As noon approached, the first attempt was made for his rescue. A large raft had been constructed of heavy plank, bound together crosswise, and this was to be lowered down from the bridge, with strong ropes, to the castaway, when it was thought he could be drawn up wit'aoul great difficulty. The venture was a failure from the start, The rapids seized it and whirled it away before the men at the ropes could check it the ropes became entangled, and the raft was carried far below the rock, aud at last went hopelessly over the falls.

It was a bitter, bitter disappointment—as well to the sympathizing, expectant throng as to the imperiled man. But, nothing daunted, tho stout hearts aud ready hands immediately set about tho making of another raft, while others were occupied in conveying food and drink to poor Avery. This was easily done in tin cases, attached to stout cords, which were floated down to him. Tho castaway ate his solitary meal there upon that accessible point of rock with keen relish, and then stood up and bowed his thanks. Again and again the cheering words, "Wc will save you," were exhibited, and he was encouraged by other short sentences in his native language, which were in the same way painted in large letters and held up to him.

The afternoon siowly wore on—the long, hot, listless summer afternoon there in Niagara, usually devoted to idling over iced drinks in the shade of the hotel porches or parlors, but now cheerfully given up to the assistance of or sympathizing for, a fellow-being. There were hundreds in the crdwd who, prompted by that spirit of American chivalry which is never wanting among us, would have cheerfully plunged in to his rescue, could the act, have been other than useless foolhardiness and there were wealthy men there, who went through the crowd, under the deepest, sense of emotion, offering large rewards to whoever would rescue hiin. The telegraph had, by this time, carried the news far and wide the afternoon papers of New York on this day contained it, and the afternoon trains from Buffalo and Rochester came freighted with hundreds more to view the peril of the poor German for themselves.

The building of the second raft progressed but although everything was done to hasten it, darkness found it unfinished, and the crowd unwillingly dispersed for the night. The Omniscient alone can tell how that poor, forlorn soul passed the dark, dreary hours that intervened before morning, sleepless from necessity, weary, lonely, with the waters raging like unchained beasts all aronnd him, and the great abyss yawning almost at his feet. Some sweet hope must have sustained him in that trying time, or the morning would have found him dead there upon the rock of his dreadful exile.

Daylight came, aud with it the eager crowds hastened back to their points of sight. The incoming trains all that, day brought more and more spectators, and before noon the bridge was literally crowed with them, leaving but a small space in the centre

Our Government, does n»vi do this. It does not. protect labor. I has, to pay a debt, given a mountain of United States bonds, interest payable in gold, and declared by illegal legislation, that, all money invested in these bonds shall be exempt from taxation. These bonds are the notes somebody must pay. They are simply notes of hand, given by the people through and by Congress. Their basis is labor— the work, not of those who hold, but the ones who are expected to pay them.

Seven year ago John Jones sold all the property he owned and bought gold. This gold he sold at the rate of one dollar in gold for two dollars in greenbacks. He had twenty thousand dollars in gold—sold it for forty thousand dollars in greenbacks, and with these bought forty thousand dollars' worth of United States bonds.

These bonds bring him in each year four thousand dollars in greenbacks.

He has never paid one dollar of tax for any purpose since he withdrew his money from his store and farm and invested in bonds.

The money he has received as interest, comes from the ones who do not hold bonds.

Eight years ago he had twenty thousand dollars in gold. He sold it. He has received in eight years, on his forty thousand dollars' worth of bonds, bought with his twenty thousand dollars in gold, thirty-two thousand dollars interest, in paper money, oi, as gold now rates, twenty thousand dollars in gold, exactly what he had at the first.

And now his bonds are still in his pocket—he demands, year after year, the interest, and when the time comes, forty thousand dollars in gold!

This is the bond system. No wonder bondholders are satisfied. Eight years agD John Smith owned a farm worth twenty thousand dollars. He has worked it ever since—has made from it one thousand dollars a ycn£ besides taxes, and his farm is worth just about what it was eight years ago. He has paid taxes by the hundreds of dollars. John Jones has not, been called on for a dollar of tax. His money invested in bonds, is exempt. Me has been protected by John Smith.
