talk with the Democracy ot old Mont

gomery. T.* 1-r*' Tlie first thing I wish to speak ot is our

Convention we held down here. It has

quent effusion." I do not hesitate to pro

nounce it a made tip story from beginning

to end. I suppose the writer thinks it very

fine and extremely witty, but have heard more than one denounce it as a slanderoifs

libel throughout. A man who is lost to all sense of honor as to attack his friends in

this underhand manner, is beneath the con

tempt of a sheep-killing dog. He is so low in my estimation that I will not condescend to

say much about him. He is unworthy the

"small shot." Cousin Joe usc-s. This much

I will say though, when lie tries to defame a man like Col. McMaken. he is wasting time and ink, brains he has not.

The old Col.'s speech in the convention was all right enough, ami not at- nil us Saphead reported it. If he thought the convention was not in accordance with the orders of the. Central Committee, he had a perfect right to do so. Laying aside what was said at the convention, Col. McMaken is not a man to l3 ridiculed by such an unmittigated fool as "Reporter." Besides being a uoble old veteran, a staunch old Democrat, one of the stoutest, bjavest supporters of our party, he is the friend of the work-ing-men, the benefactor of the widow and orphan. I know benevolent deeds of Col. McMaken's which if made public, would cause "Reporter" to blush with shame, if any he hns, and sigh that himself or some of his family could not manage to get the credit of them whether they merited it or not. But I would not have the old Col. think I wish to tlattfr him, so I pass on to something which is of intense interest to us all.

I refer to unity in our party. Let u.i stand firm, lei us work together, remembering that in union there is strength. There is an oh) aud true saying which I would recommend to my Democratic friends. D. is this "The Gods help those wlio help themselves. II.iw can we better help ourselves if we wish success than by unanimity .' Remember the coining election will be the first after the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment. N not this sufficient reason why we should gird ourselves for the onslaught and stand by our guns Shall we allow ourselves to become divided, and by this means let the day be lost .' No. most emphatically NO! Democrats id' old Montgomery, look welltoyour laurels, nevei lei them grow dim! Yours earnestlv.
