Successful Farming.
A Urge form ami ft suflieiont capital arc not nil thut is ncees^iv i.» inM.ro .success, lndool, moans of »ny kin.l would bo little loss thai. useless. If ihcy were not »io available nntl 10 make ilu-.-o nuv.ns available, requires a ceriain degree of business tact that many do not possess: or possessing it, tliey fail to excrcise it to advantage. N'a"turo gives us an example in ll»s, *3 in ill other branches of industry, that the farmer would do well to follow.
When the Creator of the universe formed matter out of nothing. He mr.de it with fixed and definite principles, to which it must conform, for (ho purpose of carrying out and developing some grand scheme in the economy "f nature. Tlio rain, the sunshine, the seasons ami the soil, are means employed for the production of vegetable mailer. This matter is one of a variety of means for the support of animal life and nniinal life is for another object and all work, or are employed, harmoniously together, for the purpose of carrying out the first grand plan.
The result of an inappropriate use of these means may be easily imagined. We see, then, that the economy of nature is, or should be, the cconomv of husbandry, since it tenches so important a lesson. A proper and judicious use of the available means which every farmer may possess requires some skill and ingenuity: and also a plan that may be, sometimes, difficult to tix on. but when once formed, every means should be properly employed, and every energy taxed to put it into execution. lie who carries out his plans in this man-'-nsr knows what he is doing, and is not likely to be discouraged tor the want of some assurance of success. New theories and current hmnbugs will not be likely to interfere with his success, nor make him their victim, and these theories and humbugs have, soinctimes, no little influence, especially in these times of steam and progress. He sure you are right and then go ahead,' is a maxim that is true, and wit which men of every business would do well to follow and. indeed, they cannot succeed unless Uiey do
It is not right, because it is not economy," to have more business than e:in be properly attended to or in other wor'ls. to possess more means tlian can be employed to advantage. A largo farm poorly managed, or a large capital improperly employed, is productive of more losses and embarrassments, than a smaller farm, and a smaller capital, managed with system and economy. Th^ disadvantage of having too many irons in the fire at once, is a fault, common to the
American people. T'h- promptings of ambition and nil eager desire for wealth aro, like great many other passions, when properly i: exercised, noble and honorable, and contribute to success, both in social and business life.
IVe have said that the principle element of success in husbandry is a correct plan or system. As to the details of this plan of operations, every farmer must, of course, consult his own discretion, guided by his means, and the force of surrounding circumstances. Tlie exactness and system that characterizes the operations and workings of every department of nature, teach an important lesson. The laws that detect Uiese are immutable, exact and uniform and (.-vcu Uie wind—the emblem of caprice—is dj,-acn-\ bv a never changing law.

orderly and so continue all their lives. If the young animal is taught to respect a fence, it will ever after consider a fence nn impassible barrier. How much better this than lionpies, pokes and other inconvenient, and painful appliances to prevent trespass, which prevention is after all only partial. At the weaning period many voting animals learn to jump. If they are effectually confined 'iv a fence, then a very valuable lesson and habit are imparted to them. I have bred and raised many colts, but not one that ever jumped a fence. My method of weaninj: them wn« to placo the colt in good pasture alongside of an extra fence, with a box attached to the fence in which to place a cjuart or two of oats daily. On the otlior Bide of the fence I allowed the mnrc to run. The fence was made to hold_ the colt then, and it never afterwards had, aii equal inducement to leap. Moore'. Rural Xni- Yorker.

Many persons reed hens too Much for laying. To keep twenty liens through the winter, give three pints corn and two of oats or buckwheat per day also, about twice a week, giYe them shorts or bran wet with warm, sour ..milk, of whlcli they seem very fond make it quite wet and put in a large spoonful of ground black pepper. Give them all the green stuff that can be had, such as cabbage leaves, parings of apples, c9res aad nil, kc. So fed, with comfortable quarters, tliey will lty all winter. Keep'only early spring pallets.' Change cocks every spring. In proof of the above, wc will..merely observe that a-neighbor had, among a lot of liens, one that would not lay under any 'circumstances and as'such liens are not profitably to ltccp, she was considered a'fit subject for the' pot.
