do so at a venture. No cause ever yet made headway without material aid.— Christianity owes her present proud position as much lo the liberality of her followers as the irrcsiitable influence of her teachings. Cut off the salary of her preachers, and anthems, prayers and exhortations would cease their sound would never reach the Throne of the Most High. So with political parties. Principle is a glorious thing, but, like faith, it is a light diet for hungry stomachs. Our motive in making these remarks is simply to call the attention of the party to the fact, that the present campaign is of no ordinary character, that to su -cecd a bold and united action is necessary, in which time'and money must be expended with no stinted hand.

Pl'BE A I»l:I.TKB1TED AROI,ITIO.MH.TI, On last Thursday night the Hon. James

Wilson addressed a llcpublican meeting at the Court House. His speech in point of fine declamation and splendid oratorial display was faultless, but the sentiments he gave utterance to were unworthy the man. His eloquent appeals were all lost when he openly and boldly avowed himself in favor of disunion. It was like tearing the silver veil from the hideous features of Mokanna. It presented Black Republicanism in it3 most revolting character, that with the spirit of a demon would convert the fair heritage of our forefathers into a sea of blood and carnage. With open rcbrllion by the disunionists of the South and Northdennying the right of the people to self, government, it becomes the duty of every patriot to pause in fearful contemplation upon the terrible results that must inevit. ably follow if these Jacobins are allowed

VICE PRESIDENT.—It may be useful, just about this time, to reproduce the statement which the approach of a Presidential electiou makes opportune every four years:

The llousc of Represetatives has nothing whatever to do with the election of a Vice President nor the Senate with the election of a President. The powers of each body are distinct and entirely independent of the other.

If no President be chosen by the electors, the House of Representatives may choose the President, their choice being restricted to the persons having the highest numbers, not exceeding three, on the list of those voted for President.

THBNim.

The question who shall be our next President, is settled. The National Democratic convention has not disappointed the expectations of either friend or foe. It has nominated the man whom the American people have declared their choice. His election is a foregone conclusion If the deadly hatred of the Administration, ardently seconded by a host of zealous policians, was unavailing to defeat bim before the convention, where the appliances of federal power are infinitely more potent than with the masses, how can it defeat him in an appeal to the thirty millions of his countrymen Those oldist in council and best acquainted with the temper of the nation express the unfaltering convic tion that Stephen A. Douglas will be elected President of the United States by a larger electoral vote than has been cast for any man since the heroic times of onr history. May God give him strength and grace to make good the abiding trust in his patriotism and greatness of mind, in which his friends have clung to him at the darkest hour of his fortunes, to bring back harmony and good felling, and restore the republic to its pristine vigor.

The private dispatch in our telegraphic column shows tSaiihe Administration programme has been adhered to, and the brag game carried out tcrtho last. The idea of withdrawing from a convention on the ostensible ground that one or two contesting delegations are admitted rather than another, is too absurd to require serious consideration. It is unprecedented and preposterous. No parallel of such a course can be found in our political annals. To pretend that in this withdrawal there is any principle involved, or an}' other motive save undying hostility- of a personal nature, were to insult the common sense of the American people. If it wore admitted that every member of a convention is jus-

ly within the competency of that convcn-

tion, or because of the probability of the selection of a candidate lie did not favor, ,. ... the word convention would be a contradic- i-IcDoni}I.d

Rational Convention, while that Con-

vention was unquestionably an authoritative body. Nobody will dare deny that the Convention which met at Charleston on the 23d of Api il was the National Democratic Convention. Every State, every Congressional District was represented in it and while they were represented—before a single delegate had bolted—a platform was adopted, and that subsequently adopted by the scceders was distinctly and emphatically repudiated.

We say then, that the men and newspapers which stand upon that repudiated platform, and support its nominee, are out of the party. Their talk about Democracy is mere twaddle. No man is a Democrat who stands upon any other than the Democratic Platform, and support any other than the regular nominees of the party.— Providftr«r Post.

"COI.ORED BEPL'BMC'AS.'' We find the following in the New York Tribune of Friday. We copy it for the especial benefit of such people as do not call themselves Republicans, but hive an idea of voting for Lincoln:

THS A](TI*MVeUa MKT IKt HlS. RACH18ETTS. A correspondent of the Philadelphia Press thus walks into some eastern papers:

The Anti-Douglas feeling' in Massachusetts is simply a matter of cash and not of country. The newspapers which keep the caldron of sedition to National Democracy seething in tbat State, are all supported, one way or another, by Federal pap. For instance, the editor of the Boston Post is a naval officer and abuses Douglas to the tune of five thousand per annum. The editors of several obscure papers are men of letters—that is, postmasters. The editor of the Pittsfield Sun is postmaster of that town at the rate of two thousand. The editor of the Lawrence Sentinel takes charge of the post-office there for some thing over one thousand. The editor of the Essex County Democrat does likewise for his locality, being rated at one thousand eight hundred aj-ear. The New Bedford Times is edited by the naval officer of that whaling village the Greenfield Democrat has its conductor in an eighteen hundred Office in the custom-house, and the Lowell Advertiser has two-thousand for something or other. Thus the patriotic fervor of these men is easily accounted for. They were all ready to seccde.

It ought to be stated that the Pittsfield Sun, mentioned above, notwithstanding its editor is postmaster, has now hoisted the Douglas flag.

THE POLITICAL SKIES IN INDIANA.

For the Douglas and Union Democracy of Indiana, the political skies arc all right for the secessionists not Bright. The Evansville Enquirer thus talks
