The advent in our city of Madam Von Gobcrt, the celebrated clairvoyant, has caused no little stir and excitement in spiritual circles. Her knowledge of pnst and future events are said, by thoso who have called upon her, to be wonderful and miraculous. As she will remain but a few dnys longer at the Richardson House, every person who has a desire to know something of the future. should call and see her.
The eastern mail due here every evening is now divided between the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago, and the Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western Railroads, each bringing portion. The Postmaster at Indianapolis will confer a favor on ourcitizens by reprimanding the blockheadfclerks in his office and compel them to perform their duties aright. All mail matter for the Crawfordsville office should be aent by the latter road.
Baknabas
Uobbs,
the radical Stato Su
perintendent of Public Instruction, lectured at the New School church a few nights since. Barnabas is a slight improvement on the romantic Hoss. whose unfledged genius auiaied our village pedagogues, a few month* since still, Barnabas is hardly the right man in the right place. Iiis ideas of how to conduct public schools, and the proper methods of teaching, are crude and Utopian. In nature, he is sectarian and bigoted, and under his administration we may look to see our public schools perverted and the religious dogmas and absurdities of the day impressed upon the minds o.f our chil* dren.

the
Davexports.—Last night a party came over from Lonisvillc to attend the seance of the Davenport Brothers and expoae them. Soon after the light was pat out and the coat was put on Fay, one of the party lighted a phosphorescent powder contained in a tin lid and it set in the aisle. Instantly the house was lighted up and great confusion ensued. The Davenports denounced the man as a coward and called upon him to. show himself, but no person seems to have seen who Ptrtick the light, at any rate they did not tell. Threats of putting out the offender were loudly made and some short words were passed between a mon from Louisville and one of the^brothers in regard to an allusion made about a party from that city who had threatened to follow ihem here for the purpose of exposing them. Finally all was quieted down and the •how went on. Unfortunately the light was struck a little too soon to make any discovery, but we cannot say it was exactly (he falrthingto violate the rules of the performers even" though a violation might lead to the detection of Fny in the trick. Some are of the opinion that the DaveDports did the trick themselves in order Io gain the sympathies of the audience, but we doubt it, as Fay turned as white ft? a corpse at the instant the light flnehed up.—AVw Albany LEDGER.
The Davenports are expert jugglers. Their performance here several years ago was decidedly clever and amusing, and well worth the price of admission. Vet with all their art they were detected by the simple use of printers ink, which left its indelible stain upon their hands, proving at once conclusively and beyond all doubt that they themselves did the feat of untying the rope, thumping the banjo, &c., And that the '-spirits" had no haud whatever in the matter. Should ihey again visit, our city they mny rely on drawing good houses. They are unquestionably the beat juprplers traveling.

The Indianapolis, Bloomington & Western Railroad, having^ received their new and magnificent palace cars, will make up a train on next Monday, the 8th, for a grand excursion to the capital of the State.' The citizens of Crawfordsville will have the privilege of enjoying a rich treat on next Monday evening in hearing Dr. Louis da Silva deliver his celebrated Lecture on the Ilistorj- of the Jesuits, lie having been a pupil of that order, and is well acquainted with its spirit and plans. The author has evidently not written this book in a hurry. While there is not a rinplepoint in the subject overlooked, the style of composition and method of treating each branch of the theme, area strong evidence that the greatest care and study were taken in its preparation. Prof. Parson's is old in low. Long a student, long a practioner, and long the roost eminent teacher of Law in the land, lie is well fitted to prepare such a work. This Book we can heartily "ndorse. We wish there was a copy in every house in the country. We hope that nonian will refuse to subscribe for this valuable work, when the chance is offered lo him by the Agent. The study of this Book will make a man a complete Business Lawyer. And for the saving of many bard-earned dollars let every man have it. II. C. Worthy of Attention.
T« Dr. Tboiunn A. ilurlry: I hereby certify that during the last year I was attacked with the Ague while in Vicksburg, Miss., and used several pt-pular patent medicines with but temporary relief. On reaching home the disease returned in a worse type, if possible, when my medical attendant ordered Quinine, in large doses, frequently as high as 60 grains per day, and which must have cost me nearly S100. 1 consulted Dr. Smith, of Louisville, and found he prescribed Quinine and Arsenic, combined, which I refused to take, preferring to let the disease take its course. I was almost bloodless, extremely exhausted, and pronounced with enlarged Liver and Spleen. At about this time the advertisement of Hurley's Ague Tonic appeared in a city paper, and I determined to give it a trial. 1 did so and have no reason to regret it. One bottle restored me completely, and since that time I have seen nearly a hundred cases in which it acted with equally happy result, and would certainly recommend it as preferable to any other Tonic before the public. JAMES MARTIN, Engineer, '•ouisvillo. Ky.. June 14, 1603.

Professor Parsons' Laws of Business. We have received the above work from the publishers. Having given i! an examination, we nre strongly urged by our own belief of the worth of ihe Book, to give it nn editorial notice. This Treaiise aims to bring an accurate and useful understanding of the Laws of Business to every person in the land. A work of this kind has 'long been in the utmost demnnd and we feel satisfied that none of the kind heretofore published are lo any estent so well written and so useful as that of Prof. Parson's. No man lives who does not have more or less legal business to attend to. and a person not being posted on the i/orfuj operandi naturally goes to a lawyer and has it done for him, and ihe cost of the one case, is frequently more than double what this work would cost— If every man would get a copy of this Book and preserve it, he would be able to do all his own legal business himself, and at the same time, his knowledge of genera! useful law, would be much improved.
