Gi:itltlT S.MI I 11 INSANK. The telegraph on last Thursday night brought intelligence that Gerrit Smith had become insane, and that his friends had taken him to the Insane Asylum at I'tica.— Ever since the Harper's Ferry insurrection Smith has been terribly excite 1 and in constant dread of being arrested. Ilis
known. A consciousness of guilt, with the enormity of the crime, terrified him until reason fled from her throne. In 1S56 he was elected by the Republican party to Congress, and from that time he has been conspiring and plotting against the government. Let the Black Republican party succeed in 1860, aud we shall witness a dismembered Republic, "a land drenchcd with fraternal blood."
