ty in the State Legislature, he watched and worked for the whole people, and was never more happy than when exposing with his eloquent tongue and

searching mind the frauds and scoundrelisms of political tricksters and treasury plunderers. As a canvas.-er for Democratic principles his clarion voice has been heard in every county in the State, always resulting in arous

old friend John Lee was elected President of the new company, with Mr. R. A. Hall, of Logansport, Vice President. So the work of improvement

goes on, and our city may well be proud of the important position she is rapidly taking, as one of the great railroad centres of the State. No better advice can be given to our energetic citizens than that of the old

IIANQ OF HORSK-THIEVES BROHES I IT.—A private letter from Champaign. Illinois, informs us that Messrs.

Rittenhouse and Lopez, detectives of

that city, recently captured and have iu prison, the leading members of a dangerous band of horse thieves who have been operating in this .State and Illinois for several years past. Among the number are the notorious rubbers William Anderson and James Pettigrew, who both went before Judge Steele, at Danville, plead guilty, and are now safely cnseonced in the Altou Penitentiary. James Chambers, from Toronto, this State, and several other thieves, were secured by this haul.— Lii/dt/'Sttc (Ind.) Cturicr.

Douglas' Yoiitli—Uow He Looked Dressed and Acted. Stephen A. Douglas first came to reside iu Springfield. Illinois, some time in April 1837. He had already served one term in the Legislature,

and had theu recently been appointed by President Van Buren. Register of

the Land Office of that place. At the date above mentioned he was a little, active, wiry fellow, about five feet five

and weighed not more than one hundred and ten pounds. He had a beardless, boyish fice, dark blue lustrous eyes, a short, thick neck, square shoul

ders. and a large round, bushy hoad, which somehow seeme 1 much disproportiooed to the size of his frame. He dressed plainly and rath«r slovenly, for his wardrobe was scauty, and

his finances at a low ebb. Altogether he presented quite a youthful, and, at

first view, unprepossessing appearance. JJut he was uncommonly qiick and vivacious in conversation, and he had an exuberant flow of animal spirits, which rendered him a delightful companion. ready. If an opponent was to be demolished, there was no m3n so competent to the task and he always carried the record with him to suostsntiate whatever charge he made. He was gifted in a rare degree with those peculiar qualities of head and heart which secure to their possessor the ascendency and the leadership in all matters of public concern. Even at that early period of his fortunes, his Democratic supporters considered him a prodigy of political wisdom, consulting hina as they would an oracle, and predicted for him a high destiny. But the more aspiring among his Whig acquaintances, being jealous, perhaps, of his rising reputation, riuiculed his pretensions. Mr. Douglas was just then entering, as you were, upon his brilliant and unexampled public ca reer, and was himself scarcely conscious of the possession of those amazing powers of intellect which qualified him for acting ?uch a distinguished part in national affairs.—Illinois State Register.

The Sea Lions.

On Saturday last we visited the Cliff House, situated beyond the bay on the Pacific Occan. The great attraction

there is sea lions which inhabit a clus ter of rocks 500 feet from the shore. The hotel is built on a rock foundation which is washed by the waves of the ocean, and a broad varandah is at

tached, from which we get a good view of the lions. More than a hundred of them were lying upon the jocks OB Saturday, and schools of them were playing about in the water. When they come out of the water with their fin-like feet upon the rocks, (one of which rooks is 80 feet in hight, and they jro to the very top of it,) they lie in the sun till they are thoroughly dry, then they set up a loud barking like mastiffs, and finally waddle down, and plunge head first into the water.

They resemble seals, though their heads are heavier, and they are bodily much larger. They weigh from 2,000 to 3.000 pounds, and one old fellow, the king of the colony, who has lost one eye, weighs, it is said, at least 3, 500 pounds. We saw him on the top of a high rock, and drew him up close with glasses. He was a monster piece of blubber, and roared like a bulldog. He swims over to another colony of sea lions, thirty miles distant, and spen Js two or three weeks among them about twice a year. Hi? name is •'Gonoral Butlor." Tlioae iinimnl* nrfi protected by the State laws, and are not allowed to be killed. We could distinctly see a few seals among them, and some little young sea lions. The old ones flght fc'arfully sometimes, and tear each other's flesh in a shocking manner. They have four tusks, each as large as those of an Asiatic lion.

The Effect of .Yegro Equality In Washington. Not long ago we alluded to the very serious state of affairs which now ex

ists in Washington. Ever since negro equality was established there—ever

since they had negro policemen, and, in part, a negro government ever since it became a receptacle for the worthless, abandoned and dissolute negroes from Virginia and Maryland crime has increased at au alarming rate. This is being confessed by the Radical organs. The Washington correspondent of the Qaz'ittc, under date of November G, speaks with apprehen sion "of the increase of robberies and night assaults." lie says "thai within a few days two eitizeus have disappeared under circumstances which induce the belief that they have been murdered." It is thought, that "one of them was killed on the Smithsonian grounds, and his body thrown into the junk-shop, which was burned on th2 night of his disappearance." The correspondent further tells us "that they have had a dozen incendiary fires within the week." and that "last night (Fridiy) a

:l

°g operating in one

quarter of the city, and nine clothing stores were broken open." In conclusion, he adds: "An attempt was made by a baud of colored rowdies, last night, to break up a religious meeting of negroes, and a large part of the police force was necessary to quell the riot which ensued." This is the portraiture of society iu the Federal Capital, which is drawn by so favorable a Republican artist as the correspondent of the Gazette. Nothing like this was ever known before the ascendency of the negroes in the District of Columbia. It used to be one of the best, governed towns in the United States. There can be no reform until the negro worshipers are expelled from the Capital, and the District placed once more under exclusive white rule. Until that ii done the city of Washington will be a disgrace and reproach to the country.— Cm. Eaq.

prevailed. An eye-witnes3 describes the affair as one of the most ludicrous he ever beheld. He states that Mrs. K. demanded some money from her smaller half and be refused to shell out the greenbacks that she thereupon attempted to "go through" his trowsers pockets, and that then the scrimmage commenced. The heroine of the adventure proved herself an expert adept at the ''manly art. Unlike the majority of her sex, she did not resort to hair-pulling and scratching, but struck straight out from the shoulder, and sent home "sockdolagers" calculated to demoralize a better man than poor Kennedy.

The little fellow took it all like a hero. He stood up like a littb hero, and, like the colored troops fought nobly. Blows followed each other thick and fast, in the bread basket, the potato trap, the peepers, the sneezer, and all the other localities designated in the elegant diction of the prize ring lexicographers. It was a walking away from first to last for the repre sentative of petticoats. Kennedy struggled manfully, and the rough and tumble contcst, as they rolled over the floor, upsetting chairs and tables, and demolishing crockery and furniture, formed a picture which mortal eyes seldom looks upon. At last, completely overpowered, the vanquished husband surrendered, and victory perched on the banners of the tnadame. This female warrior emerged from the contest with neither scratch or bruise, but her adversary presented a most deplorable appearance. Both eyes were dressed in mourning, the claret flowed freely from his nose, aud his "kisser was swelled to unnatural proportions while what little clothing he had on resembled that of the beggar who has been immortalized in poetry—"all tattered and torn."

After the storm there was a calm. The wife pitied the distresses of her husband, the quarrel was amicably adjusted, and the noble example was set of a victor binding up the wounds of his (or her) vanquished foe.

Yesterday afternoon an easternbound train took them from the scene of their unp'easantness and it is prob able that the fashionable b.oarding house, the life insurance office, and all the other Omaha institutions, will know them no more.—Omaha Herald Nov -Uh. .*.*•!

THERE is iu the State of Minnesota

a thrifty and populous city named St. Paul. Nobody, we believe, doubts the ability of its people to take care

of themselves without special assistance from the Federal Government and an intelligent person, if asked to point out upon the map the place whore, during the present winter season, there would be the blast possible chance for need of federal troops, would not go far estray in putting his finger upon St. Paul. There is a military post at that point, however and we observe that a hundred soldiers of the Twenty first Infantry have just gone westward to take up their quarters there for the winter. Can any mortal man, not entangled in the redtape of the War Department, tell us what good these men can possibly accomplish at St Paul As much, no doubt, as will be done by four-fifths of their fellow-soldiers elsewhere— that is to say, nothing. The fact is, of the forty thrfusand men or more, of all arras now in the army, thirty thou sand, at least, should be discharged at once, and thirty millions of dollars a year saved to the Government and the people.

TROT HIM OCT!—The Terre Haute Journul states that there is a little boy

in that city, thirteen years of age, who performs nearly as wonderfully as the Davenport lirothersln the rope-tieing business. On several occasions he has been placed in a darkened room, securely tied in a few seconds aftei be ing left alone the ropes were untied and the little fellow set at liberty. On being asked by his father how it was done, he replied that he could not tell or explain, as the business was done by some agency to him unknown.

ADMIRAL PORTER, while riding in a street car in Washington lately, was annoyed by several noisy, drunken sailors. At last he told them who he was, and demanded what ship they belonged to. Wine had given one of them wit enough to reply, "Admiral, you have changed the names of the ships so often that I don't really know what ship we do belong to."

A MOST disgusting exhibition was

given in Boston last week by a professional gormandizer, Reynolds by name, Reynolds made a wager of S10 that he

could eat within an hour all the smelts that Jerry Desmond could catch in twelve hours. Tho result of Des mobd Oshiug were 9-i smelts, which he cooked, using a pound of lard and an equal amount of meal. The fish weighed when cooked, eight pounds. In forty minutes after Reynolds sat down to his meal, the last fish had disappeared, and then he offered to eat two pounds of beefsteak if anyone would pay for it. Nobody being will ing to foot the bill, he finished hi.« meal on bread, and then wanted to bet that he would sleep twenty-three hours a day for two successive days. The Boston papers are jubilant over their "Champion Feeder."

Unprecedented Business Depression. Our New York dispatches of yesterday state that the depression in busi

ness circles is unprecedented since the panic of 1856. This depression will not take the far seeing by any surprise. It is the natural result of the financial policy of the Administration. The latter has had it in its power to relieve the country, but that would

not have been of any benefit to the bondholders and National Bankers, in whose behalf they have chosen not to do it.

For the sake of adding to the genera! distrust, out of which they may make a harvest of gaius, the bankers of New York are considering the propriety of exacting an agreement from their customers that they shall take payment in the same money they deposit. This, of course, is a thrust at the greenb icks as legal tenders, and a preparation for a short descent to a gold standard, by which descent all those in dobt will be either broken or seriously crippled in all their finaucial resources.

Unless alarmed by the threatening signs, the Administration change its policy in a radical manner, we shall probably see a financial simoon that will be perfectly destructive to the business and industrial interest of the country. Our people will be obliged to pay, and very dearly, too, for the support they have given to the bondholding and National Bank aristoc racy, under the name of the Republican party.— Cincinnati Enquirer.
