Itofal Intrigues.

The authenticity of the exlraordinary proponed sccret treaty between Franco nnd Prussia is so strongly vouched for that the public will generally be disposed to credit its genuineness, until proofs to the contrary are elicited. Assuming such a document was drawn up by Napoleon it does not seem probable that he would have proposed it Prussia without having assurances that it would be accepted. The Emperor is far too 9hrowd and cautious to incur the danger of the odium resulting from the pursuit of such a ooumo without having a strong belief that his terms would be satisfactory.

It would seem strange indeed if out of this rupture between France and Prussia should come the knowledge that the rulers of these two countries had been planning and plotting in secrot, for the absorption of minor Stated for their mutual aggrandizement. Neither of them are too honest to undertako any such intrigue. Not only are both unscrupulous men, stopping at nothing to achieve their ends, but they might attempt to justify themselves on the ground that their ancestors resorted to just such schemes and plottings. It is notorious that neither the first Napoleon nor Fredcrick the Great permitted vows or promises, or a regard for the rights of others to stand in the way of llieir ambition, and that their successors have inherited many of tlnsir trait* of character. Should it prove to he true that the Prussian King has thus boon tempted to play false to

land, it would simply be resisting a temptation to which his .incestor jioldcd. The part which Fredeiick the Great played toward Frauoo in the early years, of his reign. After the French had entered iuto in alliance with him aiid dispatched an army 'to aid him in overthrowing the young

scant of Austria and England, that if abe'la passes from the eyes »f a titAustria would code to him Sile.-ia, he -"'"cratioi from co operation

would withdraw with France and leave tho remainder of the Austrian possessions intact. Tho instructions stipulated that in order that France should not discover his perfidy, he would still keep tip an appearance of war, and lay a sham siepc to JTeisse until autumn, when, owing to tho impending snow and ice. would withdraw into winter quarters'. After making a sham defense of Noisse, the Austrians were to retire with all their guns aud material south to Vienna, and there fight the French. Maria Theresa, now reduced to dire straits, gladly accepted of these proposals, and strange to :say, they were carried out without exciting the suspicion. of the French, though the French agent or Minister accompanied Frederick's army nnd witnessed what pretended to ho a terrific ennnouading of Neisse. Frederick, furthermore] made known to the Austrian General how he could to greatest advantage assail the French. He likewise entered into a secret correspondence with the Austrian Court through Austrian Generals and the bettor to conceal his duplicity arranged with Lord llyndford to write dispatches to various Tourts complaining thai he, Frederick, "wa9 deaf to all proposals that nothing could influence him to enter into terms of reconciliation with Austria." It was so arranged that the couriers carrying these dispatches should be intercepted by the French aud the documents carried to the French Court. This amazing piece of duplicity, equaled only by Lord Marlborough's "treachery, shows what a Hohenzollcrn is capablc of doing. If such secret alliance as now unearthed really was proposed to the present King of Prussia by Napoleon, wo may rest assured that it wras not rejected lroni any scruples concerning honor or honesty. I would try the experiment and see a fight. ITe drove several hogs in the vicinity of the nest, and watched the result. The hogs soon seemed to to scent, the varmints and commenced rooting eagerly abont the spot. In an instant half a dozen of the vicious serpents emerged from their hiding places to attack the intruders, who manifested a zealous disposition to go in.

A snake would rear himself to the height of the back of a hog, shake his rattles, and plunge his fangs into the animal with lightning-like celerity, and then dart away, pursued by *the grunter, who dexterously received the sting upon the fleshy part of the jaw. Time and again this would be repeated, until the hog got his fore foot upon the snake, when he would deliberately rip Mr. Snake in twain, and then devour him. This slaughter continued until all the snakes were disposed of, when the hogs grunted cuntentedly, and without any signs of being disturbed, waddled off in search of other provender. The eye witness to this singular contest, declares himself convinced that, a pig is impervious to the poisonous bite of any kind of serpent.— CJolumbus (Ohio) ,\'rir..

Gents—About two months ago I procured a bottle of Dr. Hurley's Bitters for my wife, thinking it a pleasant tonic, but not relying mnch on its medical virtues, and it cured her of a disease she had long been under treatment for. I was afflicted in a similar way. arid got some for my own use. and am happy to say that it cured me. My disease was ot the bladder nnd kidneys. It is ccrtainly a splendid medicine. and being pleasant to take is quite a recommendation. We and our neishb-.rs have no use for .my other now.

'"pilb proprietor of this celebrated medicine justly claims for it, superiority over all remedies ever offered to the public for the safe, certain speedy and permanentournof Ague and Fever, or Chills and Fever, whether of snort or lone standing. He refers to tho entire West ana South, to bear him testimony 1u the truth of the assertion, that in no caao whatever will it foil to cure, it the directions are strictly followed and carried out. In a great many ciwes a single dose has been sufficient for a cure, and whole families have been cured by a single bottle, with a perfect restoration of general health. It is, however, prudent, and in every case more ccrtain to cure, it its tu is continued in smaller doses for a week or two after tho disease has been checked, more especially in difficult and locjt standing cases. Usually, this mcdicino will not. require an? aid to keep tho bowels in good order, should the patient, however, requiro a cathartic medicine nfter havinsr taken three or four dose? of the Tonic, a singlo dose of Hull's Vegetable Family l'ills will bo sufficient. i»K..IOHN HUljI/ri Principal OSioe .\o. lO Fifth, .'ruaantr«'rl,
