A Hcncgadc Democrat Photographed.

were amused a few days since in hearing a conversation between a couple of old radical politicians of our city, in regard to the progress their party had made since the advent in this country of George Thoinpsou, member of the British Parliament, and one of the principal founders of the disunion, negro equality party in the northern States. In the course of their conversation they enme to speak of the proselytes they had gained from the ranks of the Democratic party, when one of them remarked that "for dirty work, he always preferred a renegade Democrat, one, who while acting with his party was always whining for some little office, such as village postmaster, justice of the peace, township assessor, etc., eto., which, failing to secure, he straightway experienced a new dispensatiou, a sudden cliunge of political opinions, and immediately sought affiliations with the 'Union purty. into whose folds he found

of happiness in nourishing a deep feeling of i-orengo against the ungratefulness of his parly." "Such fellows," continued this old ndroit politician, whom we wore now listening to with rapt nttention, "are the veriest lickspittles—their cringing, abject obsequiousness as they fawn upon their new masters, renders them fit tools for the meanest., dirtiest work iinnginable. Is there a ballot box to be stuffed, false oath sworn, brtiliil, ruffian intimidation at tho polls, exercised to secure party success, or malignant, cowardly abuse of those whom this very wretch formerly acted with, and ofT of whose bounty he lived, he is the very dog to do the dirty work." "Ho is," added the old man, now wanning up on the subject, "the scavenger, the night carter, the foul bird of prey, whose touch is contamination and whose breath is the Stygian cesspool of rottenness and dead men's bones."

The above picturo, drawn by a uinn who IIIIB studied politics for years, and who, we believe, not. to be over squeamish himself in political trickery, presents a likeness, which although rather overdrawn, nevertheless is so truthfully portrayed, that no one can fail to recognize the features of such a scoundrel.

TUB old story of the countryman and tho little joker, "now you see it and now you don't,' waH re'enacted on a big scale on laBt Monday. The Crosby Opera House drop game shut down on its victims, in Chicago, on last Monday, notting tho snug Bum of over a million of dollars. The dupes who bet on the little joker being in the right place, were scattered throughout ever state north of Mason and Dixon's line, in fact (here was scarcely a neighborhood that had not its

innocents,

We had the pleasure of enjoying a game supper, on last Tuesday night, at the old Hays, restaurant, now occupied by G. \V. DRISKELL. Messrs. J. II. VANAKSHALL, 1. M. YANI and W. 3. FRY, three veteran hunters and renowned sportsmen, wero our hostB, and to whom we wore indebted for the feast, bagged on last Tuesday the choicest lot of game ever taken in our county, consisting of wood cocks, pheasants, quails, teal ducks, wild turkeys and squirrels. The supper was cooked in an admirable stylo by THORNTON PELKKV, chief of the culinary department, of this favorite dining saloon. Among the .distinguished guests present we noticed Gen.^M. D. MAN-SON.

Tho uffuir was deoidedly tho most

Small Quantity.

The proprietors of Coe's Cough Balsam say tako littlo and often. Doctor the throat and bronchial tubes, not the stomach. This is tho secret of its success. It will not linrm you to take it often, and every time you take il you will seo its beneficial effects. $

OUR streets were enlivened by tho sweet and enohanting strains of the Silver Band on last Thursday afternoon. These accomplished musicians discoursed thoir bewitching music from a four horse sleigh, drawn by four animated quadrupeds of tho equine species, and drivon by ft lineal desooudant of lltiui. The turn out was success. We again repent, what we have always said, that our city has the finest band in the State.
