public spirited man,
and nothing delights him more than to 'see some work of internal improvement, lie attends all meetings and other gatli'erings looking toward the promotion of these objects, and was never known to bo '.Lockward ill subscribing to any cause calculated to advance the best interests of
St. Louis. Having given this short history of tho Uiaii and his aspirations, it is unnecessary to add that he was present at the Millers' and Flour Merchants' Convention, held at the Merchants' Kxehange, last Wednesday, and made one or two vigorous speeches.
When evening came it required but little urging to prevail upon him to stay at the banquet. 15eing of a social nature and much interested in the objects of the convention, lie came to the conclusion =t-that if lie could advance those objects by ?*«!"*taking a scat at a well filled suppor table '^Vjand putting down a few glasses of Ileid-
Vidck, ho would do it and so Air. Z. stay,|ed. It was late—or early, rather—when the company broke up to go home. There t" is nothing extraordinary in this circuuistance, but our duty as a faithful histori-•-'''ail compels us to disclose the fact that
Mr. 'A. was slightly fuddled, or, if this is loo harsh a term, elevated. His eyes fair- I I) twinkled with merriment, and lie became possessed with such an inordinate 1 desir" for speech making that he was onlj s.(!c«ml by a couple of gentlemen clapplug tlieir handkerchiefs over his mouth and leading him from the room.
In this unsteady, uncertain and totter"k ini condition. Mr. 7.. was conveyed to his home and left at the street door. Here he dismissed the kind friends who had piloted him with a paternal blessing, and "j then addressed himself to the task cf. getting iuto the house and to bed without 1 mousing tho partner of his bosom. This undertaking, however, involved consider- 1 able difficulty. Their sleeping room was 1 in the second story, third door from the stairway landing, and although Z. could li- have found it well enough at other times jet at this particular juncture he felt flighty uueertain. He opened the door softly and commenced to creep up stairs,
It seemed to liini as though ho weighed a ton, for .each and every stair seemed to 1 gro.m and sijucak with pain, and in an agony of desparation he clung to the bannisters. Arriving at the top he groped lirouud in the darkness until his hand ume in contact with the knob of the door, and imagiuing that it led to the couch where reposed his partner in the dreams of innocence, he turned it softly and entered. lie would not light the gas, but disrobed in the dark, and off came his coat, vest and pants, and last his boots. He thought ho could not be mistaken in the room, for he detected articles of dress such as could be worn by uone but a feminine.
Ho tangled himsolf in a set of hoops, stubbed his too agaiust some I'rei^cli corsets, £".ud mentally swearing at Mrs. Z. for
leaving her things where lie could stumLie over them, shutllcd up slowly to the bedside, and. turning down the cIo*«.es was in the act of placing his le^r beneath, when a piereinir sereani broke out upon the midnight air ami a white rohe».l figure jumped like lightning fn»m the bed, ami going to the window, shouted "Help help save me it's a man!'' The whole house was soon in an uproar. A policeman, three blocks distant, hearing the hubbub, started for the sceuc, shaking his rattle •vigorously as he ran but Mrs. who slept in the room adjoining, was the first tn rush to the rescue. We shall not attempt to describe the sight that met her eyes on bursting open the door. There in a corner, screaming with might and main, was the young lady guest that she had invited to spend the evening with her. ami there by tho bedside stood Mr. /., jnriK iintiiralHni.i, looking as though I he had been fooled by Balaam's ass, and was about to be turned out of green pasturps. Mrs. X. gave one long agonizing look, and muttered out: "Oh! you naughty, naughty man/' and then tumbled backwards in a dead faint, while the unfeeling wreteh alluded to sat down in a chair.

t.v Woi'.\iKr.—Wo have heard the particulars of a most shocking affair that occurred at Laconia, Harrison county, on the evening of the Fourth of July, botween two brothers named Kingsley. The Kinglcys are represented as exceedingly ([uarrelsome and dangerous characters—men who were considered bullies —anil who were often embroiled in fights and difficulties.
On the evening of the fourth the parties met at Laconia, where they renowed a ijuarrel that had taken placo between them sometime previous. The quarrel grew furious and finally resulted in a desperate fight between the two brothers, in which knives and other weapons were used. Both parties were very seriously, and probably fatally injured, and have, our informant states, been confined to their beds ever since the row, with but slight Unpen of recovery. did not Jearu what the rjuarrol orignated about, but our informant states that the brothers had fought on a previous occasion, and since the fight had not been on friendly terms. -The affair, oil account of the. relationship of the combatants and the sanguinary character of the contest, between tlieni, created a great deal of excitement in the neighborhood of Laconia. Hotli men are represented as bullies, and the terror of their neighborhood while under the influence of liquor and both are said to have been druuk when the bloody fight, between thetu occurred on the fourth. Hoth will probably dio from the effects of their wounds.
