unfriendly spirit toward Kncrlatid.
In fact it is gathered from high au

I TilK attempt if 11. LORD, sometime
since, to get possession of the Indianapolis and Tern Haute road, was defeated
(by the IYunsylvauin Central, who in-
I formed the gentleman that if he did pur-
chase it they would build a rival route
alongside of it. This threat frightened off Mr. L. Sit)fe then the road has pas-
sed into the hands of the Pennsylvania
Central, who have now a direct and eon-
trolling route to St. Louis. This master
stroke of the Central has stirred up the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad that has
as yet, no direct outlet to the creat West,
while their rival has trium phautly reached
out its iron arms to grasp the golden traf
fic ot the Pacific. Of course the railroad chess bosrd will be deeplv studied
by the Baltimore and Ohio, and if we are
not greatly mistaken, they will surmount
all obstacles and reach the Mississippi.
THEKK are threatening indications that
the peace of Europe will be brokeu be
fore the close of the year by a collision between the great prowers of France and
Prussia, and which may involve within
its fiery folds the entire eoutinent. It is
to be hoped that wise counsels may pre
vail, and that these great nations may abstain from the savagery and barbarism of
armed conflict. Dr. Vruukliu truly said,
"There never was a good war or a bad peace."
THE Democracy of Ohio are certain to
carry the State in the electiou to be held
next October. Negro suffrage and the disfranchisement of thirty thousand white
men, who served during the war, up to
the surrender of Richmond, when they
left the servicc without waiting for the
formality of a discharge, is too bitter a
pill to be swallowed by the peeple. Some
of the radical leaders are beginniug to
see their mistake, but the more ultra
swear that there shall be no backing down.

Sign or the Future. \/i
An election for Mayor of Pensaeola.
under the military despotism bill, recent
ly took place. Blacks and whites voted,
and a full vote was polled. The issue was whether the whites or the negroes
should control the municipal government of the city. And the interest was increas
ed by the idea that Florida was to be a
negro State, that would be giveu over to
that class of population, which would
send to Congress negro Bepresentatives. The Radical candidate for Mayor waB a MajoT in a negro regiment stationed at
the Pensacola Navy-yard. The opposing
candidate had been a Captain in the Con-
federate service. All tho white men iu
Pensacola, except two or three, and a
great many of the negrees voted for the
latter. 1'or the former a large negro
vote was cast, but ho was bealen by one hundred and thirteen votes. The negroes
who voted for the Badieal candidate were
extremely indignant that ho should have been beaten, and threats were boldly
made of their intention to burn the place.
The matter became so serious that the re-
tiring Mayor sent to Gcueral Seymour,
at Barrancas, for troops to quail the outbreak. A detachment of mounted men
were promptly sent, and the excitement
speedily quited down. The future of the
negro voting experiment is suggested by
the above experiment. The whites will rule or the blacks will rule which shall it be?
it,
Massachusetts and California on Prohibition.
A Popular I'lau to Pay Off the National Debt. The Cincinnati Knpuirer says that
the oppressive taxation and its inju
rious effects upon business and industry is now creating a great deal of talk and
discussion and different popular remedies
have been suggested to meet the evil.
The last we have heard was this, proposed
among quite an audience of Indiana farmers casually drawn together, and of
^different polities. It was suggested that
I in order to relieve the people of one
hundred and eighty millions of dollars which we tire paying on the bonds in in
terest that the whole principal be imme
diately paid otV by an issue of a sufficient amount, of greenback currency in legal-
tender. Thus the debt would be trans
ferred from the bauds of tho few who
charge imnicncc interest for it into those of the many who will charge none. It
is true the greenbacks are not on par with
gold, but neither was the money which
which the bond-holders originally lent
the Government. In fact the money lent the Government was then worth only
forty or fifty cents on a dollar, iu gold,
whereas now greenbacks are double that
rate. It was believed, as our informant
assures us, by the farmers present, that
the greatest benefit would be derived
from the issue of this large amount of currency into the channel of circulation.
They were convinced it would relieve
the depression which now prevails, stimu
late enterprise, increase the price of labor
and greatly add to the prosperity of the
country. Our informant, who has traveled extensively through the West, is con
vinced that nothing would be more popu
lar than this scehme to immediately pay
off the National debt, thus diminishing
our taxation by from one-half to a third, and greatly adding to financial ease and
enterprise.
The Radical Party.
In his political sermon last Sunday (see Independent) Henry Ward Beecher refer
red to the "corruptions of polities, the
flagrant venality of legislation," as one of the evidences of the demoralization of
the times, lie declared that "the men at
Washington and Albany sold their coun
try they sold their humanity aud their
honor, and the trusts that were put upon
theui by their constituents. They were
debauches of the young, they were the traitors they that lifted the sword were
not half so much traitors they that de
spoiled the old banner and trod it under
foot, they that fired upon the Govern
ment of the Uuited States were not so
much traitors as were those vermin who were crawling under the foundations and
destroying by corruption the vital power
of the Government." That is a striking portrait of the Radicalism najv„mliiu* t)j~—
lry- ,s
threw him into a solitary cell, without trial or even a warrant from ajusticc of the peace.
The papers hearing of this act of tyranny,
made such a buzz around the Radical Governor's ears, that lie thought it politic
to liberate thc man after several days incar
ceration. Talk about the despotism of
Kuropc! Its veriest despot would scorn
to commit such acts as Fletcher and other Radical officials we could name have un-
blushingly committed
A SHORT time since a Chicago merchant when called upon to contribute something
iu behalf of the starving women and
children of the South, proposed to donate
arsenic. Tho other day, in Springfield,

the same object in view—the relief of destitute Southerners. At the head of a
subscription list appeared the following:
"I will give the amount set opposite my name to purchase powder and lead to be used in the South, provided the same is used by a loyal agent.

The Connecticut Courant says "it is a
little singular to note how different is the action of the two extremes of the Union
just now. While Massachusetts, by means of a State officer clothed with powers
more arbitrary than those exercise by a
Grand Constable of France iu the days
of tho Bourbons, is emptying her wine
barrels into the gutter. California is straining every nerve to promote the cul
tivation of the grape, and increasing her manufacture of wines by half a
a million of gallons annually. By the
time the Pacific Bailroad is completed

Our Trcatmclit of
thc
South.
Tho New York uituiid Table criticises
with just and keen temerity, and in foreiblo language, the ftestnieut our Govern
ment, under Radical auspices, lias inoted
out to our vanquished enemy. The want ol magnanimity slu*ii and cruelty of
our conduct, is admhibly alluded to in a hypothetical strain, which however, is
simple and actual fci'ts. and really de
scribes in the close vliat lias occurred. It says:
"Our brother lies prostrate upon the earth, unnerved, crushed in spirit, bleeding at every pore from tho tremeudous and finally irresistible blows dealt by superior strength. He too proud to ask for pity or to sue foruiercy. lie turns toward us a still brave but despairing front, and whispers but one faint word— justice. Is it ours to set him on his feet to bind up his wounds, to share him our crust and our cup, and. confident in our own massive strength, IO bid liitn henceforth to be with us and of us, free aud equal, while we only vie with each other in throwing the veil of magnanimous oblivion over the past? Or is it the nobler part of us to seize the opportunity to grind him into the dust, to swathe his nerveless limbs with gyves and letters, to take every base and pitiful precaution lest he repay our generosity by stealing hereafter to our bedside to assassinate us while sleepiug? We may, indeed take the latter ignoble course and be safe—at least for a time but will he ever be our brother again?"
Home of Lincoln Democratic. Thc Democracy have carried the city of Springfiold, III., the home of the
"late lamented," by a majority of
one hundred and four. The Register,
announcing the result, says:
"W congratulate the Democracy oil their victory, which was won by the most strenous exertions, against the efforts of the Kadieal-extra-loyal-high-tax party. Let the fact that this victory has been accomplished nerve the people for the contest with the sam« «.ty which occu-s on next Tuesday. One i'nited effort by the entire Democratic party will give the people the control of the city government fc.r the next year."
ROBKRT J. Walker and W. M. Evarts, of New York, are to argue tho motion before the Supreme Court of the United States, for an injunction restraining the President fioni enforcing the so-called reconstruction law iu the Southern States. They are both very able and the whole question of constitutional power connected with the law will undoubtedly, be presented with great clearness aud ability.
