AGRICULTURAL.

profitable the nest season. It is the right time to make improvements, tor in the spring tho energies of the gardner sire directed to planting. Kvery farmer should now resolve to have a goml gardeu next year. If such an appendage to the farm has not beet) made heretofore, select at once a haudy. suitable plat, undcrtlrain it. trench or plow very deep, eurieh it, raise a few beds for t''e earlier vegetables, and keep a firm determination to prosecute the good work unto the end.

The work of securing properly the

products of the vegetable garden must be speedily finished. Hoots keep fresh for table use when packed in earth, mid the cellar should have bins of masonry, filled with dry ioaui or sand, for this purpose.

Cabbages may be put in a trench, roots downward, and covered with boards and manure to prevent excessive freezing.— The mice may make havoc with them, however. Another way is to sink a cask in a dry spot, put the eaVbages in it and cover well. They keep very good by merely pulling and inverting them on the spot where they grew, the head resting on the fresh cartli. We have kept them sound and fresh in ...thb...m.inner until spring.

Celery should be pulled with the roots and stored in a trench, packed tight, then covered sufficiently to prevent freezing. You want it handy to take out for use.— Begin packing the trench at the upper end and take out for use where the packing was finished.

Horse-radish and parsnips should be dug iu sufficient quantities for winter use. That for spring eating keeps best in the ground.

Beds of rhubarb may be made bv dividing the roots, keeping an eye with each piece, and setting in rich soil.

Cover the asparagus bed with coarse litter. If part be covered deep enough to prevent freezing it will irrow earlier in the spring.

1

observed the

same thing as the result of shading vegetation. Hut this experimenter went further than this aud deduced the conclusion that if sunlight is essetisial to vegitat/on it must be cijually so to the animal economy. Hence uu experiment, with pigs shut up iu a warm, dark place, was made with results corresponding to those in the case of the potatoes and cabbages, showing that sunlight and proper circulation of air are as cssensial to the animal as to the vegetable economy.

Pear Tree—llo'w to Fruit. A correspondeul of the Wool gays: "I will tell you of an experimen I tried to make a peur tree bear. About 23 years ago I planted a small pear tree of the Virgalieu variety. It is now a very large aud elegant tree. Kvery spring it would be covered with blossoms, and just after the fruit began to form, the stems would all fall off and cover the ground. Iu the autumn of 1SG1 I determined to try an experiment that sho'd either kill or cure. The ground was dug away five or six feet around the trunk and down to the roots. A small wagon load of clay was first put in and made into a mortar on the top of this I put a

barrcl of iron filings, and then over this a barrel of air-slacked lime, and the dirt] was thrown buck over the whole. Last year (1862) the tree blossomed as usual, a few of tho. weakest stems fell off, but I enough remained to load down the tree I with luscious fruit."

FOOD IN MONTANA.—Accounts from 'Helena, Montana, state that produce is .^getting lower. Mexican sheep are amoving there by the thousand and sell on an "..average at three dollars per head. At the last dates forty thousand head of „cattle were on the way to the mining regions from Mexico and California.— ^Twenty-five thousand sacks of flour from ..Salt Lake were in store at Helena. ,.,s.

SALT AND ASHES FOK HORSES.—An exchange says that horses will derive much benefit from a feed, twice a week, of Ealt and ashes mixed, three parts of the former to one of the latter. It is said to be relished by the animals and tends to promote their health. If a small portion of ground sulphur is occasionally added, the effect will prove beneficial.
