A'mbng other facts which lend to this chnrge are the following: Wood during last fall owned tho place known as tho Adams property, situated a short distance east of this city. He lived therewith his daughter and the girl spoken of, the latter acting as servant. For reasons best known to herself tho daughter compelled the servant girl to leave the .house. Soon after the daughter got married and also left. Wood being alone, seut for the servant girl to come out and see him, which she did, and the two remained alone in the house all night. Still later John Wood and Mary took passage on tho steamer John L. Mas brounk from this city to New York. leaving here at seven o'clock in the evening. It is not known that they occupied one stateroom, but during the evening Wood was constantly by Mary's side on a sofa, and also escorted her to supper.

All these reports caused the leading members of the church to summon Wood before them, when specific

charges were made. He confessed the soft impeachment that he had been too intimate with the opposite sex, but denied that he was the father of Mary McNinny'a child, and offered his resignation. It was refused, and steps were taken to secure his immediate expulsion from the society. Both he aud the girl have left the citywthe lattei giving out that *he
