It is needless to say that like tlic wife of the loyal Ilittitc, she yielded to his blandishments. Love's dalliances however could not long be concealed, the dark curtains of night somehow betrayed an envious rent, exposing the lovers to more than suspicion. The husband, good soul, became curious, and to satisfy a morbid desire to know more, he gq^pout that he was going on a journey, and providing himselt with script and stair, started off ostensibly on his tour. His absence soon became known to our gay Lothario, who, in his joy determined to '-have a night of it," and with his psalmist lie warbled forth the delightful strain— "Then let the wide world was a? it IVi 11,

THE great project of building the east and west railway from Indianapolis to Danville is attracting marked atteiftion abroad. It is conceded, by rail road men, that the road when opened will be the most direct route from the Atlantic cities to San Francisco. In 1870, four years from this time, the great iron railway across the continent will be com. pleted. It is this fact that has given such a stimulus lo the building of east and west roads whose geographical location connects them with the Pacific trade. Never in tho history of any county was there ever such a golden prize offered as is presented Montgomery county in accepting the favorable propositions offered to secure this road, which virtually places lier, for all time to come, on the great highway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific. All along the route, from Indianapolis to Danville, we have the gratifying intelligouoo that tho peoplo are alive to their interest, and that the subscription donations is being rapidly made up.
I'll be gay and happy still." With the first appearance of the twinkling stars, he stole, under the soft rays of Venus to the embraces of his inamorata. Snugly ensconced, the lovers took their fill of love and whilod the'-happy hours away" until the clock told tho midnight hour of twelve. Scarcely had the chimes of the last stroke that marked the hours died away when there came a thundering rap at the door, a terrible summons to open sesame, which amused the guilty couple to a lively !?cnsc of the "situation." Instantly our Don Juan leaped with a frantic energy to the lloor. Seeing no hope of escape from the house, he darted under the bed. Iu the meantime the fallen live, who had by this time recovered her composure, unbarred the door and let in her liege lord, who, after a short investigation in the dark, retired, satisfied in his own mind that nothing wrong had taken 'place during his absence. He was allowed but a few minutes however to repose his wearied limbs. His wife complained of being seriously ill—-a sudden attack of cramp cholic having seized her, and she insisted that he go for the doctor immediately. The gon.l man arose, and hastily dressing himself, started on his errand. On his way he upbraided himself for allowing the green-eyed monster to take possession of his soul, and doubt the chastity of his better half. While thus ruminating, he thrust his hand down into his breeches pocket with the exclamation: "Jenkins, what a fool von are to doubt her,'' when lo and behold, his hand came iu contact with large knife and a bunch of keys. Amazed and bewildered, lie doubted for a moment his identity. With a shudder lie convulsively sounded the other pocket when he dxe'-N forth a pletUwiu puc'itet hook well stuffed with greenbacks. Horrors upon horrors, this was more than mortal man could bear (we don't mean the greenbacks.'! On further inspection the fact was revealed that he was encased in another man's breeches, the utnorous owner having dropped them by the side of the bed when ho retired with his charmer, and in his haste nt concealment forgot to draw them in under the bed with him. This was "the feather that broke the camel's back." For a moment he stood like an enraged tiger, when a happy thought Strilck'liim, niul lio roHnlved to ramose and leave the choleric partner of his former joys lo the tender mercies of the gay deceiver, and cxclaiming with the dusky Moor of Venice 'lie who itcnls uiy rruss steal* trash.
Hut ho who filches from me my (food NAMK, Takes that which not.enriches him. And leaves HE poor indeed." Thus justifying himself, lie lit out to unknown regions with the purse said to contain over a thousand dollars In greenbacks, and has not since been heard of.
