THE EUROPEAN CONTEST. Mr. Bigelow, of the "If? Y^Kveuing Po*f, writes from Paris that in Ins opinion the citizens of Montgomery coanty
it i.« now tolerably clcar that theireis to be a long content, even if-not a Ku rope .in one. The preparations on bothides j^arre bepn so elaborate, the popular feeling of the belligerent nalidiiR litis becnmW^erasperatcd, a substantial sncress is so vitality important to the sovereigns engaged in it, and both feel so eofident of their strength that neither will be apt to yield to one, or even three defeats on Italian soil, or so long as their own territories, respectively, remain royal and undiminished.' I?or is there much to be hoped from outside negotiations. The war which diplomacy could not prevent, diplomacy will hardly able to interrupt when the respective belligerents have become inflamed with martial fury. There is but one circumstance which seems favorable to^an early peace, and that is what may be regarded as the proximate eanse of the vrhr-—we refer to the desperate condition of Austria's finances. It. the impression in well infornicd |tiar}er.s that the war va- hastened to prevent the occurrence of the iinpcnd-
German confederacy so decided, that there will be less difficulty in procuring the requisite funds for the prosecution of this war than for almost any other imaginable purpose. On the other hand France was never so well prepared, financially, for anything as she is now. The Emperor has just dune what was never done before by any sovereign of l'rance—he has borrowed a hundred millions of dollars from his pwn subjects, without asking a single banker, native or foreign, for a penny. Nor is that all—when he asked for one hundred niil-
lions they offered him five hundred, and re disappointed because he did not take
it. This result of the recent loan is one of the most extraordinary incidents of this extraordianry adminstration. It seems as if everything that the Emperor touches or plans undergoes a magical change to his advantage. France was never spending so much as now on public improvements, and yet no one seems to feel the burden, and the government least of all. It is not. likely, therefore, that, anything short of the most decisive reverses will induce the Kmperor to leave Italy while there is an Austrian flag floating between the Alps and the Adriatic.

FROM TIIE SEAT OF WAR.
The Austrian efforts to re-take Palestro are described to-have been very sanguinary. At one time the Sardinian troops were out flanked on the right when the Zouaves came to the rescue and repulsed the Austrians. The Austrian version of the battle has not been received. The Austrians had retreated from Robbio, and a special, telegraphic dispatch to the London Daily, News, dated Turin, June 3d, says that the Austrians were in full retreat across the Ticino.
The French head quarters were at Vcrcclli. Garibaldi had been driven into the mountains by the Austrian troops under Gen. Urban, who retook Varcse but a telegraphic dispatch received via Turin states that Gen. Garabaldi gathered reinforcements, returned and surprising the Austrians, reentered Como in triumph. Gen. Niel, who had been sent to the assistance of Garabaldi, had occupied Novara.
