DEFEAT.—Tho

Journal says:

In less than three days after tho defeat

two

hnndred thou

sand fresh volunteers were offered to the

United States Government. Another defeat would call out three hnndred thou

sand in two days. Defeats strengthen the United States Government more than victories ever strengthened any other.

ONE

or THE

MEANSUSED.—The

Evening Journal

Albany

asserts that a prominent

member of Congress prepared, some days ago, a resolution of censure upon Gen.

Scott, for his delay in marching upon Riohmond, and that he was only prevented from offering it by a few discrcet friends

And tho Pittsburgh

Dispatch

states that

it has good authority for asserting that

Gen. 8cotii was callcd upon by a self-con stituted committee, composed of members

of Congress, who told him ho must move tho army forward to Richmond, or reso

lutions of censure would be offered iu the House. This is one of the means used to cause him to abandon his own plans.

FIGHTING TOGETHER.—A

ter received in Buffalo, from a member of tho Fire Zouaves, whoso fcats-of-arms are

tho talk of tha whole country states that Henry Lazarus and Dennis Horrigan, the

famous pugilistic rivals, are now fighting, shoulder to shoulder, in tho ranks of that

volorous corps. Their contests at Point Abino, two years sincc, arc fresh in the

memories of "The Fancy."

THE SCENE

IN

CONGRESS.—The

110

sccnc

presented by the Senate and IIousc of Representatives is indescribable. The gloom hung like a pall over both houses, and

one seemed to have the heart to

transact the public business. No one seemed to feel this more intensly than MR. Crittenden of Kentucky. When he rose on Monday morning he asked, "Well what further news?" He had gono to bed under the delusion that the Federal army had triumphed. "We are routed—utterly routed," was the reply to his question. The old man started back in astonishment, and when the facts were brought before him he went back, sat down, and, putting his head down upon his hands, burst into tears. I saw hiin that night, and there is no longer room for doubt on which side Mr. Crittenden's feelings arc enlisted.— N. Y. Post.

Scroftila, or King's Evil, i& a constitutional disease, a corruption of tho blood, by which thii fluid becomes ritiatcd, weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it pervades the whole body, and may burst out in disease on anj* part of it. No organ is free from its attacks, nor is there one which it may not destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously caused by mercurial disease, low living, disordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth and lilthy lmbits, the depressing vices, and, above all, by the venereal infection. Whatever he its origin, it is hereditary in the constitution, descending from parents to cliildren unto the third and fourth generation indeed, it seems to bo the rod of Jlim who says, "1 "'ill visit the iniquities of the fathers upon their children."

Its cfTects commence by deposition from tho blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed tubercles in the glands, swellings and on the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul corruption, which genders in the blood, depresses the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitutions not only suffer from scrofulous complaints, but they have far less power to withstand the attacks of other diseases consequently vast numbers perish by disorders which, although not scrofulous iu their nature, nre still rendered fatal by this taint in the system. Most of the consumption which decimatcs the human family has its origin directly in this scrofulous contamination and many destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain, and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or arc aggravated by the same cause.

On quarter of all our people arc scrofulous their persons are invaded by this lurking infection, and their health is* undermined by it. To cleanse it from the system we must renovate the blood by an alterative medicine, and invigorate it by healthy food and exercise. Such a mcdicine wc supply in

Hence it should be employed for the cure of not onlv Scrofula, but also those other affections whi-.h ari-o friuu such as Kui'l'rivi: and
