Republican Proscription or Workingmen in Connecticut. The Hartford Times gives the following account of the proscription of workingnien in Connecticut by Republican i.'tnIjloyerf-, for having dared to vote their political sentiments. The workingmen can see by such demonstrations that the professed regards for their interests on the part of the dominant party, ends when they have the independence to think and net for themselves., -JJays the Times: "We have chronicled the fact that the Republican managers of the factories in Rockvillc have discharged fifty of their employes who voted the Democratic ticket. They put on the ground that they were niuiubors ot tho llockville Workiugmen's League and say they will turn away any operative ill the various mills who belong to that League. They have at the same time added an hour a day to the hours of labor—making twelve hours and cut dowu their wages ten per cent. This infamous proscription of men who differ with them in politics, shows how insincere the Republican.-: were in claiming, before the election, to be the friends and champions of the workingmen. It does not cow down the workingmen so mueli as these Now England slave drivers cspected it would for the names of fifty new members were enrolled on the League the very night following the day of this proscription. Many ol the discharged men have dependent families and need assistence.

In Windsor Locks a workingman was discharged on election day because he voted against the Republicans.

In Portland the most shameful coercion of workingmen has for years been practiced by the Republican employers. Men were told by open proclamation that they should lose their situations if they dared to vote the Democratic ticket. That ohumeful course last year gave the town to U)0 radicals, but they met some difficulty in repeating the programme this year, for the workingmen organized a Protective League, and announced their purpose to vote. Most of them did vote, and they carried the town, gaining-00 or 70 votes.

For this assertion of their rights a9 freemen, the ouarrynien were notified by the quarry owners that ilicir servioes will not be required for the year to come.

But this proscription proved too bad a dose even fcr the ]'jublican workingmen on whom the quarry owners rolied to continue, work. These yien, on learning of the shameful treatment to which their fellow workmen had been .subjected, noted like men. They throw dowu their picks and drills, and told the owners that tliey would no longer work.

The result is that a thousand men have sinceLlTu'sday, beou idle at Portland, and at all tho quarries work has ceased!

4

A lafgc'and intensely interesting inceting was held at Middlctowu last night (Friday), to consider what course ought to be taken to protect the workiugmen of the (quarries* Mr. Gallagher, of New Jluvon, Mr. Hubbard, Mr. Griffin, and Mr. Hacon, of Middletown, made addresses. It was yesolvod to stand by the workingmen, and a committee was appointed to visit the quarry owners at once and see what terms of adjustment they were willing to accede to.

Si UKrom tlie Ni-cnnk (Wis.) Times. April S.J A Fl'sratory Inundation. Yftsterday tuorning tho villagers of Ncenah anil Menasha were greatly astunished at the report that the. numerous wilU and manufactories that line the races were compelled to stop work. Such a thing as tho water failing hero coming as it does directly from Laka Winnebago, ncvcr'was heard of before, and the causo of such an unloukcd for effect was earnestly fought. And here the most wonderful" pbenomenou we have never been failed upon to chronicle, was made manifest. Our roport-cr, who furnishes the faots,, hasUiued,. to the race in Neeuah, wli(&e lie' was told by'niillers w'ho bad investigated the matter, that the waterwheels were unable to revolve because they wore clogged with lish. .Unwilling i% fo''believe such an absurd statement ho JL- proceeded to investigate for himself' and '••V vu„-,- jt|( |](, following result: Commencing his

investigations at the cotton factory, and going from thence to the oxtensive lialtic Print Works on the race, our reporter found the flumes and entire race alike filled wiUi fish. -.AlKof .the races in Neeriuh -nnd'Menasha. and botli: branches of the Fox River, were literally filled with fish, to Uie exclusion of the water, wlich vfusnthrcyfii baok' liy-thb great flsh dam till the banks wero in danger ol' ovcr-: flowing.

As soon as the news spread thousands of people flocked in from the villages and country to spe the Strange sight. Oshkosh and Appleton furnished their share of Visitors. If we had not struck oil, at least we "had found fish. Aud all kinds of fish—from the smallest perch to sturgeons .weighing a hundred pounds. There wero pike, bass, sun fish, sturgeons cat-fish, and oceasionly, large, fat floundering white-fish and salmon-trout greeted the eyes of the boys and men who were by this time busy in securing a supply of fish in so easy a manner, as merely taking them by hand I Boys carried off strings of fish as heavy as themselves while teamsters unloaded their freight and filled their wagons with the finny tribe. It would be impossible to estimate tho amount of fish secured that day. They were discovered at day-break, and about dusk a break was effectod in their ranks aud they went dowu the river toward

The PositloMdfJhtc South t'nder the MilliarjyJespoUsm Kill. Those who^aK) puzxling.their brains to know whethefe'thc Sfuith: will acccpt or not, acccpt the •provisions oif-[tlie Jlilitary Despotism Bill, will be enlightened by the following, which we take from' the Richmond Wjiig. It says: -v

It seems that some persons can not or will nQ^MMderstand nhy thing :Wo have UOt. been cailed on lo "accept" or ^consent.'' AVo .are »sked n0|Odds about it. We have been' simply required to obey, and armies and generals have b,een sent dbwu auiodg.ua, till dotVuselcss as wc are' to ma he. us oboy. We accept all this as Mr. Davis accepts imprisonment at Fortress Monroe as Xapoleon accepted it at St. Helena.

The military government which is here enforced—not "aceep'sd" in any other sense than of submission and obedienoo —cOutcniplates the holding of certain, elections, according to certain forms, At these elections it proposes to'allow some of the citizens to vote. This privilcger if availed of, may softeu the" machineryto which we are subjected, new horrors may be added to it. Virtually, it is the.'' unanimous' sentiment of our people—of the proscribed even more than the others —that such as are invited to take part* in the elections should do so. To rejectj the mitigations of the Military Bill, wliilc.^ compelled to yield to its sway, would be ai absurd as to afiirtn that to profit by them is to accept assent to, consent to,1' approve, indorse the bill itself as abaurdd ns to maintain that Bonap irte by shcl--, tcring himself in the hou. prepared for^ him at Longwood, and',"afcce!ptib'g"' the," food placed- before li'vm, nteepbid, indorsed i^nd approyod liis banishment ^liither. 1
