One hundred and forty thousand pounds ^even tons) of the best Juniata iron were placed in three furnaces, the largest quantity in one being 68,0(10 pounds, and /B'tho remainder about equally divided between the other two. The fires were lighted at 7A o'clock Monday morning, and three hours aud a half (U o'clock) afterward the furnaces were tapped and the molten metal begun flowing from -g^through conducts at oposite sides into the mould, which was filled in 27 minutes, during which time a stream of water pascd in and out of the core barrel at. the rate of 20 gallons per minute, the water increasing in temperature in 10 minutes from 60 to 110 degrees, aud in 40 minutes to 120 degrees. The ousting i'rfwas accomplished successfully, and without the slightest accident. The weight of the gun in the rough, when taken from from the mold, will be about 140,000 pounds, and when finished 1)5,000 its greatest diameter nine-four iuches, at the muzzle thirty-eight by seventy inches
In length one huudred and eighty-nine inches, bore one hundred aud fifty-seven inches. The gun is intended for the navy service, and is considerable shorter that others of like caliber heretofore cast.
Wlieu finished, it will be tested at the proving ground, for which a ball weighing one thousand pounds will be used also nine charges of mammoth powder, the first three of sixty pounds each, the next three of eighty pounds, and the lust three of one hundred pounds each. •WEj

The Pnsl and the Present.
The New York Tribune (Radical, as it is of the inost ultra sect), iu a late urticlo under the head of "The Reward of Crime" among other things, said "There was a time when to be virtuous was respectable in this community, and whon meu bequeathed to their childreu as a legacy above price the inheritance of a good name—a time when public virtue and personal integrity went hand in hand, and rogues were shunned and pointed at as example? to deter the young from a life of iufauiy. Justice was not made a mockery then to the aristocratic thief who had stolen his half a million. He could not purchase with it the aid of corrupt pardonbrokers. Theft was called theft, and crime aud the good oltLproverb 'Honesty is the best policy' haa not come into contempt, and been scouted at by Chief
Magistrates as a snare aud delusion. But what shall we say of tho latter days, when the swindling contractors of the war roll along the Avenue iu emblazoned carriages without having been imprisoued a day or fined a dollar for their crimes when the most expert and dangerous counterfeiters of our public securities are enlarged for a price paid to the pardon-broker aud when such villians as Salomon Kolinstamp are let off with a paltry punishment, and restored to the enjoyment of of their stolen treasure?"
Stew
Our eotemporary most unwittingly and uuthinkiugly, probably, has borne th.e strongest kind of testimony iu favor of the good old Democratic times, which its Radical policy has superseded, and the fruits of which arc so well portrayed. In those times of honesty, to which the Tribune alludes, the people voted the Democratic tieket. aud conducted the Government upon its theory of administration. Now, wlieu they have run off after the Radical illusion, we find corruption, dishonesty and rottenness pervading, by the admission of the Radical organs themselves, every phase of society. Whether this social corruption is the result of tho political rascality, or whether the latter begot the former, or whether they are mutual parts of the same system, is immaterial, so far as the moral which we desire to point is concerned. The fact remains, that when people were socially pure, they adhered to the Democratic faith, till, when they became impure and corrupt, Radicalism in politics suited them exactly.

staff of Queen Arictoria's kitchen
includes a chief cook, three master cooks, two veoinen of the kitchen, two roasting cooks and four apprentices. There are also two larders and storers, a storekeeper, two green officc men, three kitchen maids, and two men to superintend steam apparatus. Tho salary of the chief cook is about S3.500 a year that of the muster cooks about a moiety of that sum. The chief and master cooks have tho privilege of taking'the apprentices, of wliom there are now four the premium which is received lrom each (averaging from £150 to £200) being divided as "per agreement" between them. The salaries and wages of the other persons in the kitchen very from 10s. per week to £175 per year. A lad who is apprenticed to one of the Queen's cooks has the chance, if he conducts himself properly of obtaining u.situation iu the kitchen at the expiration of his term. The first step is in the event of a vacancy or of one being created, the situation of larder and sometimes, if he have friends aud influences, lie obtains the situation of clerk in the Controller's office, The chiefs of the kitchen dine by themselves at three o'clock, the chair being taken by her Majesty's chief cook, or in his absence by the senior cook. The apprentices dine with the scourers, kitchen maids, etc.
More Radical Morality.
Dr. Kitchen, a well known radical in Berks county, Pennsylvania, was convicted last fall of an assault with intent to kill, upon Daniel Hcaly. lie was not satisfied with the verdict, of course, and before he was sentenced, his counsel filed reasons for a new trial, which was ultimately granted. The caso was to come on at the April session of the court, when an unnconditionul pardon was produced by Dr. Kitchen, from Governor Geary! This is a fine display of partisan partiality. A pardon, of course, carries with it a virtual admission of guilt in the case, and it was intended as a means of exculpating the accused from doservod punishment. This Kitchen had been active supporter of Geary's election, and is rewarded for his party services by a virtual permit from the Governor to commit assaults with intent to kill whenever ha may please. This is radical morality. That is what is meant by radical respect for the law, and that is the way radicalism deals out impartial justice!—Detroit Free Press.
The Woud "White" Stuickkn Out.
—The Logan Gazette relates a peculiar circumstance which happened some months siuce in Champaign county. A Quaker widower, tired of siugle-blessed-ncss, hunted up a second wife, whom he found in a strong "manhood sufferagc" neighborhood. He took her to his home, and time flew on with azure wings, they indulging in bright dreams. And, says tho Gazette, somotimes in those dreams tlioy would imagine that the word "whito" was stricken from the Constitution, and start from their slumber in ecstacies of joy. And thus the pensive autumn receded before the stern breath of winter, and anon the spring-time came, "gentle Annie," and with it hyacinths, and bird carols, and into the household of our Quaker—a
