find the following item in one of our exchanges
"Five thousand men are out of work in l'ittsburg."
IIow is thi?? Pittsburg is a manufac
turing city and bur manufactures are
protected by an almost prohibitory tariff —yet five thousand of her arti?.:in~ and
operatives, as wc are informed, are out of
work. In New England, tilso. after an
incroa.se of tariff, the wages of the laborers are reduced not only, but thousands
who have no other moans of subsistence are thrown out of employ. The objeet
of a high tariff is to protect American labor, or rather that is the argument
which the so-called protectionists use to fasten such a policy tipon the country,
but the practical workings of the system
demonstrate that it is only the capitalist,
the owners of manufacturing establish
ments, who are benefitted by it. 'J'l.e
profits which a tariffs secures to
the manufacturing interests does not
reach the laborer—they do not increase his compensation. The manufac
turing establishments of New Kugland are
dividing from twenty to one hundred per
cent, upon the invested capital, but the
uien, the women, .and the children whose labor produces these enormous profits onlv get about enough compensation to provide
for their immediate necessities. Aud if (/iri»-n nuii the inter
ests of the manufacturer#—the owners of
stock in manufacturing establishments—
they often sutler for the very necessaries
of life. This is illustrated in the brief puragrapli we |ote at the head of this ar
ticle—"five tbour-ind men are out of em
ploy at PittsburL'." Who can tell the
privations, the .suffering, and the destitu
tion of the families of these five thousand men thus thrown out of employ?

et we are told that the object of a pro
hibitory tariff is to protect American la.
hor! Facts best demonstrate the fallacy. The producing industry of the country
is put under tribute—a heavy tribute—to
sustain the protective policy, to build up
and enrich the New England and Eastern
manufacturing interests, hut it is a policy
which fails to protect American labor, for in 1 ittsburg alone five thousand men
are out of work, so it is all through tbe manufacturing districts.

A Sl'Ki.'K of Ait.—A late cable tele grain announced as probable that Hol
land would cede Luxemburg to France.
The French Coitrhr, of New York, while
seeming to think the news probable, says it needs confirmation.
Luxemburg belongs to tbe King of Holland, but was a member of the iatc (iurinan Confederation. When .Prussia annihilated that Confederation, the King of Holland continued to assert his claim to his ancient possession: but Prussia, who garrisoned it, claimed to be the heir of all tne goods and chattels of the defunct Confederation, and refused to give it up. It has recently increased its garrison am! is now adding to its fortifications. Holland unable to succeed atraitist Prussia, propose to bring into play a stronger power, by ceding the Duchy to France.

There can be very little doubt, if this i.s done but there will be speedy war between Prussia and France. The former is not likely to surrender a foot of tierman soil. :itnl the latter is iu no temper now to submit, to any thing approaching an insult trom any quarter.
