When his apprenticeship closed ha was urged to remain single and devote himself to preaching but tbe attractions of the subsequent Mrs. Baafta overcame him, and after maryjing he undertook blacksmithing on kia owo account. At length hi? shop and tools were totally destroyed by fire. He prayed to the Lord, nnd promised, in case he found means of building another shop and paying his debts, to relinquish business and preach. He prospered again, but for-

fOt his promise. Then suddenly he all his children. This he considered an admonition from heaven, and kenee be became a preacher. He had fifty-four appointments to different eburcheH daring his loug life, and was aa early worker in the temperance eause.

WASHINGTON is in insurrection. It is now, and has been since the war, the least orderly city on the continent. It is full of negroes who have congregated thero to be under the direct, protection of the radical bird of freedom. The Washington negroes need reconstructing worse than did the Boat lawless of any portion of the •onth.

Washington is radical by a heavy majority. Tbe greater portion of this majority is composed of "docile," "loyal," and "industrious" Africans. And yet these men and brethcrn are ooan everlasting rampage. They make Washington a second Hayti, in which negro outbreaks arc chronic. The eountry can see by tbe condition of Washington what the negro is capable of. He can vote, steal, beg, slash with a rasor, commit rape on white women, and turp the national capitol into a ceaseless refutation of the radical argument that the negro in capable of self government.

TnE president announces that he will accept no more invitations to travel this fall. This would indicate that real estate is getting dull, or else that tbe president has all oc hand that he can afford to pay taxes on.
