ha? drawn from the Treasury some 610,000 in salary for which 110 pretense of ser vice has ever been rendered. That is to say, be has taken this much pay while running about the country in search of pleasure and amusements, or looking after his personal interests
The President receives 825,000 a year for salary alone, but the appropriations for the White House make it nearly all clear profit. Secretaries, clcrks, messengers, steward, servants, gardeners, laborers, lights, fuel, stationary, green house, kitchen, garden. stables, and numerous other items are paid for out of the pockets of thi people. These appropriations, which were wholly unknown a few years ago have grown up gradually, until they now sum up tens of thousands an nually."
