A most outrageous rape was perpetrated in Sumpter county, Georgia, last week. Mrs.
Gresham, a highly respectable and intelligent lady, started to a neighbor's house half a mile

he returned and was arrested and taken to Anieiiciis for trial. The lady recognized him,

Toronto, May 31.—The Daily Telegraph of this evening has a dispatch from Montreal to-day saying oue thousand stand of arms were seized at St. Albans yesterday, concealed in a box marked machinery. When seized they were turued over to the Anierieuu authorities at Burlington. The sensation created here last
received notice to be ready to move troops,
stock. Colonel luix this morning received orders from Ottawa to notify all corps in this department to be ready to move at once for active service if required. The city during the morning has been rather excited. Canadians now admit that Sweeney is desperately in earnest and will attempt invasion. The tiovernment is loudly censured for withdiawing troops from the frontier and leaving the border towns at the mercy of the Fenians.

The Kcvnuitj Tclcgrajih has a reliable special from Hamilton, saying that at 11 o'clock this morning, the troops there were called out by bugle and ample preparations have been made by the G. They are very secretive and will divulge nothing except that the}* are going to California. It is believed that Sweeney litis sent unarmed men into the Province to use at night and seize the arms in the Government buildings over the frontier.
