The iprll Election.

The importance of the April election which takes place on the first Monday of the month, should be considered by every Democrat in the county. Especially in Union township, do we urge npon all true patriots to turn out on that day and see that their neighbors do the same. Now is the time to strike a blow. Our prospects are no darker or shrouded in more gloom than were those of our sires of '70, when on thnt memorable December night,

WASUISHTON crossed the Delaware and surprised the Hessians at Trenton. Let every true Union man be at his post on the day of election and make a bold, manly, honest fight, and our word for U, we shall gain a glorious victory. Remember—

Freedom's battle once begun. llcqucnlhtnl from bleeding siro to son, Though hafik'd oft is ever won."

THE coolest tiling that Black Republicanism has been guilty of for the last month i» their protest ngninst a monarchical government being set up in the Cunadas, demanding that no government shall be established in North America that is not republican in form. How the peopU of Canada, or in any other part of God's green earth, can create a more degpotic and tyrannical government than the one now existing under the rule of the Rump at Washington, is past our comprehension. The rule of the Hussion Ciar is mild and parental compared to the contralized Washingdespotism. Republican government 110 longer exists on the North American continent. To call the once sovereign States of tho old confederacy a republic is a hollow mockery a lie that the most abandoned despot would blush to utter.

"So far as we have been able to learn, the fruit buds in this locality have not injured to any extent by the severe winter through which we have just passed, and the prospects now are for a good crop of all the different kinds of fruit grown in Central Ohio. The New Theology.

A clergyman went into one of our primary schools a few days ago, says the Charlestown Adn rtinrr. aud after hearing the pupils read, spell, etc., thought he would have a chapter of catechism. After sundry questions and satisfactory replies, he said: ''Who is the father of lies?" A six year older promptly replied "Trod." '"Why do you think God is the /other of lies?" Six year older replied as promptly as before. "Because he is futhe.r of us all." The teacher hid her face and her smiles behind a primer, while the reverend gentleman was for the moment struck dumb with dismay by such logic. Recovering, however, he forthwith explained.

Department Commanders.

The special Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette states, "on excellent authority." that the President after a long interview with General Grant and the Secretary of War, decided upon the following arrangement of Southern military commanders under the reconstruction act: General Schofield for Virginia, General Sickles for North and South Carolina, General Thomas for Georgia, Florida and Alabama, General Sheridan for Louisiana aud Texas,, and General Ord for Mississippi and Arkansas.

The correspondent of the T-nursday, says that "the Cabinet on that day had again under discussion the assignment of military officers to the five Southern Districts, but the list was not completed. They will be fully announced during the present week.

The American Piano Forte Trade. As an item of interest to the thousands

of piano buyers in the Northwest, we publish the following article from the Now York Tribune of February 23d:

Twenty-five years ago the number of pianos made in America was exceedingly small. The workmanship of these, with few exceptions, was inferior to that of Kurope. Musical taste and musical demand grew rapidly, however, and American inventors began to revolutionize the Old World theory of piano structure. The value of the improvements thus effected in the making of pianos has been admitted by the world generally. By testimony of the most eminent musical professors our own pianos are decidedly superior to those of Europe.

The annexed statement is founded on the sworn returns under the iuternal Revenue laws of fifteen widely known manufacturers of New York, Boston and

Kaltitnore. Exclusive of Baltimore, for which wc have no returns of pianos, it will be seen that during the year 18G6 there were no less than 7,i)8G pianos made and sold by those fifteen firms of three cities. The sales produced S3,1S4,0!I2 158 out of which sum was paid a manufacturers tax of S171.51333. It is a still more remarkable fact that the leading manufacturer of New York and that of Boston jointly realized hy their sales 81,652,440 30, while the other thirteen makers combined sold to the extent of 81,531,643. The two firms beloneincr to New York and Boston paid, iti fact, more than onc-halfof the Government tax collected. The following is the exhibit
