Impeachment.

The impeachment, conviction, and removal of the President of the United States is a solemn proceeding that should not be entered upon for Tight causes, should uot be prosecuted except inufrr circumstances ir/ierr the national safety re quired it, and then only upon clear cases of criminal arts, sustained by unquestionable proofs. sufficient to justify a formal impeachment of the President and a temporary paralysis of the executive power of the Government.

The Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives, who have had the President's conduct on examination before them, in their report give little or no encouragement to the impeachment proposition, and while no one is bound to consider their view of the matter as final, it tends to show that there is not that directness in the j'roofs of actual crime which should attend a trial of the magnitude and national importance of a solemn impeachment of a President of the United States.— Chicago Tribune, (Radical.)

I. N. CARESS.—The supposition uow in regard to the disappearance of Mr. Caress is that he was drowned in attempting to cross White river. A gentleman who was at the depot when Mr. Caress bought his ticket says that he purchased a ticket for Mitchell and not for Indianapolis, as was first supposed. Mr. Caress's mother lives in the neighbarhood of Mitchell, beyond White river. It thought in attempting to cross tho rivor on the ice, which was at that time rapidly melting, that it gave way aud he was drowned. Wo hope this supposition may not prove true, as also the one that he was murdered, and that Mr. Caress may vet turn up alive anil well, but there is scarcely Toom for hope. The American I'lano Forte Trade. As au item of interest to the thousands of piauo buyers iu the Northwest, we publish the following article from the New York Tribune of February 23d

Twenty-five years ago the nuinbW^'of pianos made in America was exceedingly small. The workmanship of these, with few exceptions, was inferior to that of Europe. Musical taste and musical demand grew rapidly, however, and American inventors began to revolutionize the Old World theory of piano structure. The value of the improvements thus effected iu the making of pianos has been admitted by the world generally. By testimony of the most eminent musical professors our own pianos are decidedly superior to those of Europe.

The annexed statement is fouuded on the sworn returns under the internal Revenue laws of fifteen widely known manufacturers of New York, Boston aud Baltimore. Exclusive of Baltimore, for which wo have no returns of pianos, it will be seen that during the year 18GC there were no less than 7,98(i pianos made and sold by these fifteen firms of three cities. The sales produced $3,18-1,092 38 out of which sum was paid a manufacturers tax of bl71,513 33. It is a still more remarkable fact that the leading manufacturer of New York and that of Bostou jointly realized by their sales $1,J52,440 30, while the other thirteen makers combined sold to the extont of $1,531,643. The two firms belonging to New York and Bostou paid, in fact, more than one-half of the Government tax collected. The following is the exhibit:

Everything that science and skill could do, was done for the little one, but there she lay upon her bed of anguish, bound with cords, suffering what no human peu can describe, yet evincing in her madness a desire to injure even those who loved her best. Her sufferings were too much for human forbearance, her agony too great to allow eveu her fond parents to witness it, and the question arose how shall this be ended? After a long and painful consultation, the conclusion was arrived at that the best and most humane course to pursue was to put an end to the poor sufferer's life. Who can picture the feeling of the dear little one's friends as the announcement was made that she must die? Who can imagine the rejoicings of the poor one, as it wus released from the worn arid tortured body The ouly effectual and easiest means of ending her trials was decided to be suffocation, and while she was in one of her worst paroxysms she was seized and and smothered to death. Though to some this was harsh and crucl, yet in our estimation it was a far better course than to allow the little one to live in paiti, anguish and agony for a few short hours, suffering the pains and anguish of untold hells.—Detroit Union, March 2nd-
