"ref.lv to vmir

West Purliiim siiWriWr. I will I have had lionsidor.iljly experience in

eranliorrj' cnlturc. 'I lie vines arc very hardy and will live iiu^t anywhere where

anything else will l"»nt to be successful we must study nature :ind improve

on it as luiuh its we ran. ("niiiherries want a poor, porous nuhstimi-e that will

retain the moisture to ruw in. and i!

nothing else will grow, so much the better. A piece of ground that is naturally

wet. or enu be until so. is indispensable,

though stagnant water will soon kill the

vines, consequently stagnant ponds or

puddles having 110 outlet, should be

avoided. Clay soil is not tit to set the

vines in with any hope success. A

snndv loam will answer, the poorer the better, though a soil of pure muck is

the best that has been found yet, provid

ing vou can remove all oilier vegetation

or keep it from growing. For that pur

pose, clean sand is the best. have a meadow of about ten acres, on the softest

part of which there was about three

acres that the grass did not grow well, it

was not worth cutting, except for bed

ding. being mostly a fine brake. I removed turf to the muck and set to cran

berry vines, kept weeds and grass out all

1 could for two or three, years. The last two years they have uot done so

well as 1 expected. The cause, I think

is in not flowiug them enough, as the dam I built gave out three years ago last

fall. They out to be flowed during cold

weather to protect the vines, also quite

often in. warm weather to destroy the in

sects that prey on the vines or berry. I

think a good rule would bo to flood as

soon as they beirin to blow, and then in

about two weeks after that, and once a

month till the berries are ripe. And then they ought to be picked by hand,

as it is a wasteful, slovenly way to rake

them, unless you merely rake them

enough to break the berry from the vine, and gather them by flowing. They will

keep in a cool, dry cellar better than apples, as I have proved. 1 have some in

eellent condition now. Sumo put them in tight barrels and then fill them witli^watcr.—

Improving Grass Land. The St. .lohnshury (Vt.j Caledonian

gives the particulars of the management

of a piece of land in that town owned by

Messrs. D. & '1. Fairbanks A Co., con- I

taining tiro and one-half acres, which had

not produced

for

several years over one 1

ton of hay per acre. Tt was plowed in

the month of August,

sowed one-hall bushel timothy and ten pounds or clover seed to tV»c acre,

and again harrowed ami Tolled. There were eut. from this piece of SO (J

the last week in June, eight ions and a second crop the first week in '^epteuiber of five and one-half

fine timothy, well

matured made hay, being live and

E. Farmer.

Save Your Ashes. Except in the immediate vicinity of

cities and the large villages, tanners '_reneraUy pay little regard to the ashes pro-

duced from the wood consumed in their

dwellings. In many instances ashes are

saved only for the purpose of soapmaking, and when

the necessary

amount

is secured—an insignificant portion

the quantify produced during the year

the balance is thrown out in some slouch

or mud-hole, without a thought of the

wastefullnoss of such a proceeding.

This is very poor farm management, and should reformed wherever it prevails.

Ashes are especially valuable for decayed

meadows, and when properly applied, wjII obviate the necessity of breaking up

and re-seeding, when, as sometimes hap

pens, such a process is not desirable, if

fertility can be restored without it.

Ashes are also the favorite food of corn

and the various root crops, and will sup

ply the wants of these when and where

Every iaruier uho-e fuel'for hi, dwel

ling is wood, should have a place to store their ashes for use on the farm, and not

cast them forth into the streets or else

where as though a nuisance to be got rid of in the readiest manner possible. This

to some, may be deemed a trivial matter!

but really it is not so, as those who pur

sue a different policy can testify by what.

may be termed a happy ex orienoe.

Thirty or forty bushels of ashes applied to an acre of land will equal in product

ive power an equivalent number of loads of the coarser barn-yard manures.—

Hence, we repeat, save your wood ashes, and enrich your land at the least possible cost for fertilizing agencies.

Lip Salve.—Two ounces of virgin Wax, two ounces of hogs lard, halfan

ounce of spermaceti, one ounce of oil of

sweet almonds, two drachms of balsam of Peru, two drachms of alkanet root cut small, six raisins cut small, and a -lump of fine sugar. Simmer these

ingredients together a little while, then strain it off into little jars.

Kkntcckv planters say the fpresent tobacco crop is the best ever known in .that State.

Poultry Items. (iooi) Hkns.—In a late number of the

Country (Jentleinan a poultry raiser said

to

rl

eggs a year was

the best average he had been able to get

frolii about, a dozen hens. This brouuliH

several champions to their feet. One!

gentlemen in ('bio lias thirty hens, which

in seven months from January 1st. had averaged seventy-one eggs. Another-l

correspondent had picked up 1,51!) eggn,f

from ten pullets of the white Leghorn

variety, from the 1st of last September to

the 1st of July this year, or 151 each in I ten months. Still another, from ten

Bralnnas, has had 7.VS eggs, or nearly

74 each, from March 1st to July 81st, be

sides raising sixty chickens. Kkkimnc. Fowi.s.—The Woonsocket

Patriot says:—Mr. Albert C. Vase, near

Manville, pursues what, seems to u.s a

reasonable and profitable course in keep

ing lowls. lie has enclosed an acre and

a quarter of laud with a high fence and

in this enclosure ho keeps about a hundred and fifty hens, He informs us that

during nine months of the year these fowls give a net profit of two dollars

per day, or say five hundred dollars per

year. Is not this keeping fowls to some

purpose? In Mr. A ose enclosure is a running stream aud fruit trees. The

trees afford shade, while their fruit-bear

ing is improved by fowls.

The Best Laykrs.—The Canadian Farmer says the Black Spani.-h fowls lay,

on an average, the largest eggs of auy

fowls known. The Cochins or Brahmas

will outnumber them, but the Spanish

will produce the greatest weight of egg meat.

Active Manure. One of the most active manures, readi

ly within the reach of most farmers, is a

mixture of leached ashes, plaster, and

uight soif mixed with fine soil. Let

them be thoroughly worked owron :i

smooth spot, and allowed to stand a week

before using, working it over ever}- other day, and you have a most valuable man

ure at a trifling cost of time. A handful

of this mixture iu a hill is excellent to

give corn a start. Potatoes and garden vegetables generally feel it very rjtiiuk.

I/en manure is an excellent ingredient in

such manures, but it should be well slack

ed with water before mixing with other substances.—

Miliar Firmr.

A Few Hints.

Is water convenient to your yards and

stables for wiuter ue? If not, in remem

brance of the miles of snowy travel you

and your stock have done, supply it* now —bring down the spring from the hill

side, dig a well, or force tip part of the

stream below with the hydraulic rain.

Hog pen manure is exceedingly eon-eeu'.-ated a great deal is wasted in the pens aud yards. To remedy thin, mid

increase the ijuantity, supply the 0«TS

with a quantity of straw, forest leaves, potato vines, or some similar bedding and

absorbuient. Fill the outside yards with these it don't pay to let fattj»••••».«• lie in the muil.

Sawdust for bedding and a box-stall,

ten or twelve feet square, are uie& things

for a single horse, or a mare aud colt, in the winter time.
