When the lion. James Wilson cut loose from the radical party, rt left tltorti without a bell Wether in this county. After much tribulation they have at liiat got a leader in the person of Mr. John Darter. That John is the only man left .. ho lias sufficient brains to lead them, is apparent to any one who knows anythingof the radical party in this county. The New School clique made nn attempt to supplant liim with Ilutlcr, but failed. Since that time John has worn the mantle with commendable dignity. One of bis most admirable trails of character is, '.hat he never overrates himself, and consequently leaves the task of demolishing Voorhecs anil McDonald to Weeping I'eter and Hut'.er.

Radical Decency.

The leaders of the God and nioraht) party in our city are very nice people. Like Paul Knapper, they are all good ii]en, God-fearing cusses, loyal devils and heavy on the anion. On Friday night, the 15th, they covered the stand and seats orectcd for tlio National Union Mass Meeting of tbe Democracy, with filth, and on Saturday night they spiked tlio Democratic cannon. All right gentlemen. Such conduct will maVe you votes, but for heavens sake don't lay any claims to decency.

CRAWFORUSVIM iK| September 14, 1866.

Mlt. EDITOR:—In the last issue of the Crawfordsville Journal, tlio man that runs the ma* thine appears to be greatly escrcised over the fadt that Hon. ARCH.JOHNSTON and myself both addressed an assemblage of National Union men, on the same night and at the same place.

Now I would advise that gentleman to take it cool, and not get tojo much excited, from the fuct that between thin and tlio coining election he will sec many tliin'gs to excite him, many things to perplex him and many things that will not suit him.

He will in all probability learn that the cry of Copperhead has ceased to answer every argument against the'present system of taxiiig all the industrial pursuits of the country to keep up a .privileged class of bondholders, bankers, government swindlers, and stay at home patriots.

He will probably wake up to the fact that the time has come when the honest masses are. beginning to th\nk for themselves, and that the time has passed tWicn demagogues and political tricksters can carry the elections of this country by calling evcryboy that happens differ with them on the political issues of the day, hard names, by mcctiiig the arguments of the National Union men with the ery of Copperhead, humbug or anything else but facts, figures and arguments.

Let the man of the JoMrHaicome squarely out the tax question like a man. Tell the peowhether you think the toiling, sweating illions of our own race and color, should be ed, on all they cat, drink or wear, for the keeping up of a irionitd aristocracy, or wliethyou favor, as 1 do, that the Revenue of the country shall be raised by an advalorem tax on all the property of the rich and poor alike. re you in favor of taxing everything that the widow of the Union soldier has to buy for herself and olrplian children? You cannot dodge this issue—the people are getting their es open—you have got to face the music, be ever so unpleasant.

How arc you on the negro suffrage question? No dodging the question, the people demand i.i/ answer. Did G. S. OSTII do right when he voted to fasten it on the District of Columbia and on the Territories? Did the the Radical gentlemen of the Philadelphia Convention do right in cheering FKKH. DOUGLASS when he demanded suffrage for all men, hito, black, brown, spccklcd or yellow? Just .1..,.. juui nana. Tliat Convention tore off the mask—the people begin to see your real eslgn.

lI('.

You talk about my consistency—bosh every man in this community knows full well that I have always opposed negro suffrage, nd you and all of the Republican party, but .vc^ve months past, pretended to do the sums, then forsooth, because 1 meant what I said, and you were hypocritB, you vilify and abuse mo. All right gentlemen, go in on your muscle, time will tell where hypocricy ami deceit will land you. Yours, "more in sorrow ban in anger." lilhL BOWERS.

VilHlratlon-What Geo. W. Snyder, the now Editor of the Journal, thinks of our Farmers.

We clip the following dirty slander from the

Journal of last Thursday. It will be seen that SNYDER has a great aversion to our farming

community. Their rough hands, hardenod by toil in following the plow, and the hard manual labor required of them in their occupa. tion as agriculturalists, together with their plain attire, is made the subject of ridicule by this hired mercenary of the Radical Bondholder's party: "The whole town seemed astonished when the delegation came in from Itallhinch. It consisted of a .wagon full of unwashed, un combed Uallliinchers, carrying a Hag and at lug uruiDD."

At their Old Tricks.

That the Radical leaders in this State in tend dofeating the will of the people in the •oniing election, by importing voters from other States and stuffing ballot boxes, is evident. To cover up their designs they have set up the cry of stojj thief. The mercenary of the Journal will find himself badly mistaken if lie expects to throw the National Union men of this county off their guard by such silly

trickery.

THK mercenary of the Journal, in speaking of

the National Union Democratic Convention of last Saturday, says: "Then came the editor of the Rrvific, on
