NEW YORK MERCURY
OF SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 1800, ii Now Ready at all News Depots and Bookstores.' No character in history offers abetter snbjcct for the romancer, than that of MABIOX, or, as be aas familiarly called,
'THE SWAMP FOX," from the immense ingenuity of his stratagems and devices for misleading nnd deceiving the enemy, his thorough knowledge cf tho woods, forests, fields, and swamps of his native region where lie and his gallant band were perfectly at home, while their enemies became lost and bewildered in the labyrinthine mazes of undergrowth and morass.
The story above announced is a true reflex of those scenes and times, and its talented author has most vividly portrayed, therein, tho many exeiting incidents and accidents of a tenacious and indefatigable struggle for Liberty, pursued under the most adverse circmstances. "Every chapter is replete with exciting and romantic interest, historically accurate, but with a sparkling web of poetry woven through it, which make it at once brilliant story and a veracious record. Tha strongly-written descriptions of events—the ambuBcade—the sudden sortie—the nlght-attnck-the wild charge and repulse—are all wonderful as examples of word-painting, and equally true to the actual facts.
In addition to these scenes of heroism and lofty daring, the SWAMP FOX is not without the gentle charm of a love-story, for the working and tho effects of tho tender passion are depicted in its pages, as truly and artistically as the sterner emotions, rendering the tale a perfect picture of life and character in tho Days or the Revolution, which cannot fail to appeal to tho admiration, and gratify the taste of ovcry reader who has a spark of true patriotism in his soul.
The peculiar bower and interest with whioli the (rifted author, (Jeorge Albany* Esq.* describes the thrilling period, is a guarentee of the excellence of this truly magnificent Historical Romance. The vivid delineation of character, the depth of thought, tho faccination of style, the picturesque beauty of description, and, in a word, the power of language he commands, all combine to rende him one of tho most briliant writers of the age, while his great appreciation of any svrnna'.liy with tho pioneers in the cause of universal liberty give him a grasp of Revolutionary subjects pos sesseil by very few others. This has onabled him, in the Swamp Fox, to exhibit the life and adventures of
MAE ION AND HIS MEN
as they really were, and to do fit homage to that deliberate valor, that unyielding patriotism, which, in a few noble spirits, defying danger, and above tho scenes of privation, could keep alive tho sacred fires of li• crty in the thick swamps and dense and gloomy forests—asking nothing, yielding nothing, and only leaving tho field the better to re-enter it for the combat!
We take to ourselves some credit, for having secured fur our eolnins the CIII:FS IAEUVUKS of this master's pen, but we intend to give
THE NEW YORK MERCLI1V
a still higher prestago than ever. We believe it is already the BEST AND LARGEST STORY PAPER in tho world, and we contemplate making it better and better, with every successive number, in spite of all expense and opposition.

Sinco the first announcement of our engagement of MR. As it is impossible for us to answer thcso in detail, we can only refer out friends and correspondents to tl

whore the first of those sparkling and popular sketches will bo found. As no other American has ever traveled so extensively as BAYARD TAYLOR, and no other traveler can see things with the eyes of America, wo need not further eulogiso tho" value of tho emanations of his mind and observation, to the reading public. It is sufficient to say that they will greatly inliance tho high character that the MERCURY has ever maintained, and that has here toforc rested upon many causes, somo of the moot important of which may be snnimed up as follows:
THE MERCURY employs more literary talent than anv other pane. THE "MERCURY pays more, and higher prices for that talent, than any other paper.
THE MERCURY is constantly announcing new, startling, and brilliant additions to its already unrivald iun of attractions.
THE MERCURY ieillustratcd by F. O. C. Darley, Esq greatest artist of this century, and his beautiful pictures are thus brought within the reach of the entire public.

GOOD NEWS.—A reduction in the price of Sewing Machines is announced. Their ntilityis well established, and, at the present prices, we see no reason why they should not be found, as they onght to be, in every household. Several varieties are manufactured, adapted to various purposes. So far as public opinion has been formed and nttered the preferenceis emphatically accorded to the Wheeler & Willson Machine for "family use and for manufactures in the same range of purpose and material. Dnring the presentseason tho trials have been nnmerons, and all the patents of any pretensions have been brought fairly into competition. In every case the Wheeler «B Wilon machine has won tho highest premium. We may instance the Slate Fairs of New York, New Jorsy, Pennsylvania, Kentucky,Illinois, Wiscon sin, Virginia, Michigan, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri and California, and at Fairs in Cincinnati, Chicago, St. Louis, Baltimore, Richmond, and San Francis.-o. At the Fair of the St. Louis Mechanical Association the Examining Committee was composed of twenty-five Ladies of the highest social standing, who, without a dissenting voice, awarded for the Weeeler die Wilson Machine the highest and only premium, a Silver Pitcher, valued at #75. If these facts do not establish a reputation, wo know not what can.' (Christian Advocate and Journal.

-~/v rOR THE lrttn* CUBE or Iatermitteat Fever, or Fever and Apne, Remittent Fever, Chill Fever, Dumb
Ague, Periodical Headache, or Dilious Headache, and Billons Fevers, indeed lor the whole class of diseases originating in biliary derangement, ennsed by the Malaria of miasmatic countries. No one remedy is louder called for' by the necessities of the American people than a sure and safe cure for Fever and Ague. Such •we are now enabled to offer, ivith a perfect certainty that it will eradicate the direase, and with assurance, founded on proof, that no harm can arise from its use in any quantity.
That which protects from or prevents this disorder must be of immense, service in the communities where it prevails. Prevention is better thnn cure, for the patient escapes the risk which he must run in violent attacks of this baleful distemper. This "CUKE" expels the miasmatic poison of FKVEH
Fever and Ague is not alone the consequence of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of disorders arise from its irritation, among which are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Asthma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis, and Derangement of the Stomach, all of which, when originating in this cause, put on the intermittent type, or become periodical. This CUBE expels the poison from the blood, nnd consequently cures them all alike. It is an invaluable protection to immigrants and persons travelling or temporarily residing in the malarious districts. If taken occasionally or dnily while exposed to tho infection, that will be excreted from the system, and cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for protection than cure, and few will ever suffer from Intermittcnts, if they avail themselves of the protection this remedy affords.
Ayer's Cathartic Pills, FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSiC,
arc so composed that disease within the range of their action can rarely withstand or evade tlicm. Their penetrating properties search, and cleanse, and invigorate every portion of the human organism, correcting its diseased action, and restoring its healthy vitalities. As a consequence of thcso properties, the invalid who is bowed down with pain or physical debility is astonished to find his health or energy restored by a remedy at once so simple and inviting.
Not only do they cure the overy-day complaints of every body, but also many formidable and dangerous diseases. The agent below named is pleased to furnish gratis my American Almanac, containing certificates of their cures and directions for their use in the following complaints:
tic.ix, Ilrrnl!ii:i n, Headache arisitif/ from ilixordnrril Sittiniir /i, .\miscfi. Coughs, Colds, Influenza, IIonrscncKs, Croup, Bronchitis, Incipient Consumption, and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the disease^ So wide is the field of its usefulness and so numerous arc the eases of its cures, that almost ever)- section of country abounds in persons publicly known, who have been restored from alarming and even desperate diseases of the lungs by its use. AVhcn once tried, its superiority over every other medicine of its kind is too apparent to escape observation, and where its viilues arc known, the public no longer hesitate what antidote to employ for the distressing and dangerous affections of the pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate. While many inferior remedies thrust upon the community have failed and been discarded, thi.i has gained friends by every trial, conferred benefits on the afllicted they can never forget, and produced cures too numerous and too remarkable to be forgotten.
