of

citizens was held at tfid court house Saturday night, to coTisidfcr the propriety

of

petitioning, the Gity-Couucil to tarsfl' tfl6ney -by taxation to aBsist iti building, thn Vincennes, Danville, and Indiana and.IUinois Central railroads. j)r. Pierce was called to the chair, and W. W. Leathers appointed secretary, tfr. Pierce, in stating the object of the meeting, remarked that he was one of- the delegation appointed to visit Crawfordsville, and ascertain the temper of the people in regard to the Danville road. Ho had found the citizens of that town very enthusiastic and energetic, more fully determined to build tho road than before Mr. Lord abandoned the enterprise. They expected Indianapolis to give 850,000, but would be content with whatever they saw proper to do.

Mr. Nicholas McCarty, who was also" one of the "delegation to Crawfordsville, corroborated the statements of Mr. Pierco in regard to the zeal manifested by the citizens of that place, iu behalf of tho road.

Mr. W. H. Talbott asked the secretary to read a letter written from this place to the Wabash Express, denouncing the Indiana and Illinois Central road movement as a copperhead scheme to colonize Irith in certain localities to vote the Democratic ticket, and reflecting severely on the character of Mr. Taibott.

The letter having been read, Mr Talbott said that he did not care for anything contained in it personal tu himself. He had lived too long

ia

this community, and was too triM' known to be affected by the venomous productions if an anonymous scribbler,' who was too distardly to sign his name to las libellous communications. But he did care for the cffcct it might have on the prospects of the road. He had been' laboring for five years to have this road built, and it was an object dear to his heart te see the cars rnnuing over it. As for its being a copperhead scheme, seven of the officials were Republicans, while but five were Democrats. He had been elected president. against his will, and didn't want the office, but it was forced on him.

D. V. Cull}', Dr. Stevenson, William Wallace, and other citizens made speeches in favor of railroad enterprise.

Mr. Landed spoke in behalf of tha Viuccuncs "road. The people along the line had subscribed liberally, and only asked S50,000 of Indianapolis.

Ou motion, a committee of live, consisting of William Wallace, G\ Sherman Aquilla Jones, J. W. Murphy, and Nicholas McCarty, were appointed, to confer with Council, asking an appropriation of SI 50,000, to assist in building the three proposed roads, the matter to be left to a vote of the people, and the money to bo raised by taxation, if ratified.

Colonel Dewce.se made a short speccli, full of fire and eloquence, urging an appropriation of S250,000 instead of 8150,000. He compared the action of Indianapolis with that of the little city of Vincennes, which had voted 8200,000 to th« road at one time, and now has given $50,000 more. The colonel said that if Indianapolis did not wake up from her lethargic sleep, she would become a mere wood and water station for Cincinnati roads, and iti a short time the brakemcn would ad' nounce it as "Indianapolis station." The colonel's speech had the desired effect, and the proposal to insert 8250,000 in lieu of S15U,000 carried unanimously, afwhich the meeting adjourned —Indianapolis Herald. ,,,

Murder Must be Made Odious, When Sickles murdered Key, he was arrested and tried for murder. He had killed a man. Murder is a most odious crime, the worst iu the catalogue. The counsel for the State argued, Sickles must be hung murder must be made odious it will not do to let him escape. But the counsel for Sickles said, true murder 13 odious, and killing is odious, and an awful crime this is tho general rule but when a man is provoked to kill another by wrong and outrage of the killed upon the killer, murder is not odious, and will not be punished and so said the jury, so said the country.

Newland killed Evans. Gordon argues Newland must be hung to make murder odious but Ncwland's counsel answer, Evans, the slain first wronged the slayer, provoked him to the murder, and, in such case murder is not odious.

Treason is odious, and should be punished. But the treason of half a nation, against Charles First, was not very odious •.. treason against George the Third Was not very odious treason against Charles the Tenth was not very odioys. And Why? Bccausc they had outraged their peoples.

But mark these were cases where therei was no written constitution, and it was difficult to declare exactly what the tights of the people were, and when they had %£§•••.:.• bedn violated while, in our Government,. 0k we have a written Constitution, which en- |s|^| ables the people at once to scb and kDOWisSj the violations of their rights defined in that Constitution. Think of this,

publicans.—Indianapolis Herald —1
