tremendous gales which visited
the northwest last week seem to have
been omnipotent. The Atlantic coast
of the United .States was visited and
DOW the ocean cable brings the news
that Europe was afflicted br tremen
dons gales at the Name time. All around the British coast there were unusual storms, and shipwreck are reported as numerous. In mid ocean, .at least one ship was overwhelmed, and that thero may have been others is probable, but it cannot be known un-
til the lapse of sufficient time for them to be missed or heard from. The prevalence of earthquakes, of unusually severe storms, and of other disturbances, show that our atmosphere and clcctrical currents arc being affected by some new and unknown influences. Whether they proceed from the sun, or the maguetic rays which that luminary is pushing rapidly toward the earth, is something which does not. sccra.to.be, as yet, understood.
in his Thanksgiving ser
mon, predicted that the country
.would be devided into three or four
republics. lie did not say when the division would take place, but spoke as if it might occur thirty or forty years hence, and said lie should not. regard such a division "with the detestation with which he looked upon the late rebellion in behalf of human ^slavery."
He tacitly admits the rights of statu* to withdraw from the union, and predicts that they will withdraw, and then stigmatizes the attempt of the south to secede as a rebellion.
This is nonsense. If the doctrine of secession exist? under our federal constitution, the confederates were not rebels. It is
not
necessary to deny
the existence of that doctrine to justify tho war for the union. As important material interests as were ever staked upon the issue of a war were up iu that contest.
It is untrue that the late •'rebellion" was in behalf of human Hluvery. The republican party offered to give any guarantees for the protection of the institution, where it existed, that the south might choose to demand. •&
Sectional hatred was at the bottom of our late civil war, and preachers, on both sides, did more than any other class to iuflamo that hatred.
About Money.
When one man lias money :in1
getting it, and the use of spending it.
Consequently it classifies mankind into
money-getters, money kecpeiv, and luoney-spenders. Kxcept the misers we r«ad about in novels, men do not lovo money for itself, any more than :wsoup-tickets, or baggage cliccks, or promissory notes, or title deeds. The "love of linuey" is the pleasure of mental functions i» gottiu^, ur keeping or spending. The sponge 2nd spendthrift are equally guilty with the miser. I
Tho class of mouey-getters includes merchants, gold miners, pickpockets, «Mpolitioians, and professional beggars.
Americans are great money-getters, but they do not care to keep it. llence. this is a country of great incomes, but small fortunes.
The class of money-keepers are small. Literary men are not fond off it. Lawyers are good at keeping moil particularly if it is other people s. Money, like some other essences, has a pungent sweet taste: but to keep must be corked tightly. It evaporates in the opd^air, and tho vapor is called interest. A mortgage is a condensing instrument which enables a moneykeeper to evaporate a mouey-spender.
The class of money spenders in eludes the majority of mankind. It is natD'.nl to spend money before we get it. We are born to this, and cost a great-deal before we earn anything. The power to get into debt is cssen tial to the happiness of all shiftless people, including most of the govern ments of Europe. College students aud married woman, who have 110 capacity to bind themselves, satisfy this propensity by getting their fathers and husbands in debt, if possible.

Judge Thurman, in a few remarks at a fr«e trade meeting, in Columbus, called attention to tho fact that trade between the Stntes of n»i Republic had been perfectly free since the fornation of the Government, and under that system no country has flourished like America. If free trade was good between the States of the Union, why should it oot be good between the nn lions of the world If the theory of a protective tariff is correct, then Ohio ought to have a protective tariff to exclude the products of her sister States, and should use nothing not' manufactured within her own limits,
