MACHINES.

^LAFAYETTE IND.

^pilE Committor of the American Institute, N. T., appointed at the late exhibition at Palace Garden, to examine Sewing Machines, have made a lone, elaborate, mid ahlo report, of much interest to tho public. Although tho utility of this invention is established beyond all question, yet for the various purposes of itsnpplication, ignorance exists as to the particular patent best for a specific purpose. Committee's heretofore have not discriminated and classified sufficiently. This report is frco'froin these faults. The machines are arranged according to tho stitch made, and the purpose to which the machine is to bo applied, in four classes, 1st, 2d, 3d and 4th a classification indicating the general order of merit and importance.

Class 1st. includes the Shuttle or Lock Stitch Machine for family use, and for manufactures in tho •ante range of purpose and material. The Coiumitteo has assigned this class the highest rank on account of tho elasticity, purmancnoc. beauty and the general desirableness of iho stitching when done," and tho wide rango of its application. At the head of this class tlie.v place the Whoeler .t Wilson Machine. and award it the highest premium. This has been tho uniform award for this Majhine throughout the country for several years, and wo think no disinterested person will dispute its justice and propicty. —Tribuno.
