An Eastern correspondent of the London Times relates the following: The tone of the Moslem mind may be judged of by the following statement of what occurred there after Fuad Pasha had arrested so many hundreds of persons implicated in the massacres. A Moslem butcher owed 2,000 piastres to a poor Christian, who had contrived to escape the slaughter, and who, on the re-establish-ment of order, applied for paymeut of 100 or 200 piasters, on account, to purchase clothing and a few necessaries for himself and family. The butcher pretended to be delighted at the escape of his creditor from death, promised prompt payment, and meanwhile sent him a supply of food most tempting to persons who had been so Jong restricted to bad bread and water.— After eating^the victuals the Christian died, and lm wife, together with several of his fricncfe was brought to death's loor. -Suspicion was entertained, and it was discovered that the food had been poisoned. Fuad Pasha caused the butcher to be publicly hanged, and one would imagine that nothing but detestation could have been felt for so treacherous, dastardly and foul a crime. Put not the Damascus Moslems deeided that the wretch who poisoned his creditor to escape payment of a debt was a religious martyr, and that his death must be avenged, not on those who righteously hanged him, but on Christians who had nothing to do with it. Accordingly, on the afternoon of the_execution-, & man, some oi whose family arc members of the Protestant church, was found murdered among the ruins of the Christian •juartcrs. His hands were tied behind his back, and his mouth and nostrils claincd with blood. He had gone out from the castle with another Christian look at the remains of their homes, and Iiis companion had neither returned to the castle nor been heard ot up to the date of the letter. It would, therefore, eppear thr.t the Moslems had determined—as, indeed, they had threatened—to murder two innocent Christians for every one of •heir people who might sutler the penalty of his crimes.

Nor 5A this all. On the same day two Christians were outside 13ab looms* when

A

Moslem fired on them, fortunately without hitting cither, lie was recognized,— The Christians reported th- attempted asjjasbituition to the officer in charge of the city gate and to the Sheik ot the cjuarter, l.mt vitiiont any satisfactory result. And these outrages were committed the very -day thr.t Fuad Pasha had caused "\vr.\neh" (trust and safety) is be proc aimed throughout the city- Alter those facts it i« not surprising that Christians should place no trust in the professions of the Turkish authorities to atlord them safety. J-]very consideration is overlooked in the desire to fly from Damascus.

l)l»UIt.\CUFl:L.

Wo are informed that the Baptist congregation of this city have just reinstated Thomas h. llrcckinridge in his former good standing in the. Church, by a vote ot seventeen tosixtccn The charges against "'him were for drunkeuncss, licentiousness, '-'conduct unbecoming a Christian minister, ote., ctc. We arc informed that the accused plead guilty to all the charges except that of drunkenness, but that charge was proved on him.

Since writing the foregoing, we learn that the session at which the foregoing proceedings and vote were had, was held on lust Monday evening, that they had a hot and quarrelsome time of it until midnight that five or six of the more honorable members left the session in disgust at the manner in which the fricuds of Breckinridge upheld and sustained him in his abominations that it was only after these persons had so left the vote re-instating (he reverend vagabond was taken, with the result above mentioned.

We marvel overmuch at the affirmative vote of one prominent gentleman, who is said to have known and admitted that his own daughter had been insulted by the reverend culprit We would fain believe there was some mistake about this, but arc compelled to fear that it is too true.—Lafayette Herald.

This mau Breckinridge took advantage of his position to abuse and villify the Democratic party from his pulpit. He belongs to the "moral party."

SHOCKING SUICIDE.—On Friday evening last, at the house of Charles Watkins, in Bluff Creek Township in this county, a voung woman by the name of Mary E. l)augherty, an orphan girl, and niece of Mr. Watkins, took strychnine, from the cffects of which she died within tweuty .minutes after taking. It seems, however, that she had taken a small portion some time after dinner on that day, but failing to have any effect, she took a much larger doso about five o'clock in the evening, from the cffects of which she died in the most horrid agony, having sonic five spasms in which sbc suffered the most excruciating tortures, screaming with all her powers of voice, as every nerve and muscle seemed wroncbing her body to pieces.—

At intervals between the spasms the unhappy victim seemed perfectly rational gave an account of what she bad done and vb}*. Instead of wishing to live she besought those who surrounded her to give her something to kill her quick. She gave her motive for the rash act, the circulation of scandalous reports, circulated by her female associates.—Albia (Iowa) Jefcrsonian.

W&~ A country paper, in an obituary notice, speaks of the deceased being "a most estimable young man, and a deTout Christian until the day of his death. What a pity he did not die the day. before
