It: the year 432 he began his missionary labors in Ireland, and preached the Gospel with wonderful effect. While preaching to the Irish, he used Ihe shamrock or clover, with its three leaves on one stein, to illustrate the Trinity, this accounts for its adoption by the Irish nation as its emblem. Perhaps no missionary ever accomplished a greater work than St. Patrick, or one more productive of good results his life was passed in a nide age and is consequently much obscured by tradition, but the good effects caused by his preaching will continue forever.
