I coold make DO effort for mvieK I saw him hold by the pofe with his left hand 1 saw h»m take the knife in hia right I felt the cold steel paw between his wnsts and mine, and then
And then the horror of the moment gave me back my strength, and I clang to the fane-work just as the thong gave way.
We were separated now, and I was still tec ore to the trapeze by one ankle. He bad only his arms to trust to—and the knife.
Oh, the deadly, deadly strife that followed! it siekens me to think of it. His only hope now lay in the cursed weapon and ao, clinging to the wood-work with one hand, he strove to stab me with the other,
It was life and death now, and I grew rt desperate. To feel his murderous clutch upon my throat, and, in the silence of that( it hideous struggle, to hear the report of a ch'ampagn'e cork—followed by a peal of a earless laughter—overhead.
v,
0h it was worse than death, a hundred times over! I cannot tell how long we clung thus, V{ each with a hand upon the other's throat.
It may have been only a few scconds but it seemed like hou»-s to me. The question was Biinply which should be strangled first.
Presently his gripe relaxed, his lips became dead white, and a shudder ran thro' every fiber of his body. He had turned giddy!
Then a cry burst from him—a cry like nothing human. He made afalse clutch at the trapeze, and reeled over. I caught him, just in time, by the belt round his '.waist.
"It's all over with me," he groaned between his set teeth. "It's all over with me! Take your revenge!" Then his head fell heavily back, and he hung a dead weight on my arm.
I did take my revenge but it was hard work, and I'was already half exhausted.— How I cqntrivcd to hold him up to unbind my foot, and crawl, so laden, up the roops, is more than I can tell but my presence of mind nevelr failed me for an instant and I suppose the excitement gave me a sort of false strength while it lasted. At all events I did it, though I now only remember climbing ore the basket-work, and seeing the faces of the gentlemen all turned upon -mo as I sank to the bottom of the car, Hcarcely more alive than the burthen in my arms.
He is a penitent man now, an Australian settler, and, as 1 am told, well to do in those parts.
This is iny .«tory, and I have no more to I tell." I

see from various statements given through the colnmns of pnblic prints, in reference to success of many who have gone west for the purpose of seeking the precious ore, that the expedition has proved nesrly'on entire failure and that they are now satisfied tliat "it iR pgt alljjold that glitters." Many doubtless who are now rusticating in the western. wilds, would bo g'al were they but at hojne, amor .acquaintances and friends, in this onr promised land, where pca'ce and plenty abounds. To those in our community, who have been anticipating ti tour to this unsafe country of the west, we wi^h-'to ppeak. If yon are not of that turn of mifod, faisuscepible of persuasion, or impregnable to truth mid common sense, wo can convince yon in' a few moments that any cnorgetic, thorongh-poingmsin among us can SAVE MOKE money if not DIKKCTLV MAKE, by staving at home, and btiving his GooJs of

at low figures—enough for each, nourh for all— and thisennnot be said in truth in reference to th9gold bearing country in question. o,no, it is a work of deception,"agitated for the purpose of entrapping and llcccing the masses, for the enrichment of a few. Headache, and Bilious Fevers, indn for the whole:, class of diseases oris inating in biliary derangement, cnus"d by the Malaria of minsnintic conntrics.
No one remedy is louder tailed for by the necessities of the American people than a' sure and safe cure for Fever and Ague. Such •we arc now enabled to offer,' with a perfect certainty that it will eradicate the d:sea?». and with assurance,' founded on pioof, that no harm can arise from its use in any quantity.
That which protects from or prevent-! tl-'n disorder must be of immense service in the -communities whore it prevails, ivvcuj/iw is better than cure, for the patient esenpis th? risk which he must run in violent attacks of •. this baleful distemper. This "CcitK" expels the miasmatic poison of I'i:vi::t ,\.v Acn: from the.system and prevents the development of tliq disease,-if taken on the lirst approach of its premonitory symptoms. It not only the best remedy ever yet discoverfor this class of complaints, but also the cheapest. prevails, every body thould have it
and use it l'rcely both for euro and protection. It is hoped this price will place it within the reach of all—the poor as well as the rich. A great superiority of this remedy over any other ever discovered for the speedy and certain cure of Intcnnittents is, that it contains no Quinine or mineral, consequently it produces no quinism or other injurious effects whatever upon the constitution. Those cured by it are left as healthy as if they had never had the disease.
Fever and, Ague is not alone the consequence of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of disorders arise from its irritation, among which arc Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Asthma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Howe's, Colic, Paralysis, and Derangement of the Stomach, all of which, when originating in this cause,' put on the intermittent type, or become periodical. This CUKE" expels the poison from the blood, and consequently cures them all alike. It is an invaluable protection to immigrants and persons travelling or temporarily residing in the malarious districts, if taken occasionally or daily while exposed to (!,e infection, that will be excreted from tl.e system, and cannot accumulate in suflicicnt quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for protection than cure, and few will ever sillier from Intcnnittents, if thev avail themselves of the protection this renlcdv affords.
