Bnt, upon entering the room in which the babiTwas lying, :i horrible Hpectacle met their view. In their abscnce a monster serpent, of the blue racer species, had entered the open door, crawled to the cradle, and twined itself around the body of the infaut, placed its head in the child's mouth, and in this manner had deprived it of its life.
The husband, upon beholding the hideous monster, and comprehending its fatal act upon IUH child, in a frenzy of excitement turned upon his wife, whom he had bidden while in the field, to come to their child, and, without a word of upbraiding or warning, struck her a fearful blow ou the head with the hoe which he held in his hand. She sank to the floor and immediately expired, the sbarpe edge of the hoc having pierced to her brain. The husband, finding himself wifeless, childless, and a murderer, rushed from his home to the neighbors, proclaiming his guilt, a raving maniac.
These arc the particulars, as related to us by a gentleman of high social standing and veracity, and who has visited the locality."
A Laughable Scene—A (Jay Lothario Comes to Grief. Quite a ludicrous scone was enacted
on our streets ou last Friday luoruing.
It deems that a certain young lady of
this place received a note from souic
unknown person, proposing a clandes-
tino meeting lor tho purpose of gettiug
acquainted, &c. The young lady at
oncn showed the note lo her mother, who thereupon declared her iutentiou
of horsewhiping a certain young man
whom she suspected 'of being guilty of
writing the note. Several days passed
and nothing more was heard of the
affair, and those acquainted with the
faots supposed it had hlowu over. Hut
on Friday morning another note was
received, this time by the girl's mother, and it was supposed to have been written by the same young gentleman. This was too muoh for her to stand, so ahe resolved to oarry out her intention of horsewhipping the aforesaid young man. She prepared herself with a good-sized whip, and started in search of the young man. She found him at work as usual, and exclaiming, "I have got you now, you little devil," she began to lay on the lash in a furious manner. The young man rushed past, hor and into tho street, she following after him. After a short race down .Main street, the young man turned upon his antagonist, and tlu light began in earnest. After a while they clinched and were about to fall to the ground together, wheu they were part ed by the bystaners. Just at this moment the husband of the lady made his appearance, and another row between him and tho young man was only prevented by the fact that about this time it began to almost pour down rain, and all hands were glad to seek shelter. The fight was witnessed by a large crowd, who had collccted in town because of the rainy state of the weather. The affair furnished something for our citizens to discuss and laugh over, and ou the whole it was quite au agreeable change from the usual dullness of the times at this season of the year. It was certainly the richest scene which has been enacted upon our streets for some time.—

ago the opiuion was expressed by a

bridge, England, that if the earth
atmosphere were but increased thirteen thousand yards in hight, so as to have an increased power of retaining the warmth poured upon it from "outer space, we might do without the sun altogether, so lar as our heat supply is concerned. More recently, by means of tn instrument called the galvanometer, used iu connection with a re- I fracting telescope, it has not only betss proved that tho stars actually give heat to the earth, but the comparative amount of heat received from different atars has been, as it were measured.
A THIRSTV Quaker stopped at a
