5. Resolved, That we declare it to be a just principle that taxation and representation should go together—that property of every description whether houses, lands merchandise or Government bonds, should bear its fair share of taxation, and that ^here should be no ''favored classcs"' on the duplicate. The mau who has money 'to buy bonds, and live on the interest, is exempt, and contributes not a dollar to support State, county or city. As Democrats, we are compelled to say that these laws are unjust, oppressive, and should be changed. We believe that the men who voted for them should not be trusted and that the party which sustains them should not have charge of this Government-. We ask that nil men pay in proportion to their wealth, to their means and ability. 6. Resolved, That tue repudiation"'1o? the rebel debt by the Southern States, themselves, by solemn enactment, has relieved the people of the nation from all apprehensions that they will ever be called upon to pay any portion of the same? but if this is not deemed sufficient, the Democracy hereby declare that uo portion of that unjust debt shall ever be paid with our consent. 7. Resolved, That the soldiers who left the comforts of a home to sustain the flag of our country, are entitled to, and Bhould receive, the heartfelt thanks of a grateful people. And those who early rushed to the standard should, by the action of Congress, be equally remunerated by an equalization of bounties, or otherwise, with their brethren who, at a later day, were called upon to fulfill that highest duty of a citizen. 8. Resolved, That we will cheerfully and heartily sustain the man who in an official capacity, either State or national, shall be guided by the principles we this day avow and in so doing, we will not let party affiliations prejudice our action. 9. Resolved, That the vote of tVic House of Representatives conferring the right of suffrage on negroe?, against the almost unanimous vote of the people of the District of Columbia, shows a recklessness which none but fanatics would defend, i" and none but tyrants practice and we ••Ijgreby denounce that vote as a precursor of universal negro, suffrage, and to other outrages upon The rights aud liberties of the people of the various States. 10. Resolved, That we are opposed to the repeal of the Thirteenth Article of the Constitution of Indiana, prohibitino negroes and mulattoes from settling in this
State, and now, more than ever, deprecate the entrance of that class of persons within its borders and we do most emphat""illy condemn and disapprove the action of the Republican majority in the late General Assembly of Indiana in passing through the House a joint resolution proriding for the abrogation of that Article of the Constitution. 11. Resolved. That we are in favor of the Legislature, by friendly enactments, encouraging emigration to the State. 12. Resolved, That eight hours in 4^. twenty-four is as long as a laboring man .ie can work and have left to him sufficient time for rest and improvement and we therefore insist that it shall be declared by statute that eight hours shall constii^_tute a legal days work. 13. Resolved, That we are in favor of religious toleration, as the founders of our Democratic institutions achieved and ^•understood it. and which they secured to !'~*all our people by constitutional guaran£%tecs and we declare that this great prin^/.ciple, and the personal rights of every
S\i ?'tizen, ought to be maintained free from ^invasion, either by means of legislative interference, or the equally tyrannical proscription of political parties, founded on bigotry and intolerance. 14. Resolved, That all prohibitory liqnor laws, or laws affecting the private frights of citizens to use their own time in innocent pursuits, or to force men to abstain bylaw, under pains and penalties, are injurious to the cause of personal ^.temperance and morality, and should be ^V'disccuntenaced. We arc equally hostile to the

jfeated by Democratic Ajctes at the late ex1$. ',ra session of the General Assembly, and all kindred legislation. We shall oppose radical temperance and other schemes ./-naving for their object the annoyance of any class of our people. 15. Resolved, That the immense frauds ,1D "9anc^'d) cotton and other matters, ipracticed by the State and federal govern- "... ments, under abolition rule, is deserving the stern condemnation of this convention.
Resolved. That Senator Hendricks and Representatives Isiblack, Kerr, and oorhees, by their untiring devotion to const.tutional liberty, have shown them^'vc® -rue patriots and the expulsion of Mr. Voorhees from the House, we deBounce as a high-handed outrage of a .profligate, unscrupulous party.
Mr-Harrington, of Jefferson, offered the following: Resolved, That the money expended in support, of the Freedmen's Bureau ought ."J? Just'ce, to be applied to the relief of the widows and orphans of white soldiers who have fallen in battle.
The Convention then proceeded to ballot for candidates for the State ticket, and the following gentlemen were nominated:
SECRETARY OF STATE.

D. MANSON of Montgomery. ACDITOa OF STATE.

TREASURER OK STATE.
JAMES B. RYAN, of Marion.
ATTORNEY GENERAL.
JOHN R. COFFROTH of Huntington SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTUCTION R. M. CHAPMAN, of Knox,
There was but little contest for any of the nominations except that for Superintendent of Public Instruction. There was no choice on the first ballot, S28 votes being cast, and no candidates having received 415 necessary to a choice. Smith received 25S Given, 225 Haw. Ill
Chapman, 115 and Douglass, 102. Mr. Douglass having received the lowest number of votes, was dropped from the list, and the convention proceeded to a second ballot. After the ballot was taken, the votes of a sufficient- number of counties were changed to Mr. Chapman, aud he was nominated.- All the nominations were made unanimous—that of Ryan being by acclamation.
FROPOSED MASS CONVENTION.
3Ir. Applegate, of Carroll, moved that the Democracy of the State meet in mass convention on the 4th of July next but on suggestion that the matter had better be left entirely to the judgment of the State central committee, he withdrew his motion.
PRINTING THE PROCEEDINGS.
On motion of Hon. Joseph E. McDonald, it was resolved that fifty thousand copies of the convention proceedings be published by the central committee— twenty thousand in the German language for distribution throughout the State.
The Hon. Cyrus L. Dunham beinpcalled on, made a stirring and eloquent speech, which we regret we are compelled to omit, on account of the crowded stale of, our columns.
•C THE CANDIDATto The nominees of the convention were
then loudly called to come upon the platform. General Manson complied with the demand, and thanked the convention for the kiud expression of confidence in him, and assured them that if they would ratify the nomination by their votes next fall he would give them no cause to be ashamed of their choice. Mr. Ryan also came forward and returned thanks for the very flattering expression of confidence which had given him the nomination for
Trcisurer of State by acclamation. Mr. Ryan said that he was at a loss for words and that if he had not been a very impudent Irishman he would not have appeared at all. None of the other candidates were in the house, and consequently could not appear. 8

On motion of Major Ward, of Lafayette the thanks of the convention were tendered to all the railroad®, with the exception of the Lafayette and Indiauapolis, for their courtesy in carying delegates at half fare.
INDORSEMENT.
On motion of Mr. Ilanna, of Vigo, the following resolution was adopted Resolved, That the Indianapolis Daily Herald, as the central organ of our party in the State, and the Indiana VoUcsblatt. as the organ of the German Democrats, are entitled to the confidence of the party, and this convention earnestly insists, as one of the instrumentalities to secure success, that efforts be made to extend their circulation to all parts of the State, and that this convention recommend them to the generous and hearty support of the Democracy.
ADJOURNMENT.
As it was getting late, and the use of the theater was required to prepare for the evening's entertainment, the conven tion then adjourned.
The Tornado.
Mr. John Gilbert who rosidos in Scott township, about two miles north of the track oftho terrible tornado which passed over that region on Inst Tuesday night, gives tie following particulars of theterriblo destruction crcatcd by the storm king in it* ruthless march: Mr. Henry A. Foster, when the storm came up. was at work in bis sugar camp some distance from his house. Ho immediately nought shelter, and as soon as tho fury of the storm hnd passed ho started through the pitch darknoss, guided oniy by tho flashes of lightning, to make his way home, which, when reached, ho discovered to be only aheap of ruins, with no living sign of any of iho. members of his family. Seeking assistance from a. neighbor living in the vicinity, but whoso houso fortunately escaped tho tornado, ho roturned and a terrible scene presented itsolf to his view. Amid tho ruins and debris of his house Iny his wifeund two children crushed to death, while tho feeble cries of a littlo son, some fivo yeare old. indicated that but one solitary member of his household was left olivo. The child was tound to bo little injured,
Mr. Foster's barn was torn into fragments, and two of his horses killed. A mile distant from this scone of horror, tho house of Mr. Mathow F. James was blown down and a young lady, a daughter of Mr. J., instantly killed, Tho rosidenco of Dr. Strong was torn into a thousand frngmonts. but fortunat»ly none of the inmates wore injured except a little boy whose arm was broken.
THEeditorof tho Journal seems to think, judging from the last numbbr of his paper, that personal attacks upon tho oharactor of Mr. James F. Harney, and Wm. C. Vanoo will advanoe the intorosts or himsolf and perty this county. Tho dirty slander upon Mr. Vance, who at present is absent from ouroity.is in keeping with his foul and malicious slander upon a number of our most respectable citiien» last summer, whom he aocuaed of eavei-drop-ping and bearing false witne ss.

EDITOR REVIEW—As tho.time has again come when the sovereigns of Old ontgnniery should seek proper persons to fill the responsible county offices to bo supplied this fall, we lion you will consider a suggestion from Scott Township, and not you alono but the other conservative men of the county.
It has bocn fully demonstrated, by subsequent exents. that no county office is more liable to abuse, with consequent loss to the already overburdened taxpayers, than the office of county Treasurer consequently tho necessity of filling it with a man of moral worth, and sterling integrity.
I believe'the present incumbent has given entire iatisfaction to all. but is not for the approaching term constitutionally elligible, for which reason some
other person must besought and while we would
order the not disparage the claims of one, of the many men of the county, who would bo an ornament to the office, and in honor to the people who placed him in it, we desire to call special attention to Dr. English of
Clark township, than whom a more competaut person, perhaps, cannot be found. It is believed he combines all the elements of an efficient and popular ofliccr.
Though it is firmly believed that disunion rad cali.-min the North, must go down this fall, with its blind devotees and hypocritical advocates and de-
