STATE ITEMS.
Mr. George Arnold was thrown out of his buggy, at Lawreneeburir, last Tuesday, and killed.
Richard Griffith, a fifteen yenr old buck of Franklin county, shot himself through the thigh, and a horse through the J^nee, while awkardly loading a revolver. Youths of that tender ngc have no business with revolver -, but we are sorry for the horse.
A showman of Lipuian's circus •laniuied' a boy who was peeping under the curtain at Hamilton. The people became cxcited. and hustled the circus out of town. The showman brings an action for damages.
It is generally conceded that Governor Morton is to be the successor of Hon. Henry S. Lane, as Uuitcd States Senator from Indiana. The Legislature recently elected, and which is strongly Republican. will choose the Senator at its next session.
Col. W. T. Te»nis and L. II. McCullough started to Washington City this morning, taking with them a moddel of an electro-magnetic machine, the latter has recently invented, which is said to be the --philosopher's stone'' in the wav of applying the power of electricity in propelling machinery.— Richmond Palladium.
POKK PACKING
AROVNDTIIE
sonvi/le Democrat.
FALLS.—
Packers in this city, Louisville and New: Albany are making extensive arrangements to enter upon the hog slaughtering business when the seasoi}, cojunaenees.— At the present writing there is a wide margin b§t\i eeix the views of packers and feeders, which will doubtless result in delaying the commencement of business to the 1st or 15th of December. Present advices lead to the conclusion that the number of hogs fattened will be lareeand as corn, almost exclusively, will be used in feeding, the quality will be very superior. The following firms will be engaged in the business in Louisville:— Messers. Hamilton Brothers, Huffman, Hughes & Co., Jarvis & Co., Owesley & Co., Duncan, Floyd & Co., 0. W. Thomas & Co., and Fred Loeh, and Messrs. J. T. Morton and Co.. in this city, and J. S. McDonald & Co., at .New Albany.-^-. These firms will doubtless slaughter 300,000hogs, and we may therefaio.antfcipate an uuusually active season.-Jtffer-
f&c Shojrjng of the Late Elections..
The vote upon Secretary of State in Indianji, at the late elections, stands as follows: Total, 325,417 Truesler (Rati) 170,018: Manson CDem.) 155,399 RadN majority. 14.l!10. The difference »s less than five per cent, lu lV»»sylvaura, the difference is three «ent and. in Ohio, about eight. ^hU supposing that it ip a fair ayw&ge exhibition of the present relative strength of two parties iu.the Nortb, wonJd give, in a Congress composed of ^orfbe.-n members, even with a just apportionment, substantial working majority a majority as large as it is wholesome, at any tiiae. for a party to possess and to say nothing for the interests of the country, is Utter for its own than a majority extravagantly larire with the disadvantage that vtas unjustly obtained.
There is one thing pretty strongly i^. dicated by these statistics 'that lea'.imr the South out of the question, tjlp cal party is by no means, sure of retaining a popular majority, As.' uming that none of the States which

being the case, that its source of
'.eugtli, is, first, in keeping out the

a
majority of thu Northern people. We are aware that the leaders of the Kadieal party are now balancing the question botween a coup d'etat—a seizure of
the whole power of the Government in the rnodo prescribed by General Butler and Wendell Phillips—and an attempt to get along without it: in other words be- .,,, tween the inauguration of a force above the Constitution and a reliance upon the old fraud under it. The recent public adhesion of several high officers of the army to the restoration policy of the
President, has placed such obstacles in the way of the former course as are discouraging, if not insurmountable- and the effects of these are perceptible in the tendency shown, by several Kadieal journals, to back down from their late extreme position. Besides this, the Jacobins of the United .Stntes, although greatly given to revolutionary oratory and enactments, have had no practice in scenes of forcible revolution. The reverent care which they took of their own persons during the war—preferring places ot profit to places of danger, and skirmishes of words to a more carual conflict —has not been without its disadvantage and Charles Sumner, Thad. Stevens, Henry WilBon, Benjamin F. Wade and Wendell Phillips would probably find themselves quite out of their element in organinsurrectionary squads and erecting barricades.
When we come to force, a party which is only three to eight per cent, in the majority, has not the advantage of numbers sufficiently upon its side to venture a ^general trial of physical strength: and this especially when it is considered that the Radical party, altough the most numerous, includes the bulk of those who are conservative of property, and who have property to conserve,
It is evident in the result of the elecr. tions, that the power of the present Congress to do much mischief—in fact, to do any thing which resembles a prosecution of its present policy—is the product of a fraud in the apportionment of representatives. The Kadieal party, reduced to a three or a five percent, majority, would be under a control which would reoder extreme measures impossible.
The impeachment of the President would bf out of the question, and the veto power, no longer a nullity, would have the effect.to prevent even the initiation of meararos as inimical to the material as they are to the political well-being of the country.
