Our neighbor of the Journal has

suddenly bt cn seized with a spasm of

reform. When a Radical is attacked iu this way, the disease assumes a roost violent shape, and like the Irih-

mtiu's pig there is a big cry. while but

littlo wool is clipped. A Radical

economist is curiosity, lie agonizes over dollar while millions and per

haps billions which slip into his

pockets are taken as of no account,

For example —in the last two issncs of

the Journal whole columns arc tal-en

up with the astounding discovery that

the Auditor of the County io his year

tures, has an item which shows that

for "wood, light, dc.,'' there was ex I

The Journal says, in order that they

might show how every cent wascxpond-

man to the Auditor's office to take a

copy of nil the bills which had been

presented and allowed by the Hoard of

County Commissioners, during the fis

cal year ending June i?0th. and in sub-

stance say that the Auditor refused

the gentlemen permission so to do.

This is simply untrue. The gentleman

sent, demanded

books, papers, receipts. fcc.. nit/

fused to have done: but told him he could

eximine them in the office as much as

he pleased, or he would furnish him

with certified copies of all documents

ho wished, by payment of what the law

allowed for such work. This is tho

simple truth in this matter.

Hut the Journal can't get over the

(.)„], This supplied the

Clerk's, Recorder's, Treasurer's and

Auditor's offices, and also the couDty

jail cells and the court house. Think

of it. ye taxpayers! For all these

purposes for a whole year less than

ooe hundred cords of wood were used.

This included five terms of Court,

public meetings without number, the

poor man's Sunday school, with Mr.

and Mrs. Harter at its bead—pious,

pood people—who certainly would not

burn county wood unless they thought

they bad a rijrht so to c^o. The other

half of the 8792 was used for lipht, &c.

The "«{•:." question troubles our neigh

bor. lie wants information. He

must have it. The i'tfre." includes

$40 paid to that sterling Republican,

Ike Smith, for cleansing the public iustitution in the rear of the court house—used without regard to party,

I and which no other person could do so

well. Five dollars of it was paid to

another Republican—a former sher

iff—for mking said institution in

scarch of La Follel. supposed to be

iaierrfit therein. Some of it went for

hardware for the count}* jail some of

it for white-washing county offices,

court house and traveling around jail

and court house. Some for chairs for

court house, book cases for clerk's of

fice, new stoves for court house and

jail. In fact this $792. in addition to

all the wood and light, furnished all

the necessary expenses of the class re

ferred to above for all the offices and

officers in the county. We ask the

tax payers if this docs not prove that

instead of extravagance, exconomy

from the people by the Radical thieves

and plunderers now in power, by try

injr to show that the Democratic offi

cinls of this county, have been r.r/rav-

The last and greatest discovery made,

is, that at. the September Term, 1SG0.

of the Circuit Court of this county.

School IIou«e. Saturday. Sidener presented ati itemized M.

bill, which was passed upon as correct,

7 iind allowed by Judge Cowan—whose I loyalty and economy no one questions

i—amounting in all to the sum of I

S h! 10. The Journal says that one-

half of this expenditure was unneces

sary and charges it all up to Demo

cratic extravagance. We do not know

whether it was unnecessary or not—as

the Sheriff's business is something we

know nothing about, but comparing

the bill as presented by Mi'. Sidencr

with the bill presented just one year

before for tlie same term by a Radical

Sheriff, John N. MeConncl—we are

bound to say that extravagance is

again on the side of loyalty, and econ

omy on the Democratic banner. Hut

we will not waste words—but give

both bills- one by Mr. Sidener, Demo

crat, and the other by Mr. MeConncl,

Republican—and let the tax payers

read and judge for themselves.

ple to tharige froin economical Demo

ones, because the Radical State Con-

ises it to the people. Radical Plat

forms are the synonyms of fraud and

and force. Tax payers want promises

backed by actions—not promises,

which like pic crusts are made to be

broken.

"Where Docs the Money Go?"

The above is a question of great

importance, and we propose to answer

it.

In the first place a Radical Board of

Commissioners gave away of the taxes

collected from the people one. hundred

and twenty Jive thousand dollars, to a

railroad corporation, without one cent

in return and against both the letter

and spirit of the law. In the next

place, Radical lawyers, one of whom

is the radical candidate for clerk, sim

ply swindled the county out, of large

amount of money, as documents here

after will show. What we say are

matters of public record.

Io 1864-5 a Republican office-hold

er proved defaulter in a large amount

of money. The Auditor of State

brought suit against the county to re

cover that sum—and John M. Butler

and the fir T.hoBjsoD & Ristiuo

were employed by the County Com

missioners to defend the County—Mr.

Thomson appearing for and in behalf

of the firm of Thomson & Ristine.

The French Cavalry.

The weakest point in the French army is the cavalry, although the present Emperor has made indefatigable efforts in its improvement. The sol diers do not lack a certain'wild courage, and are apt to hurry on to the onslaught, brandishing their long swords and uttering terrible cries, but when'near the enemy, half of them have lost all control of their horses and are carried to and Iro at random. The Prussian cavalry maneuvers ten times better, and whenever it comes to a concussion with tne enemy, it can utterly disorganize the latter ftnd bring him into complete confusion by one or two dextrous evolutions. We must not forget that this is the same cavalry that vanquished and almost annihilated the famous Hungarian cavalry during the campaign of 1 BGli, which latter had been up to that time considered invincible. It can not. he denied that the French are excellent swordsmen, but they arc so deficient, in horsemanship that they hardly find a chance for the proper use of their weapous.
