Cariosity.

The Dunkirk Journal says that a curious individual was greatly perplexed at the opening of the Masonic rooms, the other night, to understand the why and whereforo of the three large candles which had conspieious positions. He viewed theui ou all ^sides, thoughtfully sumuiiug up in his mind their probable use. At last his patience was exhausted, and turning suddenly about made bold ta ask a

Mason "what those candles were for."' The Mason, looking about him to see that no ono was near, and exacting the 'most solemn promises of secresv, got close up to the ear of his friend, and with 'bated breath whispered "The ^candles are to burn." The curious man hasn't told any person about it, bat somehow, such things will leak out,

A Singular Character—The Hermit or Moose Klrcr. At the head of A lean jiond. on Mooso river, lives Martin Lockyere,.§7 years ohl. an Englishman hy birth, who has hoeu there lti years, living like a hermit alone in a .small log hut, on a small island, Hi* nearCBt neighbor is Pat. McKenny, *ix miles down the river, through whom ho cotnmunicatcs with the outside world whenever occasion tequires. but as his wants arc few, this docs nol of ten happen. In his younger days he cleared quite apiece of land which he owns, from which he raises a little bay, potatoes &c., which he sells to wood-cutters in winter, which gives him all the money he needs, and, with•nt doubt, some to spare. He is rarely reen in tho settlement, although sometimes ho is obliged to go, owing to the absence of his neighbor "Pat." He declines to be beholden to anyone for the smallest thing will not even accept an almanac (which he always wants), issued by some patent medicine concern which of course is freely givcn away, preferring to be perfectly independent, and therefore insists on paying for the same. ITia only companions are six cats, which come down to the landing whenever he returns from his farm (which is on the opposite side of the river). They oach have a name, and seem to enjoy the society of their master very much. They are rather shy of strangers, al though they can bo coaxed to make friends by using considerable care. He is a most repulsive-looking object, looking as though he had not kuown the contact of water for several years, his face and such portions of his body are visable being covered with a crust of dirt almost half an inch thick. His clothes are in rags, his face unshaven, and his hair uncut aud uncombed. He seems-quito feeble and will not probably live much longer. Probably he would almost renew his youth if ho would take good bath but a favorublo eeason of the yeav would have to bo taken, for such a sudden change might prove to much for his foeble constitution. A party from Boston, that visited him hut a short time since, were strongly tempted to perform his ablutions for him, but fear of consequences to him alone saved him. His hut is a curiosity, everything that is useful to him being hung from the walls—his farming implements, traps, rods and iines for fishing, cooking utensils, &c. ITe pretends to be possessed of an immense estate in England, and that, his will is made, and when it. is opeucd will astonish tho world. Whether they are the ravings of a half-crazy man or not, time alone can tell. Re is certainly an object of pity, although he docs not ask pity or sympathy, and said, in answer to a question of one of the above party, that he should like to have some one give him tho signification of the word "lonely," us "no man was alone except God hated him. and he pitied such a person." He evidently is a man that has met with some misfortune or disappointment in life, and feels called to tako the course of non-intercourse with hi? IVllowmen.

RICHAnn V. HOVEY has been officiating as a missionary Baptist preacher in Lincoln county Missouri, for some time. The Warren llmmr snvs: "After preaching some three weeks he was takcu suddenly ill, made his will, willing some 860,(JuO worth of property to various individuals, and $30,000 to Miss Emma Holiday, of Truxton. As it happened, he recovered from his illness, and on the 4th inst. was married to Miss Emma, and they went to Florence on a preaching expedition. After preaching several days thoy went to Danville, where he got drunk, said he had eight wives besides Emma, and intended to have another before two months. At Pan ville he let his wife know that he intended to leave the country. She being interested for herself and the owner of the horse and buggy, refus ed to go with him, and took the reins and drove to Florence, where she told Hovey that she was done with him, and sent for her father. Hovey learned that he would be arrested for obtaining money on his forged certifi eatcs of deposit, and took leg bail through a corn-field. Hovey hails from New York State, and is about forty-nine years old.
