A Writable Klsli Story—A Boy Dragged Several Mocks Through the Hater by a Fish.
Fish stories arc proverbially discreditable—so much so, that when wo get hold of a good one, we are almost loth to tell it for fear our statements may be laughed at. However despite this, we will relate an lucidcnt which happened yesterday, and which was told us by a gentleman whose voracity we- have never had occasion to doubt. it soems thnt a number of men and boys were at work almost opposite the Detroit und Milwaukee Depot, when one of the number saw an enormous sturgeon swimming near the surface of the water close by the dock. The party armed themselves with poles and other weapons while a boy named Patrick Nolan procured a boat hook and resolved upon the capture ol tho monster. Patrick made a lunge at the fish, and caught the hook in its back, but before he had tunc to brace himself and haul the fish on the dock, it darted out into the river, jerking him from lus looting into, the icy water, 'lhe boy held on to the boat hook aud was dragged with great velocity out into the middle of the stream, and then out toward the lake. 1 ho spectators, meanwhile, were almost paralyzed with terror. I'hey were powerless to help Nolau. and could only look on and see bun dragged through the water by a monstrous fish at a rato of speed exceeding that of the fastest row-boat. They called to him to release his hold of the boat-hook, but lie, cither too much terrified lo heed, or not bciug able to hear clung to it as il it was lus only hope of life. The monster fish, maddened by pain and terrified by the load lie was draggim:, lashed the water into flakes ol foam n» lie sped outward toward the great lake, never staying in his mad course. Death seemed the only fate awaiting the boy, and one or two of those oti shore klicit down and implored the mercy of Ueavon upon his soul as he last receded from then sight,—perhaps forever. Providentially, however, a couple of fishermen, who were a boat near the aw ind although unable, at that distance, to

WEEKLY REVrEW-CRAWPORDSVllLE, INDIANA, SATURDAY, MAKCII !), ISIiT.
From Our kass» City Correspondent. KAN^S CITY, MISSOUHI, March 4th, 1807.
MR. C. H. BOWEN, Dear Str.'-iLSitice my return here I have been 'endeavoring to learn all tho
particulars of interest to those of my
friends in Criwfordsville,—Carpenters
Bricklayers, ajiii others, mechanics, ,-'.io
are or lmvc lioei thinking of emigrating
to this poiut,—Mid iu compliance with a
promise made .item a short tune asio will
first, state, that business ot all kinds is, aud has been lor some weeks, quite dull.
but that the prospects for the future arc,
however, quite t'atterinir. and all those in
mercantile pursuits are looking lorward
to a larn'ii trade as soon as spring opens. Iu consequence ol the present stagnation,
a backset is gtveu to our private enterpri
ses in the way ol builuing, and from
those who may be regarded as competent
to jiuliie, learn it is hardly probable that there will be as much ot that done this year us last, and unless there is au increase iu this respect there will be no more work lor mechanics than will be necessary to give steady employment to those already here. It this opinion is correct, aud such is certainly tho indication. I cau offer uo encouragement to uiy Crawfordsville friends to come here just yet awhile anyhow. It is possible that by April or May next, matters may look altogether different, and il so, it will still not be too late to commence a season here, and should hue prospect be my ludgiueut. presented these gentlemen, it will aflord me much pleasure and I certaiuly will let them know it. Mechanics of all kinds received good wages during the past year. Carpenters getting from three to six dollars per day, aud bricklayers lroni three to seven, depending, of course ou the skill ol the man. while laborers were paid from thirty to ninety dollars per mouth.
In relercnce to expenses for living I will state that good board is obtained at from six to seven dollars oer week, and at still lowor rates at inferior houses.
Our public enterprises in the way of building railroads are still moving along finely. A large force is at work on our Missouri lliver railroad bridge opposite this place, which will be completed early next fall, this with the Kansas City and Cameron railroad, eonnectinir with the Hannibal and St. .Joe road, and the completion of the bridge over the Mississippi River at Quincy Illinois, will give us by October or November next, an unbroken railway line to the Atlantic seaboard. Along with these enterprises work is going ahead ou the west, branch of the North Missouri. The Kansas City and St. Joe and the Kansas City and Neaslio alley railroads, which with the roads already completed or nearly so, will give us seven railroads centering here. The future of Kansas Gity is certainly very promising, and that it will ultimately become a great city of the west, is the opinion of evory one familiar with its geographical position, natural advantages, &.c., &.c. At present, however. I regard it as probably the ugliest place out of $ fcuol', 1 think, would be the opinion ol least), not born and raised among lulls and hollows, and therefore familiar with a level or gently undulating piece of land.
Trusting that this may convey all the information desired, I am, Sir, J"1 erj Respectfully &.i

A t'OKKE.SIONl)ENT of the Utica T" I I'll nip h, writing from Schuyler's Lake, Oswesio, N. gives the following description ol the whipping of a little boy in a school at that place:
A little boy nine or ten years of aire, named Willie P. Woods, was attending school at the place before mentioned, the same being under the charire of" Miss Harriet Rose. Four weeks ago (January 24), one of the scholars in moving across the school-room, stumbled over a stick of wood, which caused a general laugh, in which Willie joined, whereupon Miss Rose eonimcuced beating him with a ruler about the shoulders and on the back of his hands, and when he sought to protect his hands by placing them behind him, she struck him upon the head, once above the right eye and once below it. After school was dismissed, Willie returned home to take his bed, upon which he still remaius, a great sufferer. The eye, if its sight is uot entirely destroyed, will bo
